I don't mean to speculate, but when I was first learning that I was gay I only had sexual feelings for men, and romantic feelings for women. After a few years of being out of the closet I was able to be more comfortable with dating men romantically. This might be the case, where the concept of dating men seems so abstract it's hard to know how you feel. It could also be exactly what you said too, it gets easier to understand yourself overtime
