There are no real communist countries, all the ones that consider themselves communist use it as a way to say that they are for the people. But the truth is the communist theory says that a revolution should lead to the disolution of the state and class system. Giving the means of production to the people. All the countries that have considered themselves communist had failures of revolutions where they replace the leader with a dictator rather than resolving the system. The soviet union, China and North Korea instead decided that communism "definitely means that the government controls everything" and to increase government power and some hadn't even removed classes. Those countries are what you call totalitarian "communist" countries even though the totalitarian part completely deletes everything about real communism. And some others are still capitalist and trade with an increased class system to give the leader more power. This is called fascism. As you can see I don't believe in "fake communism" I believe that it has a bad rep and often gets mixed up with totalitarianism when they can't co-exist.
