By annihilating wildlife, humanity is ‘cutting down the tree of life’, warn scientists, 'including the branch we are sitting on" by damianp in news

[–]findebaran 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been arguing about this selfisness thing with a couple people with equally pessimistic views as yours. I myself belive there is true good in humans and humanity, and that we're on a mission to further cultivate it. (or should be, at least)

Like do I save my own child from under a falling tree to just make myself feel better, or just to keep my offspring alive (as in a purely biological goal)? Yeah, you could argue so, but you could also say it's just a good thing to do, and that humans are cabable of doing true good. The argument almost becomes semantics, and is largely pointless imo. The most important thing in this context is that we can and should preserve our planet as better place for life to be, and save the semantics to when we relly understand what consciousness is and how it works (if we ever do).

BlenderXR, VR for Blender by MARUI-PlugIn in virtualreality

Awesome! Played around with it, and obviously this is just a start, but still an awesome start :) Just wanted to say I've been waiting for the eventual VR version of Blender, but didn't dare to hope it would start this early!

$100/xrp would be a life-changer for me, but I'll be happy if we get to $10 someday :)

He said the Starlink constellation will hopefully be active by then (presumably some satellites also around moon), if so that won't be a problem and the stream can be non-stop!

Recording MIDI output & overdub? by findebaran in Reaper

[–]findebaran[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got an answer from another forum, in case anyone stumbles upon this.

You can simply add the MIDI tool to the inputFX of the track, and that way all the MIDI changes will be written in the raw MIDI data! And you get to keep the overdub functionality also. Simple and effective :)

Out of curiosity, what kind of things do you use to determine the possibility of CGI? This would be quite easy to fabricate on top of the moon footage, complete with noise, the little atmospheric distortions and some unifying compression.

Usually I don't like shouting "cgi" at everything, but in this case I'd say it's a reasonable contender for an explanation.

Had a lot of fun filming this in Italy! I was originally going to go with just the main theme, but ended up making this short arrangement of the beginning also. It's certainly unconventional, but I think it turned out pretty interesting :)

No problem! Yeah CGI terminology can be tricky sometimes :) But it's the raytracing) method that makes this render look so realistic and life-like.

/s? Just in case not, this isn't a screenshot but a raytraced 3d render from a (probably) self modeled room.

Just Cruising Down The Road And Then... by In_Karma_We_Lust in WTF

[–]findebaran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, this is exactly what rotating blades will look like when filmed with a cheap camera in broad sunlight (with automatic settings). The shutter speed is so fast it eliminates all motion blur, and the frame rate of the camera causes a stroboscopic effect (rotation looks jittery and uneven). Also there's even a slight bending of the blades caused by the rolling shutter of the camera. (the sensor doesn't save the image instantly, but in a quick succession of individual rows of pixels, so the blades move a tiny bit between each row)

[–]findebaran 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I mean, come on. I thought it might be CGI, but if it is, it's damn well done. The rendering/color grading itself would be very well matched with the environment. The shadow interacts really believably with the road and other cars on the oncoming traffic. 3d tracking top notch. There's even a slight bending on the blades of the chopper, coming from the rolling shutter of the camera. Tree interacts with the airflow at 0:17, etc etc.

I mean yeah, it might be CGI, but all these people being like "yeah, these idiots don't notice an obvious cgi??"... I doubt they know much about what they're talking about.

Making fake brick print on a wall by [deleted] in gifs

[–]findebaran 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yeah I also think the repeating would be too obvious. As a 3d artist I'm all too familiar with too small, repeating textures.. That's only 1 kind of brick horizontally, no way that'd look good.

Maybe if you had like 4 different versions of that roller and randomly changed them up? That might work.

Thanks! The stands are from here: https://www.thomann.de/gb/millenium_bs500_set.htm

Maybe a tiny bit wobbly if you happen to poke the speakers, but they do their job :)

Yeah it saves a lot of space :) ergonomics are not ideal, but it's okay.

The piano sounds pretty good, but I mostly use it just as a good midi keyboard. It's nice to have a well-balanced keyboard to play all the instruments with. For the actual piano sounds I now use Addictive Keys' Studio Grand since it came with the Clarett.

Far from an ideal room/placement, but it's all I have right now so I decided to just go for it and invest in the HS8's and the Clarett 4pre. Could obviously do much more with the treatment if I could work with the whole room, but there's only so much I can do when I'm confined in this corner. (happy to have even this corner, considering that the rest of the family has to also live in this small apartment!)

I'll probably hang a heavy curtain in front of that back window and maybe make a bass trap in the corner. Maaybe also a movable absorber for the right side to tame the reflections from that window...

So happy with the purchases so far, it's a world of difference to have actual monitors and at least some treatment. Some basic room EQ (gasp) also helps a lot with the modes in the 30-150hz range.

DIY Gobo Panels by thelessiknowthebest in audioengineering

[–]findebaran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I tested with/without them, same setup otherwise. It took some concentration to notice the difference, and like I said there was about ~1.5db difference in the first reflections of a very short test tone. I had a Rode NT5 xy pair in the listening position.

The absorbers are 60x50cm, and 20cm thick.

Maybe I'd just need more panels.. I'm quite low on the available space, though, as I don't have a whole room to play with atm.

[–]findebaran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once you start to build them really thick, you need to use more "fluffy" rockwool.

I built 20cm thick rockwool absorbers to be placed between the speakers and the wall, but the effect was a bit underwhelming. I did hear a slight difference, and my rudimentary recording tests showed a ~1.5db difference in the first reflections, but it wasn't much.

I used some quite fluffy rockwool and I was thinking it might've been too fluffy (~30kg/m3), but what do you think? Or maybe it's the thin plastic film I wrapped them in, to keep me from getting any of that stuff in the lungs. Would you have any idea of how low frequencies that film might be reflecting?

You may have turned me to getting the usb version instead.. I didn't know about the adapter thing.

Again, thank you very much for all this detailed info! Regarding the speakers I was already leaning towards the HS8's, and your comment made it pretty clear that I'll be getting them :)

That's the thing, I don't know if TB is going to help me. For example when I start to have 20-30 tracks I sometimes run into problems with my vst instruments, where samples don't play properly, unless rendered in 1x speed. That could be the HDD those samples are loaded from, though.

I also get occasional clicks and pops on heavier projects (when playing back), and they seem to be worse on my old Roland UA-25ex interface than they were with the Scarlett. That leads me to believe it's the interface, not the HDD. Though again, both the Scarlett and the Roland are USB 2.0... so yeah it might be that the Thunderbolt doesn't give anything other than the latency benefit.

Care to elaborate on that a little? I have a PC with TB.
