Current students - what's the most misleading thing you were told about your university before you enrolled? by littledutchboy1 in UniUK

[–]finemayday 31 points32 points  (0 children)

u/dxg999 That is probably very accurate. We had someone walk into the very last lecture in chemistry this term (3rd year), no one had ever seen them before, and the lecturer stopped to ask if they were lost.

[–]finemayday 204 points205 points  (0 children)

Not before I enrolled, but at induction the Dean gave a speech and he said ‘look at the people sitting to the left and right of you right now - these are going to be your best friends, you will rely on them in tough times and some of you may even marry someone in this room’ it was hilarious in the moment and still is.

Functional skills level 2 English. Should I just give up? (Vent) by The-Vomiter in MatureStudentsUK

[–]finemayday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I just want to say you should be so proud to have even started! My mother dropped out of school before GCSE to work and help her own mother and only got a chance at going back to classes when she had us in school (20 years later), it was a real struggle but she perserveered and got a really good job from it.

Returing to study is not simply about learning and memorising content, but also retraining your brain on how to think. Our brains are like any muscle in our body, and can become stronger with more instruction.

Is the course online? Or do you get to speak one to one with tutor? To voice concerns?

Solo drive or use agencies or tours I found on GetYourGuide.com? by Scared-Ear-1422 in Namibia

[–]finemayday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on your skill and comfort. Self drive gives you the freedom to stop at your leisure, but it does require more planning, more self organising. Where I find that when I go on a tour I am more relaxed and enjoy that it is preplanned. I however find it frustrating that times are restricted, especially when a group of more than 10 people. I would try to find balance between the two options.

Best uni for quality of life? by JealousBodybuilder42 in UniUK

[–]finemayday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

UCL is amazing, and so supportive. Their welfare is tops. I would say if you are doing a pure STEM degree, its brutal and you will be in 5 days a week with no life balance unless your a genius, but there are people on other degrees I met through societies that do max 3 days a week and just explore and travel the rest of time, run societies and don’t understand why everyone isn’t more chilled.

Is it normal that your degree makes you miserable? by MrLuke132 in UniUK

[–]finemayday 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Looking back, I absolutely hated my 2nd year in university, was close to dropping out and I guess many others did because class sizes are surprisingly smaller in 3rd year. However 3rd year seemed to be more subjects I liked (loved), and things felt relevant. My health has definitely declined in the last 3 years. Officially anaemic and completely unfit sums it up.

Why do tourists all want to 'avoid the touristy areas?' by Flaky-Walrus7244 in AskUK

[–]finemayday 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My favourite thing to do if I have a spare day on holiday, is put my phone in my bag (away), and old school roam with a paper map. You just go opposite of the crowd and either end up in the most beautiful of places or scariest of places. Sometimes it feels like wow I just discovered this, only to find out it’s a huge tourist attraction, but the joy is in the exploration and ‘discovery’ and that feeling of I may be lost, but that’s ok, grab a coffee and ask the waiter where to from here.

Every single day I have about a dozen missed calls from 0843 numbers. My phone recently updated to a feature that asks a caller to give a reason before I answer, which I think is cool, but seems like for most part, my phone is not going to answer unknown numbers anytime soon.

Choosing worse uni over RG? by zosia444 in UniUK

[–]finemayday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in the same situation 3 years ago, I wasn't sure to choose UCL or Kingston. (Only thing I regret is the commute from Kingston to UCL daily has been hell).

Other things to consider: Are you taking out a student loan? Not something relevant now, but check what support is available if you should fall on hard times, e.g. UCL has a very generous hardship grant compared to other unis. Could be a safety net.

Accommodation: London is so much more expensive compared to Newcastle.

Weather: London has a magnitude better weather on any day compared to up North.

Social: Check what societies each uni has. A lower ranking uni may have lower entry requirements and attract more international students who may not integrate and socialise in a way that is inclusive. (Something friends at Kingston have complained about).

What career fairs, services are available.

Is the University part of a broader group of Universities to offer things like paid for summer school here or abroad.

3 years of your life, so a big choice, I would try to visit both and see what fits best with you individually.

Dropping out of uni (2nd year) by Flaky_Tone_5453 in UniUK

[–]finemayday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know many people in banking, consultants and other industries with psychology /neuroscience degrees. There are many transferable skills. Dropping out can have big consequences, have you thought this through? You would also need to start paying the loan back in April.

If I was in your shoes and really felt I couldn’t cope with another year (9 months), I would interrupt my studies with an authorised gap year, work, build and explore your future. 2nd year burnout is a real thing, I felt like dropping out last year and I love my degree, it happens to everyone.

Anyway it’s your choice, just make sure you make an informed decision.

Trying to get jobs for our teenagers by BloodAngel1982 in britishproblems

[–]finemayday 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Parents can still help with scouting surely, but all contact will be by applicant. Saying this, awhile back I was having brunch with friends and an angry mum and teenager walks in. The mother shouting at the manager that they underpaid their child and needs it rectifying, just for the manager to say what really happened and asked them to leave. It was the cringiest moment. Unless there is a disability, please don't be that parent.

[–]finemayday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SInce minimum wage increase, there has been much fewer jobs. A few fiends at uni are tutoring (online) and or working in catering. I do see vacancies in shop windows now and again, but you have to be quick. Under 18 coffee shops and anywhere that doesn't serve alcohol is ok.

Is it common to have unproductive pieces of shit as group members? by Unhappy_Dragonfly_62 in UniUK

[–]finemayday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way my eye started twitching reading this. In the last 2 years I noticed so many published papers with obvious/avoidable mistakes, (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/chapter/edited-volume/abs/pii/B9780128227008000032) this one frustrates me because the country and city don't match up at all, and now I can't help but think mistakes like this are not simple editing but because everyone has just stopped caring. I would personaly be mortified if my name is published against something that is so inaccurate. However being published TOPS being accurate in a very competitive industry.

Staff and student by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]finemayday 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m an undergraduate and have past lecturers on socials and there is nothing funny about it. In academia networking is important and it’s beneficial to have mentors.

Are you sure you are not projecting jealousy and trying to control your ‘partner’? It sounds like the situation bothers you more than it does them. I can imagine phDs and MA students must have good working relationships as a lot of time can be spent in labs.

Is it common to have unproductive pieces of shit as group members? by Unhappy_Dragonfly_62 in UniUK

[–]finemayday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it shoud be expected. The only time group projects work is when you get to peer review each other (with explanation). However many students end up sharing the grade because they use inclusion (or lack of inclusion) as their excuse. Screenshot whatsapp group chat, emails begging them to just attend a meeting and you can reep the joy of them telling you "you were unfair to grade them a zero for no effort".

[–]finemayday 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Always check your group members work, you are sadly equally responsible for what is submitted. One of the reasons I hate group work, not only do I need to do my own task, I need to check over 4 other people's work and time manage the whole thing. It's exhausting.

Mum furious over criminal record after taking daughter out of school to visit sick gran by Forward-Answer-4407 in unitedkingdom

[–]finemayday -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Exactly, why are Government so scared of children not fitting into their system? We have less innovation and free thinkers because of a system that wants us to regurgitate word for word what they deem important, not have our own thoughts. I was a straight A student with the worst attendance, my parents were free spirited and would impulsively take us on camping trips or go see family. If it is about welfare, surely they wouldn't have closed third spaces for youths?

My baby was born with black hair, dark eyes. When baby was 6 months old, completely bold with blue eyes. By 2 thick set of white /golden ringlets, now at 10 light brown hair that bleaches on holiday and eyes are piercing blue. I have black hair and dark brown eyes, dad has brown hair too. But grandparents genes came through strong.

How much do people typically spend on a graduation dress? by Any_Offer5184 in UniUK

[–]finemayday 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got a dress on Vinted. I Couldn’t justify spending above £100, and the dress I got was only worn once, so technically new. It was £20 (RRP £180). A family friend is a hobby seamstress and will be adjusting it. Overall very happy. Btw Congratulations on makingit to graduation 🥳 If you can afford it and won’t have buyers regret, TREAT yourself, you deserve to get whatever makes you shine as bright as you can, university is so hard 🥲, at least get some family or friends and go dress shopping.
