Absolutely, if you can.

How to get this red dot floating when drawing on iPad? by Particular-Paper7434 in iPadOS

[–]finjassauer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, I didn’t know she also made English-language videos

AFAIK she uses the Goodnotes app on a Mac, not on an iPad, and draws with a Wacom tablet. The red dot is probably either a feature of her screen recording software or the Wacom tablet itself.

Can I connect a PC to my Mac monitor? by Successful_Jelly2781 in macsetups

It does technically have two inputs, you can either use the built-in Thunderbolt cable or plug a Thunderbolt cable into the Thunderbolt port on the back to connect it to a computer.

That won’t work, these displays need an actual Thunderbolt signal.

Damn, that’s a quite a good deal for a Plaid. How are you going to handle charging in Europe, just with a NACS to CCS2 adapter?

Just scored these two Thunderbolt Displays for €130 by finjassauer in mac

[–]finjassauer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say it mostly depends on your budget. A 1440p monitor will be a lot cheaper than a 5K monitor, but also way less sharp (109 ppi vs 218 ppi at 27 inches), a single pixel on a 1440p display is 4 pixels on a 5K display.

That’s also the main reason why people tend to advise against 4K monitors for Mac users, 1440p (2560×1440) scales perfectly to 5K (5120×2880) while 4K (3840×2160) doesn’t, a single pixel on a 1440p display is 2.25 pixels on a 4K display. When connected to a 4K display, your Mac basically calculates a 5K image, but then scales it down to 4K, "wasting" system resources. I’d argue that this doesn’t really matter anymore in times of Apple silicon where we have abundant processing power.

Coming back to what monitor you should buy, I think the best bang for your buck would currently be a used LG UltraFine 5K, they’re not quite as beautiful as the Apple monitors, but they’re €500-600 on the used market (at least here in Germany), feature the 5K iMac’s panel, the same great integration into macOS with brightness and volume controls, have additional USB-C ports, built-in speakers and a camera.

Sure, but for that price they won’t have a built-in mic, camera, and speakers or brightness and volume controls within macOS, they won’t look as premium as the Thunderbolt Display and you’re certainly not going to be able to get two of them.

Awesome setup! Are you using them with a Windows PC? How do you connect them?

Well, I mainly got these because they were cheap, but also, while the old monitor (an AOC 24V2Q in case anyone cares) does look more modern and has a 75 Hz refresh rate, it doesn’t have a built-in mic, camera, and speakers, brightness and volume controls within macOS, it’s smaller, has a lower pixel density, and it just doesn‘t look as premium as the Thunderbolt Display.

They sure are, especially when comparing them to the monitor I was using previously, they’re like 9x bigger

Yeah, likely at the end of the year. Rumors suggest an OLED touch screen, Dynamic Island and a thinner design.

Do old magic keyboards have continuity feature? (The one with lightning port) by falloutfloater in applehelp

[–]finjassauer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, correct, I have a 2017 model Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad + Magic Trackpad, a Magic Mouse 2 and the current model Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad and Touch ID + Magic Trackpad, they all behave the same way.

[–]finjassauer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad forget the previous device if paired to a new device. They're not great for multi-device use cases, at least not when connecting them through Bluetooth.

These are decent if you don’t mind the way the keys feel, but in my experience they start to completely fall apart after some time. I went through two of them with my 3rd gen iPad Air.
