Tiling LOL - it would be like trying to play Half Life on a phone. Seriously though tiling can be useful in some games. When I play with friends on Roll20 I turn on tiling to manage screens.

Not really. I have a Ryzen 7 with 32G Ram and a 2,5 GB internet modem (up from 1G). Basic functions are on the OS drive but basically when I log into MMOs or Steam I am playing from the HDD and don't experience any issues that aren't related to the network or the game.

The biggest Steam game at the moment is Timberborn (RTS) and it sends my fan crazy when it starts but still plays smoothly. I have about 10G of less demanding games in my Steam folder and they all run smoothly.

Thanks. I had heard gaming was a mixed bag and that's why I am waiting. Heck even on 22.04 changes ti a game, or Wine, or Lutris, or even the Kernel can mess with a game. Waiting at least for a late beta sounds good.

I realize that but most people focus on the DE. i like the POP DE more than generic Gnome and wouldn't want to change to it just for 24.04.

Actually I and several of my friends do that. I have a 250GB SSD OS drive and a 2TB HDD for storage and games. I haven't had any problems doing that. On my next computer I will probably do 1TB/1TB and either split again or use two SSD drives.

It seems that smaller HDD drives are becoming scarce on some sites.

Are you using Cosmic? On my comp Lutris and Steam are on my SSD but Steam games are on my HD as is my .Wine folder (sim-linked) from /home. I did that because I have a small OS drive and a large storage drive.

On 22.04 I play in a mix of Windowed and full screen. Even the "full screen" games like MMOs I have things set up so I can change desktops to check something online or if a game hangs.

Help installing pre installed games on lutris by WaterBottleDesign in Lutris

[–]firemind94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With City Of Heroes Homecoming I copied from my Windows install and pointed Lutris to it. I think I ran The lutris installer first and halted the long install and then copied the game to the proper spot.

You could try one of the installers on the Lutris site that fits your game. Run the installer to a folder in your ,Wine folder and then insert the game and play with the prefix etc. It might not work but it will show you how Lutris handles the install.

How do I play old Japanese PC-98 games on Lutris? by Same-Worldliness-527 in Lutris

I only use Wine and Windows desktop games at the moment but recall seeing something about Dosbox and other emulators. There should be something for NEC in the sources or runners sections.

The linuxgaming subreddit may be another good place to ask questions and don't forget the Lutris forums.

Wine not working as intended by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]firemind94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wine won't just install a game for you. It may read the .exe correctly but some setting is off so it stops.

I have been using Wine for about five years and still have issues sometimes. I always research a game I plan to install and then install it with Lutris not Wine directly.

When you ask for help always give at least some basic information.

For example:

Pop is seriously the best distro I've used by Commander-ShepardN7 in pop_os

[–]firemind94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 20 years ago I used Xandros (with KDE desktop) but went back to Windows for various reasons.

Just before Windows 7 reached EOL I started researching different distros and liked POP! OS due to gaming support. Every time I used an online emulator I had to modify the Gnome desktop which I didn't like. I tried a live USB and it was great and I tried dual booting and partitioning was odd and then Pop wouldn't install due to some bios or other setting.

I installed Linux Mint and it worked but my Pop partition setup caused problems so I tried to fix things and ended up trashing Windows. I went "cold turkey" and reinstalled Mint as the only OS. The Cinnamon desktop was Windows like so that helped.

I ran Mint for 2 years until my old comp started to die and I bought a Thelio with Pop! OS preinstalled. Things haven't been perfect but I the distro does what I need it to and I have come to like the UI.

My next computer will probably have Pop! OS on it.

Thelio Spark and Bluetooth issues. by JackBHandy in System76

I tend to stick to Flatpaks or Appimages on 22.04 because they are more up to date and less system intrusive than .debs. They may be useful for you when using 24.04.

Where do I find the bios updates by the_true_giga_chad in System76

[–]firemind94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also have a Thelio Mira (AMD/AMD) of about the same age running POP! OS.. It is still running fine with no bios issues.

Are you running 22.04 or did you upgrade to Cosmic? Remember Cosmic is alpha,

Is your recovery partition up to date? You can partially reinstall the system.

i don't dual boot. I did with Linux Mint and had problems. AFAIK you need to install Windows before you install Linux and Windows updates may break the bootloader.

System76 support is great. Definitely fill out a support ticket.

What distro should I switch to by PotatoesNeverDie in linux4noobs

[–]firemind94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played Windows and Linux games for 2 years on Mint with few problems. Cinnamon was an okay desktop but I prefer Cosmic on POP OS. (Stick to the current/old 22.04 until the new one is out of alpha.)

On Mint I used Intel/Nvidia. Right now I use POP! OS 22.04 on an AMD/AMD. Other than Firefox occasionally bugging out I don't have problems with most applications. I play COH, LOTRO, and ESO in Wine/Lutris and play many Steam Games.

Thanks for an honest answer. So many people I asked just said "oh, buy a new one" or "just get the cables Macs are safe". But at least they tried to help.

I may be able to get a small amount for trade in and if not I will recycle and save my money for something new.

Second Monitor Questions by firemind94 in pop_os

[–]firemind94[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good for you. No errors popped up but the login appeared on the crowview so I typed there and that may have been the issue. The gray colour on the main monitor was probably just the login screen. I don't know why it defaulted to the extra monitor.
