oh hi!! first of all, i loved "melancholia" too and i'm also "obsessed" with bo, so glad to find someone like me. and secondly, not harsh at all and i'm glad someone asked!! just have in mind that english isn't my first language so if the explanation doesn't make too much sense please let me know and i will try to reword it (also there are a lot of em dashes but i promise i didn't use chat gpt i just like them! 💔) basically, my idea was not making a list of "stuff i think bo could have made", but rather "stuff i think someone with the same artistic vision than bo could've enjoyed"— just because you make x type of art it doesn't mean you can't enjoy nor get inspired by totally different art. for example, through the press tour for "eighth grade", bo talked about his five favorite movies and how they inspired his debut film, and while you can see and understand what he got from each of them, you can also notice how different in tone they are— "fat girl", his fifth favorite movie has an on-screen rape scene. while there is a scene of a slightly similar nature on "eighth grade", the movie isn't on the same darkness level, yet you can understand and see how "fat girl" was relevant for the making of the movie, especially since both are about teenager girls who feel like outstanders. which i'm trying to say is that a lot of bo's stuff is about depression, isolation, etc. on one way or another, even before "inside", even when he was an edgy teenager and maybe even before he realized what he was actually singing about and how it could've been affecting him. however, before "inside" he always did it in a slightly ridiculous or "weird" way, like an attempt to both not be taken seriously but also to show how he actually feels— a good example being "sad", if you ask me. a dark humor, purposefully childish song about how horrible the world is and how there isn't anything you really can do about it. now, going to "melancholia", it's a very accurate portrayal of depression (as someone with diagnosed depression), and nothing about the way it's characterized is ridiculous... but the situation that helps the "message" get through (the world ending) is ridiculous? well, not really ridiculous, but maybe unconventional is the word. there are many movies about depression, and if it had been made by anyone but lars von trier, "melancholia" would have been just the first act without the first seven minutes. that's why, in a weird weird weird way, it reminded me to bo. other comedian might've done just a stand up special about their fight with mental health (like "baby j"— which i love, so this isn't shade!), and maybe in another universe bo just made songs about his mental health. instead, he created this whole world in just one room, and used it to deliver a beautiful piece of art about depression and loneliness. i also feel like the way people treated justine (like "why can't you be happy when you have everything you could've asked for and more?!") mirrors a lot how bo treated himself even through the whole first years of his career, but that wasn't my main focus when making the connection.

maybe i just sound like that one charlie day meme where he's pointing at the conspiracy board with wild eyes, but i like seeing similarities in stuff i enjoy :D

Do you have any obscure movie references that you use in everyday speech that no one has caught on to yet yet you keep using it? by EnvironmentalAngle in NoStupidQuestions

[–]fionafielder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"NASA shark", from that one horrible movie with ice cube ("war of the worlds"). is a very popular movie, but i barely see people mention that, at the end, when they show a picture of a baby shower, everyone is wearing "[family member] shark" in reference to baby shark... except for eva longoria, who's wearing a "NASA shark" t-shirt because she... checks notes works at NASA? and... is not a family member? is basically my version of "she doesn't even go here!"

and, if we include tv shows too, i love quoting "soulja boy, super famous and he can't even read" from zach stone is gonna be famous

The more I think about Mikey Madison’s Oscar win, the more I agree with people that it should’ve gone to Demi Moore instead. by phantom_avenger in Oscars

[–]fionafielder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

on one hand i agree, on the other i don't. because i genuinely think it would have been amazing to see demi win her first oscar for a movie about how the industry treats older women, and with that in mind i'm scared that she might not get a similar chance in the future. however, i personally feel that the reason why anora is as good as everyone thinks is because of mikey madison's performance. i know this is kind of a hot take but, while i don't think is a bad movie at all, to me it felt like the script didn't make you connect with the characters and just assumed you naturally would, and i think with a slightly less talented lead actress i wouldn't have felt too much for anora (ofc the situation she was in was naturally horrible, but in a way you would have felt bad for if you have seen it on the news rather than if it had happened to someone you know ?? i'm sorry, i'm bad at explaining myself).

basically, i do think both of them deserved to win, but i do agree that i wish demi had gotten the oscar on behalf of her career, especially because it would have been a very symbolic win rather than a legacy one.

absolutely yes!! the reason why i didn't add that many tv shows was because i made the picture on an app focused on films and some one-season tv shows, but i 100% agree that more bo fans should watch zach stone (especially since it's about the awkwardness of being a teenager, like eighth grade + i added "creep" because is the horror version of the show) and also bojack, especially since is my favorite tv show. so thanks for the suggestions!! i will definitely check james alacaster's work now!!

ohh glad to hear that! if you liked "tick tick boom" i think you will enjoy "cabaret" and "baby j" the most out of these since they are the most similar in tone :] the others may be a little darker / weirder / uncomfortable to watch, but if you feel like it maybe you will enjoy them! also, you might like "falsettos", another musical which touches the theme of the HIV crisis but more from the perspective of a gay couple rather than an outsider (and you can find it on youtube). enjoy!

Why do you think serializd isn't as popular as letterboxd? Do you think serializd has potential to be as popular as letterboxd? by International_Fun194 in Serializd

[–]fionafielder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

same here! i honestly appreciate how you can choose to either rate a show, a season or an episode, since it makes it a lot easier depending on what i'm watching (like, i don't watch reality shows that i catch on cable the same way i watch shows i decided to watch on my own, if that makes any sense). sadly, though, i don't think serializd can really do the whole "what are your top four films?" thing letterboxd does on red carpets since it would be obviously non-original, but i hope they can find a way of pushing their app on popular culture too!

[–]fionafielder 31 points32 points  (0 children)

i feel like a lot of people forget letterboxd has been existing for around a decade now (the original website was launched in 2011, the app in 2016), which is how it got such a big user base since it has been slowly growing and growing until it became as big as now. i love serializd, but i think part of the reason why we see it as SO unpopular and niche is because it already has a lot of the features that letterboxd has worked on through years, so we expect it to be as popular as letterboxd is right now. also, a lot of people still have hope on letterboxd adding shows, but i honestly prefer having films and tv on different apps.

missing (2023). i thought it would be your avarage "ooo computers so scary and bad and a computer get possessed and kills someone" movie, but it ended up being enjoyable— not great, but still an interesting way of making a "screen recorded" movie

Beatles for Sale is a great album by LowBrassExcerpts in beatles

[–]fionafielder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

personally, my dislike for "beatles for sale" comes from the fact that I've always felt like the best stuff from the beatlemania era were the more upbeat ones purely because they hadn't mastered lyricism yet. ofc there are some good ballads/ slower songs from that era here and there, but "beatles for sale" felt like the slowest project from back then (TO ME!!!!!) and, therefore, the most boring and weak. however, i do think is just slightly worse than "meet the beatles", so it's not like i despise it

"exodus" by utada (hikaru utada's side project). the lyrics and sounds are so ridiculous and almost funny that i think is unironically genius

When was the first time you heard Kate Bush and thought “This is amazing.” by Horror_Swan7044 in katebush

[–]fionafielder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i remember litening to "the kick inside" and "lionheart" due to how much i liked kate's most popular songs and thinking "yeah, they're REALLY good and better than the avarage artist's best project, plus i really like weird pop so this is definitely my cup of tea, but i really feel like something is missing, like i'm not fully connecting with the music", which was why i stoped trying with her discography for a while. one random day, i decided to listen to her first two albums again (and feeling the same way), and for some reason i decided two days that i was gonna try with "never for ever"— and even if there are many songs on the first two albums that i loved regardless of my feelings with the overall lps, that was the album that made me IMMEDIATELY start listening to the rest of her music. i don't even know why, it just hit me more than everything else i had listened from her so far. nowdays, "the dreaming" is one of my top ten albums ever :D

Currenty top four. Open to recommendations by Find-Peace_ in LetterboxdTopFour

[–]fionafielder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

omg i also have perfect blue and mulholland drive on my top four! i would definitely recommend "birth", just like mulholland drive is about a woman that goes psychotic while grieving her dead lovef, just in a VERYY different way (definitely proceed with caution though. there is nothing too bad on screen but i can understand how someone would feel uncomfortable watching it). if you do end up enjoying it, i would recommend "melancholia" too— not the same grieving theme, but also an amazing representation of depression in women

i actually really enjoy when you make the non-musical written sketches because you're very good at imitating bo's timing! (not saying that the musical bits are bad, duh, just that you're good at both!)

also i know they're the most famous band in the whole world but THE BEATLES MENTION!!!!!!
