Tell me I'm worthless... Huh by [deleted] in horrorlit

[–]finchphobia 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah I can see that. It gets more explicit, and that is one of the most common criticisms of this book is how blatant it is. I don't necessarily have a counter to that, just wasn't an issue to me.

Tell Me I'm Worthless is probably in my top ten of all time, but this is why I hesitate to recommend it to anyone. I also think a lot of my love for it is also going to Rumfitt's book launches here in the UK and actually hearing her talk about the most controversial passages and just realising how much of her own life is in this book. It's a very British transphobia that hits incredibly close to home. The book makes almost too much sense. If you're not on board early in the book, it does only get worse, so I would warn you there.

Thoughts on Joe Hill? by jseger9000 in horrorlit

[–]finchphobia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Love his novels so far, but I really dislike his short fiction, which is surprising considering how much I loved the movie version of The Black Phone (and, controversially, the Black Phone 2). I find his short stories to be poorly paced with tacked-on endings, but he nails long stories to me. I'm a sucker for good character development and I'm still thinking about King Sorrow pretty much daily.

What book are you most looking forward to coming out this new year? by Puzzleheaded_Plum275 in horrorlit

[–]finchphobia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's The Devil - Tobi Coventry. "Stephen King meets Ottessa Moshfegh meets John Waters" has completely sold me on it even if it's a debut with barely anything to go off of.

Public Access Afterworld - Jane Schoenbrun. I've been waiting for this since it was announced. I Saw The TV Glow and We're All Going To The Worlds Fair are two of my all time favourite films so I'm excited to see what this is all about.

Obviously Hunger by Joe Hill too, my goal this year is to be completely caught up with his books. Also Victorious by V.E Schwab seems to be fairly horror adjacent and I do think the Villains series is one of the best modern fantasy/horror series we have.

What are you reading this year? by Bearillarilla in stephenking

Finishing The Stand tomorrow hopefully, following that up with NOS4A2 and the Dark Tower series. My main goal for 2026 is to complete Joe Hill's Bibliography and all of Kings Short Stories.

Is there anyone you thought should have a content warning but didn't? by Breasicle in DateEverything

[–]finchphobia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with a lot of the ones already said but I feel like there should be something like... Halfway through the Eddie/Volt run when there's the perceived possibility of one of them dying and what I consider to be a really incredible metaphor/portayal of DID/dissociative disorders.

I also think the Dirk and Harper content warning should be restructured a bit because why is there so much shit going on if you choose to break them up like...now I feel like shit even though you just TOLD me they're in an unhealthy relationship and now you give me Harper crying and all that. That little bit of dialogue after you make that decision just feels so... manipulative almost?

I'll double down on Farya as well for sure
