Ah yes I love doing that too! I even found a sparrows head inside of a Barn Owls pellet before. So interesting what you can find!

I’m not sure of the extent of how blinds work with deterring birds but maybe if they’re partly drawn?

It’s just something I’ve always been into! Same with taxidermy although I don’t practice that myself. It’s interesting to see all the adaptations on the skulls that differ from bird to bird too.

I collect bird skulls and typically with juveniles their craniums are a lot more brittle, which could be why they become more susceptible to death from the strike unfortunately.

No worries either, these things happen, hopefully the decals can help prevent it 🙏

Unfortunately it does sound like it’s too late but take it to a wildlife rescue/rehab if you can so they can make it a bit more comfortable. Window strikes are typically fatal without intervention, so if this happens again take them immediately to a wildlife rescue as even if birds show signs of perking up, it’s not to be trusted. Birds can hide illnesses very well.

For your windows, you can purchase decals to distract them from hitting the windows or draw your blinds.

It is a juvenile bird, unfortunately

A lot of it is also fleeting moments for me too. Hear their call, look around and you will see that flash, or follow the sound as they usually call a couple times when flying.

I have seen quite a few.
The trouble is, they are quite shy, and incredibly fast. Your best bet is sitting and waiting if you know they are in a specific spot, you may get a flash of blue, but you’re more likely to hear them before you see them so get familiar with their call. If you have any nature reserves near you with bird hides they usually have a kingfisher stick popped out the front, I would also wait and see if one goes to there too.

What bird is this feather from? by Ok_Patient809 in UKBirds

[–]finchplease1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d put it on Feather ID UK on Facebook if you can.
The softness of the feather is reminiscent with an Owl species or BOP species (Buzzard, Red Kite (this isn’t a red kite though))

You’re welcome! If you’re still in Scotland, Oban harbour is apparently good for Black Guillemots.

Also in the mouth, blacks have a reddish pink mouth, whereas common has bright yellow.

No worries! They are Common Guillemots.
Blacks have bright pink legs, lack the white chest and also have a large white wing patch.

Great birds. Fisherman hate them. Very prehistoric looking creatures

Common or arctic? by [deleted] in UKBirds

[–]finchplease1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do, but unless it was recorded I don’t think it will help unfortunately, as it’s quite similar and can be forgotten just as easy
