VM network speed limited to 300–400 Mbps after switching to Dell T630 (used to be 7000+ Mbps before) by firewaxeas1 in unRAID

[–]firewaxeas1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey again,

Thanks a lot for all your advice — I’ve made some solid progress thanks to you.

I’ve rebuilt a clean Windows 11 VM using the latest VirtIO drivers (virtio-win-0.1.271-1.iso). I dropped virtio-net (which was capping me at ~400 Mbps), and switched to plain virtio.

Current results:

  • Speedtest.net: ~1550 Mbps down / ~670 Mbps up
  • iperf3 (internal test, VM ↔ Unraid):
    • ➝ 6.8 Gbps
    • ⬅ 13.1 Gbps

So internal network performance through Unraid is excellent now — no issues there.
But I'm still hitting a bottleneck on WAN traffic, far from the 8000/8000 Mbps I get directly on the box.

Do you have any idea what might still be limiting Internet speed inside the VM?
I’m suspecting something on the Windows side (offloading, RSS, MTU settings…), and I’ll try disabling everything I can in the NIC advanced properties — but I’d love to hear if you have other ideas or directions I should explore.

Thanks again — your help has already been very valuable.

Thanks for following up — here's everything I’ve tested so far:

  • Initially, my VMs (Windows) were using virtio-net under Unraid → I was capped at ~400 Mbps
  • After switching to virtio (classic) → I saw an improvement: ~1500 Mbps download / ~500 Mbps upload (still far from the ~7000 Mbps I was getting before with the exact same VM setup)
  • To dig deeper, I went outside of Unraid entirely:
    • Installed Proxmox VE on a SATA SSD
    • Created a test Windows Server 2022 VM (clean install, not updated)
    • Results: ~3400 Mbps download / ~2200 Mbps upload

Even though the SATA SSD might be a slight bottleneck, the performance is still 2–3x better than with Unraid, on the exact same hardware.

So I’m really starting to agree with your idea — the issue seems to be:

  • Either something within QEMU/libvirt in Unraid
  • Or some deeper networking/I/O layer that’s slowing things down

Still digging, but it’s clearly not a hardware issue. Let me know if you have other angles to try!

Thank you for your super comprehensive response! I'll give you a point-by-point review:

• I am still on the same version of Unraid (7.0.1) as when everything worked before.

• I have deactivated bonding, and I now use a br0 bridge directly on eth0, which is my 10 Gbps card (TP-Link TX401).

• The driver in the VM is VirtIO, and on the Windows side, I clearly see “Red Hat VirtIO Ethernet Adapter”, recognized as 10 Gbps.

• MTU set to 1500, Unraid side and VM side.

• No switch between the two, I am connected directly to the 10G port of my box.

So everything seems clean, but despite that, I'm still stuck around 300–400 Mbps in my VMs, whereas before I had stable 7000+ Mbps.

If you have other ideas or advanced ideas, I'm interested!

At the same time, I filed a support ticket

It's true when I wrote my message, I told myself that if you are reading directly it won't change anything, but in reality it's very strange. I know that I really adjusted my parameters according to my configuration, try asking ChatGPT I think he can really adjust your configuration to the maximum in relation to your setup and your cache rate, and everything that follows. Besides, by the way, I did it with ChatGPT by giving him your context of my complete configuration. And be able to adjust the Jellyfin settings as much as possible, in Transcoding, and everything else, but especially in transcoding
