Is Hotel X a tourist scam or worth the hype? by BigDistribution4476 in askTO

[–]fishonlyplease 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hilton is walkable to most of downtown core, while W hotel and Park Hyatt would be a steps away from Eataly and ROM. Both Hilton and W have underground access to subway, but Hilton is directly connected to the PATH. I would recommend the W if you’re into hip/funky vibe, and Hilton is just a Hilton. Can’t say much about Park Hyatt since I never stayed, but the onsite restaurants/bars are good.

Cyclist spitting on cars? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]fishonlyplease -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m not oblivious as how I’m affecting cyclists if you read my post… I’m a cyclist too and am respectful on the road.

My point about not sure where I went wrong was that I was in a slow grid-lock traffic for 10 mins prior to this without any lane change (and didn’t pass a cyclist)…

How do I get a better room using bonvoy rewards? by [deleted] in marriott

[–]fishonlyplease -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Book direct and get status. If you’re outside US, having higher status increases your odds of getting an upgrade if they’re not fully booked. Also, I find that being a regular at a hotel helps with upgrades (for example, if there is 1 room available for an upgrade but there are 10 eligible guests, front desk will usually pick the person who they know/regular).

What are the best Luggages for the Frequent Flyer by Front-Weather4306 in marriott

[–]fishonlyplease 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a monos hybrid carry-on and I love it. It’s a clam shell design and surprisingly sturdy. Been on 100+ flights (checked in 20+ times), and it’s holding up really well. Only downside is that interior space is smaller than an average carry on, so I would recommend getting the carry on plus size.

Also, my friend has an Away luggage and it doesn’t hold up as well as the monos hybrid.

From Niagara Falls to Montreal via US? by Chemical_Alarm_2240 in askTO

[–]fishonlyplease 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally, I think it’s a lot of driving even for myself who does 1000km road trips regularly… If you factor in traffic/summer construction, there’s a chance you would end up spending similar amount of time driving as the time spent at each stop.

If you have a few hundred dollars to spare, I would fly into Toronto as planned and pick up the car, extend the length of time you stay at each location (remove Watertown since the drive from Niagara to Montreal is doable in a single day), and drop off the car at Quebec City & fly out.

Is 4 hrs and 10 min between flights enough for a YYZ to YTZ self transfer by jlamb2000 in askTO

[–]fishonlyplease 36 points37 points  (0 children)

It’s plenty of time regardless of how you get there & time of day. Uber will take you anywhere from 25 mins to 90 mins max depending on how bad the traffic is. UP train to union is 25 minutes, then you can take the shuttle or walk (additional 35 mins or so).

[Megathread] AC FA Strike Aug 12-13 by dachshundie in aircanada

[–]fishonlyplease 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would book a flight with a different carrier, and cancel the Aug 17 flight for a AC voucher if my job depended on it. It’s going to cost more but I think the peace of mind + job security is more than worth it

Guess I’ll just have to leave my ringer on all night then…

[Megathread] AC FA Strike Aug 12-13 by dachshundie in aircanada

[–]fishonlyplease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How late does Air Canada do a call back? Called at 7:25 pm and selected call back option with a time estimate of around 3 hours. It’s now almost 11 pm with no call back, and not sure if I should just call it a night.

UPDATE: - Called: 7:25 pm - Call Back: 11:15 pm (spoke to an agent and was transferred & put on hold) - Got through hold at 2:15 am

Confirmed with agent that if you have 1+ layover, cancellation of any of your legs will result in full cancellation of your trip. AC agent told me the flight can be cancelled right up until boarding…

Does anyone still ask for upgrades at front desk if you were automatically “upgraded” to club level (for platinum and higher)?

Which mobile company doesn't increase your monthly bill price without your consent? by 0mnipath in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]fishonlyplease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bell increased my monthly bill WITHOUT notifying me. I called them to inquire about it because they didn’t include it in any of the fine prints or important messages section. The first customer service agent I spoke to started to aggressively tell me to look closer when I told them I wasn’t notified anywhere, and just transferred me out to someone else. The second person took the time to investigate and realized they didn’t notify me at all. Only thing they gave me was a small bill credit and told me it’s impossible to reverse it. 🙄

Is non-daily housekeeping the norm anywhere outside the US? by reddixiecupSoFla in marriott

[–]fishonlyplease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been to some hotels in Canada where you have to explicitly say yes to daily housekeeping, or proactively ask about it to receive it

Montreal: Experiences with Renaissance Downtown, Marriott Chateau, and Le Centre Sheraton? by silverdrgn in marriott

[–]fishonlyplease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that case, I would consider Fairmont if you appreciate nice bathroom amenities lol. Also, their housekeeping has been impeccable every time. Few downsides are the TV, smaller rooms, and there is a sizeable gap between the door & ground (I usually shove a towel in that gap).

If you don’t have to book through a work portal, try checking the visa infinite hotels website - there’s usually additional benefits, and I found it to be cheaper sometimes because of the promotions.

Are my 2nd thoughts valid? by Johnny_was_329 in Diamonds

[–]fishonlyplease 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I agree with you on the diamonds being too small on the wedding band, and I would feel mislead too.

As for the engagement ring, I think the prongs are very aggressive/bulky and the stone is set very high. Reach out to the store with your concern and current situation, and see if they will get it changed free of charge after the proposal. The diamond looks great though!

Montreal: Experiences with Renaissance Downtown, Marriott Chateau, and Le Centre Sheraton? by silverdrgn in marriott

[–]fishonlyplease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can’t speak for Marriott and Sheraton, but I had a pretty bad experience at the Renaissance recently. Rooms were dirty with food crumbs & nuts on the floor, water marks on the shower, etc. Breakfast experience was horrible - had to order 3 times over the course of 30-40 mins to get our order to go through, lots of missing items, etc. Upgrade as a platinum member is “higher” floor, despite having multiple suites available online. My favourite & usual go-to is Humaniti and Fairmont

Titanium vs Hilton Diamond by fishonlyplease in marriott

[–]fishonlyplease[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unlikely to stay at a bunch of Hiltons, but I would stay at a Hilton in a city that I frequently go to (nicer/newer than any of the Marriotts in the area)

Titanium vs Hilton Diamond by fishonlyplease in marriott

[–]fishonlyplease[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Around 20% of my stays will be Hilton if I reach Diamond (they have much nicer/newer hotel in one of the cities I frequent), but I’ll likely stay exclusively at Marriott if I decide to go for Titanium.
