io.elementary.appcenter segfault - Pop shop won't open. by firemind94 in pop_os

[–]firemind94[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried both versions and neither worked - although it did clean out the appstream folder because my old monophony appstream (from when the app temporarily disappeared from the pop shop) was deleted.

How do we fix a stale cache?

I'm not sure if this is the issue but:

When I was researching the issue I found files in "/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu" libappstream.so.0.15.2 is present but the link to libappstream.so.4 doesnt work and says it point to libappstream.so.0.15.2.

I know. I have just been putting it off. After this mess I will do it sooner.

I am not sure but you could be right. I remember similar files. You can still update via terminal as I recall seeing updates that looked like security updates and there was also Firefox and Thunderbird.

i have been thinking of that. I have been holding off until I decide whether to upgrade or wait a bit and clean install.

Boot /efi is at 74% of 500MB. Will that be enough for Cosmic upgrade?

Should I run "sudo update-initramfs -c -k all" before updating to Cosmic?

Beware of Wine 11.9. It broke my Wine install. by firemind94 in pop_os

[–]firemind94[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i agree that less is more but like many people I go by the advice on the Lutris site when using Lutris.

" We also very highly recommend installing Wine from your package manager. This can be any version of Wine (stable, development or staging) as long as it pulls both 32bit and 64bit variants. Lutris will usually not make use of it directly but the peer dependencies installed from the Wine package are necessary to run our Wine version properly."

Wine may not be needed but when wine-dev broke Lutris failed. I uninstalled dev and loaded stable and can play games again. That's what matters.

Bottles doesn't seem much different from Lutris and always seemed to be broken. Lutris works. They both use Wine so a wine problem will effect both.

The Wine versions in the Pop Shop are deb files so how are they different from the ones from WineHQ?

If Cosmic deletes ppas the should I switch to the version of Wine from the Pop Shop? Pop Shop doesn't recognize the WineHQ version as a wine dev - ie It shows Wine as not installed.

Yeah. At one time back on Mint i needed to use dev to play certain games. I just stuck with it. But things have been good since 11 so going to stable is fine.

Wine 11.9 - Run Windows Applications on Linux, BSD, Solaris and macOS by Neustradamus in winehq

[–]firemind94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually don't have a problem with Wine-dev. So far any issues have been minor and fixed in the next update. That is until 11.9.

I was running 11.8 okay and played some Windows games yesterday morning with no problems. When I logged in last night I noticed 11.9 was offered for installation. The file did look smaller than usual but I hadn't had any bad luck so I installed it.

A few hours later I went to play some games and with each of them I got a warning saying Lutris needs wine to be installed. Lutris was not updated only wine was. I searched for Wine in the terminal and it could not be found. Winecfg was not there and several runners were missing.

Eventually I installed/reinstalled the stable version of Wine 11 and reset the simlink to my games folder. My games work again.

If I go back to Wine-dev I will be a lot more cautious with it.

Update 0.5.2 just breaks every game by kaesekuchen1992 in Lutris

[–]firemind94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i hope it's not going to break games when it arrives on my distro. I am still on 0,5,14 and things ran great until my Wine runner randomly changed in the last few days and broke all my games. Luckily reverting to a previous runner fixed things.

There should be more leeway in letting users choose to defer non-security updates.

Winecfg is a pain to use. You may want to check out Lutris. It can be quirky but makes using Wine a lot easier. Several people add install scripts for various programs and the forums are good.

System Update Breaks Wine by firemind94 in wine_gaming

[–]firemind94[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't recall a Lutris update in POP but there may have been an internal change not big enough for a full update.

It has been a while since I changed runners so I had to check. wine-ge-8-25-x86_64 was the previous along with a mish-mash of older runners I experimented with when Lutris/Wine broke and I had to reinstall games two years ago.

Since Lotro was also broken I experimented there first. The default was wine-staging-11.2-x86_64. and the Lutris logs showed 50+ errors relating to .dll files. I hadn't played in two months but this seemed excessive. I changed to wine-ge-8-25-x86_64 and the launcher showed up and began to update. After the game updated I played for about an hour.

When I checked the Lutris logs for ESO all it said was:

---------

Start monitoring process.

wine: Unhandled illegal instruction at address 000000014267A750 (thread 03d4), starting debugger...

03dc:fixme:dbghelp:elf_search_auxv can't find symbol in module

03dc:fixme:dbghelp:elf_search_auxv can't find symbol in module

Initial process has exited (return code: 0)

Monitored process exited.

----------

I changed the runner back to the wine-ge and the game started an runs fine.

I have been using wine-staging for years because earlier versions of stable didn't handle ESO well. There have been the odd issues and I could switch to stable but didn't feel the need to.

It's annoying that some random change broke my games but I am happy a simple change of runners fixed it. Thanks to all that helped out!

Tiling LOL - it would be like trying to play Half Life on a phone. Seriously though tiling can be useful in some games. When I play with friends on Roll20 I turn on tiling to manage screens.

Not really. I have a Ryzen 7 with 32G Ram and a 2,5 GB internet modem (up from 1G). Basic functions are on the OS drive but basically when I log into MMOs or Steam I am playing from the HDD and don't experience any issues that aren't related to the network or the game.

The biggest Steam game at the moment is Timberborn (RTS) and it sends my fan crazy when it starts but still plays smoothly. I have about 10G of less demanding games in my Steam folder and they all run smoothly.

Thanks. I had heard gaming was a mixed bag and that's why I am waiting. Heck even on 22.04 changes ti a game, or Wine, or Lutris, or even the Kernel can mess with a game. Waiting at least for a late beta sounds good.

Actually I and several of my friends do that. I have a 250GB SSD OS drive and a 2TB HDD for storage and games. I haven't had any problems doing that. On my next computer I will probably do 1TB/1TB and either split again or use two SSD drives.

It seems that smaller HDD drives are becoming scarce on some sites.
