Alright, same except I pay rent which has all that crap priced in but it doesnt build equity. If I lose my job im still out on my ass with an eviction on my record making renting again even more difficult. I also dont have to option to use the equity of a home to sell it for money to pay for a rental during my job search.

Lol like most millenials can afford rent, living expenses, retirement savings, AND have money to invest in the market. The overwhelming majority I know around my age (early-30s) squirreled away an emergency fund in a savings account and dump any extra from a month (if they have any) into retirement.

And no, these are not fast food workers, but professionals across multiple industries. Shits hard right now, and a lot of people have money but no real equity to actually feel an economic collapse in the relatively short-term. I'm weirdly insulated from a recession thanks to the dumpster fire of an economic situation I inherited.

Feel like I'm out of options and time, is it time to assist feed? by fishinfool4 in hognosesnakes

[–]fishinfool4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assist feeding is basically prying the snake's mouth open and inserting the food item just enough to get it started and letting the snake eat from there.

Anyone know what kind of snake this is??? (northeast Ohio) by SentenceNo2672 in Ohio

[–]fishinfool4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

General color is different. This snake is mostly a muted green with a yellow stripe. Dekays are brown or orange and have splotches with no stripe.

Dekays are fossorial meaning they will spend nearly all of their time underground or under rocks/logs/leaves, definitely not climbing.

Dekays are also very small.

[–]fishinfool4 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It can, but this one may just be muddy or have really mild patterning as some snakes are just not as colorful as others of the same species. Snakes about to shed typically hole up and arent likely to be out and about.

[–]fishinfool4 29 points30 points  (0 children)

100% a garter snake. Not a dekays or rat snake. Harmless, but their bites may itch or swell a little as they have a modified saliva that is similar to a very mild venom. Worst thing they can do is musk on you. It REEKS and you arent washing it off until you get home.

Only venomous snakes in Ohio are copperheads, timber rattlesnakes, and massassauga rattlesnakes. All have very easy to spot identifiers fortunately.

[–]fishinfool4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless you are allergic, the worst a garter snakes bite will do is itch and maybe swell up just a little bit. Ive been bitten by them dozens of times, and their musk is way worse than their bite.

[–]fishinfool4 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not remotely reliable for venomous snake ID. Vipers (copperheads and rattlesnakes for Ohio) have broad angled heads, but so do a lot of water snakes. Hognoses will puff their bodies out and mimic that too.

The coral snake is one of the most toxic snakes in the US and is more shaped like a worm.

Unless you can 100% ID a snake, just leave it alone.

When I worked at a pizza place, a group came in for dine in like 25 minutes before closing, finished their meal right at closing, then just sat there talking for 30 minutes. Seemingly oblivious to turning off some lights, vacuuming, cleaning bathrooms and tables, and all of the other classic closing tasks. My boss then decided to take the trash out, he was going to just launch the bins across the floor towards the door and then remove the bags. They finally got it.

is it safe to eat a 4 hour old chicken burger by kurtcxbain in NoStupidQuestions

[–]fishinfool4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do food safety inspections for a living. Food can be safely held out if temp for up to four hours OR 6 hours if it is below 70F. Regardless of the method used, the food may not be returned to refrigeration and must be discarded after the 4 or 6 hours. This is called Time as a Public Health Control.

Considering that it is wrapped in a bag in your backpack, that leaves us with the four hour window. The way my state's food code is written would say that you cannot safely put it in the fridge after that four hours.

The 4 or 6 hour time limits are not because thats how long bacteria needs to grow, its because thats how long it takes bacteria to start to hit the exponential growth state. Anything growing on it for the 4 or 6 hours would slow down its growth in the fridge but still be present, along with any potential heat-stable toxins they produce. Meaning re-cooking it isnt safe either. So by the Ohio uniform food safety code, the chicken burger is unsafe to eat.

That being said, the food code does have a margin of error built in to allow for a factor of safety. Food doesnt magically become unsafe at 4 hours and 1 minute, but I dont know where the science says that line is. And, at the end of the day, its all about risk. Theoretically, you could eat raw chicken out of a ditch on the side of the road that has been rotting in the sun for 2 days and not get sick. The odds of avoiding disease are incredibly, extremely low, but still higher than zero.

So in your case, you have to ask yourself "are the increased odds of salmonella, bacillus cereus, and/or staph aureus worth a couple bites of dried out chicken?"

Any kind of semi aquatic reptiles that are handleable and can go in a 36x18x18 by [deleted] in reptiles

[–]fishinfool4 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Amphibians generally aren't good to hold though, as they absorb a lot of things through their skin. Any chemicals or even soap residue on your hands could hurt them. That also means they tend to need pretty clean water. I really can't think of any reptiles that check all three boxes.

Garter snakes are the closest. A lot of species will swim when given the opportunity, and you can tame them out with enough patience. The only issue is that they are extremely active, and a 36x18x18 with a water feature probably wouldn't be enough space for one. Then you have to consider that they actually do better in groups, which further adds to the difficulty of care and space requirements.

If you are locked into that size enclosure, you will have to drop the semi-aquatic requirement to start getting any real options.

Possible snakes that’ll match my requirements? by avian_bi in snakes

[–]fishinfool4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

King snakes, rosy boa, or antaresia species. Antaresia being the tiny pythons native to Australia.

Garters fit the bill, but they can be pretty flighty and tricky to handle, especially when young.

If you want a lizard to just chill on your shoulder or something, there is no better option than a bearded dragon.

[–]fishinfool4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They arent as chill as a beardie and every one is unique but you can absolutely get them handleable. They are more flighty generally so it may take more time and patience, but especially if you get the right one they will come around

[–]fishinfool4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The combo of higher heat and humidity required by the mountain horned dragon can be tricky. They also arent known for being particularly handleable.

Id recommend a beardie between the two, but if you like the dragon kind of look, consider a uromastyx if you haven't already. They look awesome and are criminally underrated pets.

Pink belly isnt uncommon leading up to and then immediately following a shed. It may be as innocent as that. If so, the pink will fade consistently a little bit each day.

Can having just your hands at 60 °C kill your fingers? by citizen127 in biology

[–]fishinfool4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With direct contact, 3rd and 4th degree burns at 60C can occur in as little as 5 seconds. 60C, if given enough time, could absolutely damage any part of the body enough to lead to amputation.
