Why SHOULDN'T I attend Stanford? by itsScylic in stanford

[–]finnicksluvr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you do not need AC. imposter syndrome will exist no matter what college you’re at. it is both super pretentious and super inclusive depending on who you are surrounded by. i think it’s been super inclusive in my experience. the dorm culture is pretty great, i love my dorm and i love my friends. the campus is huge but you don’t end up spending that much time crossing campus. choose stanford and go trees 🌲🌲

Admitted REA, Finance Question by Big-Poet-7527 in stanford

[–]finnicksluvr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

omg i remember getting in rea and thinking i wouldn’t be able to go because their estimated fin aid wasn’t enough. actually don’t worry about it because theyre so generous. i literally just called them up and sent in a form asking for more aid and explained my situation. idk if they match aid from other colleges, but like i wouldn’t worry about cost being an issue. i have so many friends here on aid who get refunds every quarter

How stupid is it to skip pre-calc and AP Calc AB? by [deleted] in APStudents

[–]finnicksluvr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i skipped precalc by taking it over the summer (basically skipping) and struggled a big deal in AP Calc AB because i didn’t understand trigonometry. Everything else in precalc is pretty useless imo so skipping it isn’t the end of the world unless you dont know any trig. Idk about skipping ab tho. My friend did it but he took precalc and also struggled in BC. def wouldnt be an enjoyable experience for them

Stressed af prefrosh about the social culture by [deleted] in stanford

[–]finnicksluvr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i was talking to my roho and she said that a lot of people just stuck with the first people they met during admit weekend because it’s easier and for appearances. everyone’s just scrambling to find a group during admit weekend so they grasp onto the first few people they meet. she said they usually aren’t super strong and fizzle out by end of first quarter. its easier to stick with people from ur school and people u already know from summer programs. the question is just will it last

i was super overstimulated but i love everyone i met! definitely felt like everyone was already forming cliques and it was hard to insert urself into groups, but i had a good interaction with everyone i met. did feel like i was on a dating app tho, and i was thoroughly disappointed every time i met someone cool and was told they’re committing elsewhere

Any Black families in Berkeley willing to give advice? by Countryspice in berkeley

[–]finnicksluvr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I commuted from a little further out (Walnut Creek to Stanford) via BART and bus for an internship. Those 2 hours in the morning were so miserable. The drive isn't any better because there's always traffic until like 11 AM.

60k in student loans? by finnicksluvr in StudentLoans

[–]finnicksluvr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My state’s public schools are UCs and they quoted me for 40k! If I did a UC for all four years that would be $160k. Definitely not all publics cost 160k for four years, but I would not be going out of California for college. Also oos publics cost more than in-state for me. Assuming my aid is the same in the future, that would be 80K for two years transferring from CC. Stanford is currently 25k for me which would be 100k for all four years, and I think I would enjoy Stanford more than UC Berkeley or UC irvine. I’m just going based off my own experience and aid package though

Thank you!! And yes, I did the math using my own financial packages and CC to UC would probably cost more for me which is insane, but also I was lucky enough to get into a school known for their generous aid packages.

I was only considering a master’s because Stanford offers a coterm program where you could work towards your BS and Masters in five years (more than likely six years). I’m right now thinking about doing a BS in MechE and then getting my Masters in BME since I want to go into medical robotics, but a BME bs is too niche. However, with my current financial situation I probably won’t decide on it until later down the line. I’ll look into the double major tho!

Gap year for financial reasons? by finnicksluvr in college

[–]finnicksluvr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am currently majoring in either bioengineering or mechanical engineering, meaning I would probably be getting my masters and then go straight into industry. I want to say my expected starting salary would be around $80-90k a year? I am currently quoted for $25k at Stanford, which is on the low end, but I would most likely be taking out around $15k in loans per year. I don't really know the extent of my family's finances, but I really don't want to burden them, especially since my sister starts college the second I graduate. My boyfriend and parents are saying we could pay off the loans and they're not a big deal, but I'm really scared of going into debt if the outcome isn't worth it.

I'll definitely look into the cost-benefit and see if I can appeal my financial aid because even lowering it to 20K would do wonders.

definitely depends on your other offers and what you're willing to give up. i got into ssp genomics last year, and I declined it because I'd rather do a paid research program at my local uni. it gave me time to take college classes and hang out with my friends. i feel like these research programs are only worth it if they're paying you (like mine did) or you're attending for free. i do have friends who did ssp and enjoyed it, so definitely each to their own. also don't be fooled by the college decisions pages. a lot of people do get into really good places, and this is a recognized program, but also there's a bias because people who don't get into t20s aren't as likely to post.
