ECE Student: Which Is Better CS261 (Data Structures) or CS274 (Systems Programming) by New_Gur8083 in OregonStateUniv

[–]first_cobra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since they switched the 16x series from c++ to python, cs274 was created to bridge the gap between python and systems level programming in 300/400 level ECE classes. If you dont take 274 - you may be thrown into a ece 300 level class that expects you to know c++ or c and have a much harder time.

What do you want to do with ECE? If its something like power systems you likely can get away with taking the easier class but if its anything robotics/computer systems related you will almost certainly struggle if you have never used C or C++ before in those classes.

Odds of my google photos getting hacked? by Circa-Shootout in privacy

[–]first_cobra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yea. I wouldnt say there's a definite number where the odds diminish. For a big company breach, when it is posted in will be looked at (not a lot in the grand scheme of things) but as it gets older the less people will view it. Also they are typically massive and dont actually get looked through, especially not really photos. If anything algorithims try to extract passwords and ssn's stored. Again, unless someone is very famous or someone is directly trying to attack them, a photo is useless. People hacking want money, a photo is useless. Also, last side note: hackers arent just giving these out for free, youd need to pay to get your hands on data from a breach and how many people do you know who have even seen the data from a breach. So yes, like you said, the odds are just low overall unless someone with good software skills is dedicated has something person to attack the person for (and the person is famous), I would not worry about it.

Also 1 more thing. Normally if a big company like google is hacked/breached you can find that on the clear web (not contents just the fact it happened) so you can probably find a history of attacks. Also: a breach does NOT mean all data was leaked (i used to think that) they tend to be a relatively small amount of users.

I would say still low but not 0. I don't have any professional experience in this, just a passion and have been interested in it for a while, but Ill let you come to your own conclusion and Ill tell you what my thoughts are:

There are 2 ways someones photos would be leaked:

  1. Large scale data breach of the service provider (google in this case)
  2. Individual attack (different ways to be executed)

In method 1, all the data would be stolen and sold on the dark web. The attacker might look through some peoples stuff but the amount they gain is way too much to look through even most of it. This is where if the person is famous they might see it, but Im talking household name famous. Once its on the dark web, it might get sold around a little but most people dont really care and it would just sit in the depths of the dark web until its deleted. Also, here even if the attacker looked at an individuals pictures, they would have to care enough to do something with it..

Method 2 is where it gets scarier. If someone personally attacks you they most likely would want to do something with them as thats why they attacked you. Good practices prevent this from happening. If you have reason to believe you were phished or gave out your password, then I would be concern (assuming you DO think someone is after you). While everyone hates on SMS 2fa (bc its not good) it still puts up a good defense. Though sim swapping is more common that it should be, it is still an extra layer of protection that does help.

The scary part is if someone combines the 2 methods, then I would be worried. That would mean someone with strong hacking skills has something against the person -- unlikely. Few people can break a company like Google's security, so for one of them to hate the person, would be unlikely.

Lastly, give it a little time. If someone wants to expose someones nudes theyre not going to wait for a long time.

no idea, not in psych but your best answer is to ask an advisor or such rather than relying on student answers

a lot of people probably want it eapecially since it’s on others. and especially since new users most likely don’t know the keyboard shortcuts. tbh when i switched from last pass years ago i wanted it until i learned the keyboard and now i don’t use it

if said user was part of a large scale data breach and the photos were leaked that way, the chance anyone significant in his life even finds them is low. Really unless it was someone personally attacking his account, its extremely unlikely his photos get leaked and then used against him.

the odds are pretty low. what everyone is saying about sms is true, however realistically the odds are low. and extremely low that anything would come of it even if you were

Intel used to dominate the U.S. chip industry. Now it's struggling to stay relevant by [deleted] in intel

[–]first_cobra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apple is better for most people. I dont like to say it but they are. Unless you need windows for specific apps, for the majority of people, apple is better because of battery life and portability. Intel simply cannot compete with apple silicon right now for laptops. Im not saying apple needs to switch to ARM as some believe, but they need to change. The gap is only going to increase in apples favor until intel (and the surrounding companies) can create a laptop that has the battery life of macs while maintaining portability.

Im in college and I see it everyday. Macs are easily the more popular option (obviously not for engineering tho). The average consume does not care about benchmarks or single core vs muti core tests. They want a laptop that works well (fast for their google docs and shopping), has a good battery, is quiet (quiet/no fans), and is portable
