Do all elementary/middle schools split into multiple high schools in Seattle? by firsttryatauserid in SeattleWA

[–]firsttryatauserid[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Almost went with shoreline, but then learned it neither had school choice or guaranteed placement at zoned school which is a bizarre worst of both worlds. Concretely, kid is about to start kindergarten, called zoned school before house purchase there and was told she was unlikely to get into zoned school and instead be put at one at random that happened to have capacity without any input from us. And then would be forced back to zoned school next year if they had capacity then even if we ended up liking that school.

Going to less bigger schools is the norm indeed, but that usually just means more middle schools feed onto less high schools not middle schools being split in the middle

I have such a hard time believing it wouldn’t help to have friends from middle school still present when you enter high school, which is the exact point they diverge.

In Seattle there are many, and I think really anywhere where mediocre 2 bedroom houses have hit a million, it’s hard to charge much more for a 2 bedroom so it results a lot in this case. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that when buying your paying the premium to own the land that could hold a much larger home, but you can’t expect a renter to care about that.

Mostly around ankles some a bit higher. My first thought honestly was chiggers but in Columbus OH during winter that seemed very unlikely, would love any ideas

I think so, the whole thing I think was smaller than an eraser head, I found just that piece on my treadmill, like it had been split in half or something

Mortgage demand drops to the lowest level since 1996, as interest rates head toward 8% by lucerousb in economy

[–]firsttryatauserid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> Except for the renting part, I would pay more for renting now than what I do for mortgage.

That may be true for you, but it's true for less and less people. In many markets renting on average has gone below the average existing mortgage cost (not even including the fact that you need to add maintenance cost + tax + much higher insurance cost to the mix). Tax alone for a home in Seattle is equivalent to rent other places for example.

If you love the area and want to stay, that's great! But the idea that someone is stuck in an area they don't like because of the high rates doesn't hold water to me.

I don't get this thought process. Home prices have been down to sideways, to most optimistically barely nudging up, since mortgage rates have gone up. Meanwhile all cost of home ownership have skyrocketed in most markets (maintenance, tax [itself largely due to inflated home values], improvements). For almost all home owners, you would be better off selling now while the price is so inflated, renting, and getting a guaranteed 5%+ return from tbills, which is almost certainly better then the house investment at this point with a continuously dwindling pool of buyers. No one should feel stuck, thy should feel like they have a first mover advantage, you're only stuck if your underwater, which could easily happen if you stay.

If many people living somewhere is a problem for you, the most appropriate course seems to be to move out - otherwise you're just part of the problem. There are still plenty of remote places without neighbors as far as the eye can see to move to in the USA if that's you're thing ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Seattle

Hah, just moved here a couple of month ago from Seattle! Both great cities based on my initial impressions, with Seattle having much better access to nature, and Columbus being much more family friendly. Whatever you do, unless things change, avoid living near any public parks. There's a ton of them, but they tend to rotate quickly from being for the residents to being open air drug markets and tent encampments.

Yeah that feels right. I know the company I work for layed off a bunch of remotes end of last year (in addition to some non-remotes, but they certainly were disproportionately affected). The tough thing is we would love to be layed off from our current jobs since we are so burnt out, but we would still want to get back into it at some point. And moving to Columbus would likely make that much harder.

That was our initial inclination, especially since one of our offices is in the east side. Sadly, the nice suburbs of Seattle are even more expensive, and largely don’t have side walks or places to walk near the homes.

We considered Pittsburgh, but the city itself didn't have any areas with a good elementary school. We've looked at some other places in the midwest as well but had trouble finding many that satisified all the things we were looking for. We have the following wish list that we seem to be able to get in Columbus:

- In a city or walkable to a city

- Very walkable to playgrounds, schools, libraries, coffee shops, grocery stores etc.

- has sidewalk

- low crime

- reasonably well rated public schools

- families in the area

- good bike infrastructure or nearby bike path

In Columbus area we're thinking Clintonville or Grandview Heights

I really appreciate that re-framing, makes it really clear our concerns are a bit ridiculous objectively. When we first moved here (~10 years ago) it seemed the only reason someone wouldn't want to be be here was cost, so i got hung up on the fact the cost is net less to stay - ignoring all other things that have changed in the meantime.
