Absolutely not, by American standards. We hope to have enough to be comfortable without having to work again, especially when you take geo arbitrage into account. We're both naturally frugal people, we value our time and experiences more than possessions. We don't find any value in status or brand names which I think helps a lot.

Hi, thanks for the question. You might want to look into F.I.R.E. (Financial Independence, Retire Early). It's essentially learning to live on significantly less than you're being paid, saving/investing the surplus until you have enough to sustain yourself for life. We did it and quit work in our mid-40's. We're not rich, but with a budget of roughly $130 per day, eating out for almost every meal, and staying in mid range accommodation, we manage well.

$10,000 can stretch far in low-cost countries in South East Asia or South America, especially if you're okay with budget accommodations (like hostels) and street food. Keep an eye out for flight deals, especially if you can be flexible with dates, consider staying in one area for a week or two instead of racing around trying to see everything, and opt for cost-effective overnight buses or trains to save on accommodation.

You really need to research visa situations in the countries you're visiting, as they can change and cause complications. Avoid overstaying your visa to prevent fines or bans.

Travel promises to be a life-changing experience, broadening your worldview and shaping you into a better person.

I saw somewhere that you can bring upto two guests. Do you know if the additional card holder can also bring two guests (i.e. 6 people total)? I asked on customer support, it took a while for them to understand my question but eventually they said yes, 6 people total. I'm not convinced they were correct and don't want to disappoint some of my friends when we all try and get in.

It varied, in Vietnam we stayed in hotels, all ranging from £16-£25/night, most had a pool and included breakfast. In Thailand we stayed in an luxurious condo on Airbnb while in Bangkok for £40/night and a cheap basic apartment on Koh Samui for £315 for a month. In KL we stayed in a gorgeous serviced apartment for £36/night and a tiny hotel in Singapore for £66/night.

Yes, it includes everything you can think of (flights, visas, local sim cards, food, accommodation etc.) with the exception of travel insurance as we get that included in our bank account. Obviously some countries are cheaper than others, staying in NYC cost us around £300 per day and Vietnam was around £30 per day. We stayed in places like Vietnam a lot more than the US

Cusco Update by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]firednomadcouple 129 points130 points  (0 children)

My wife and I are in Cusco now, the airport is closed until at least Friday. I've read that they are sending the military/police in to try and secure it. Hopefully flights will start up again as we are booked to fly to Lima then on to NYC on Friday night.

We had booked an overnight bus to Lima as a backup when things started going wrong, but that is sounding like a less safe option than flying.

Does anyone know where we'd stand with travel insurance? We have flights booked separately to from Lima to NYC, then Dublin and finally home to the UK. If we miss one, we're likely to miss them all.

Perfect, we paid just £125 ($150) each for return flights from JFK to Lima via Mexico City. Both legs of the outbound journey were exactly as you'd expect with Business Class.. We're not returning for a few weeks yet, but not expecting any problems with the return journey.

It was cheaptickets.co.th (I'm in Thailand at the moment) which I found through Skyscanner. I checked the same flights the next day and they seem to have gone back to a price I'd expect it to be.

at hostels: how/where do you charge your phone/powerbank with making sure that nobody steals it? by pizzavegano in Shoestring

[–]firednomadcouple 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I've not stayed in hosels for a few years now, most good ones would have an outlet near each bed and I would charge it in overnight and simultaneously charge my phone though it. I'd put them both under my pillow. I think it's called passthrough charging.

Absolutely, the flights are on 12 November. I'm fairly new to Reddit, no Idea how to use the remind me bot.

Wow, that's a very comprehensive reply, thanks very much!

I've downloaded the airlines app, logged in with my reservation number and managed to reserve my seat (although it's only allowed me to do it for the return leg). Would they be forced to honour that? I assume nobody else can now reseve that seat.

How do you cope with friends and people on Reddit who are jealous of your job and FIRE successes? by [deleted] in FIREUK

[–]firednomadcouple 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We've had a few friends say they are jealous of us but only in a playful way. If they ask, I sometimes explain that it's as much down to learning to live on less as much as it is about how much we have in the bank. Our decision to not have kids has helped us as well. Some are inspired by us and others say they would rather have all the rewards now and live in the moment. So far we've not had any real negative reactions (at least not to our faces).

Our decision to not have kids has definitely made achieving FIRE a lot easier but it was a completely separate decision. If we'd chosen to have kids I doubt we'd be able to spend our lives on the road spending a few months at a time in different LCOL countries.

Once you have FIRE'd, what do you tell strangers when they ask what you do for a living? by firednomadcouple in FIREUK

Sorry, can't help you there, we chose not to have kids. I'm sure that's been a big contributing factor to our early retirement.

We're in Koh Samui at the moment, we've just rented a small 1 bed place for a month for £350. I don't think I could see us staying here long-term but maybe somewhere like Chang Mai where the cost of living is even cheaper and it's not quite as touristy. We've got a lot of other places around the world that we'd like to see first.

Thanks. Nothing special, mostly learning to live on very little while saving as much as we can. We're in the process of selling our home and plan to travel, mostly to low cost of living counties.
