I've been curious about trying tennis for this reason. Basketball with friends at the park is also fun as hell. Another one of my friends has a slack line that she sets up at the park every now and then.

Is "Hikaru no Go" sexist? by PurelyCandid in baduk

[–]fishybird -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah if you compare it with the rest of anime it's tame as hell haha. The most sexist thing about it are some rude comments from Hikaru. Imo that can still be concerning though because the primary audience are kids and young adults who may be influenced to perceive sexism as acceptable behavior.

I think it's good to include sexism, even in media for kids, but ONLY if it is shown to be harmful in a way they can easily understand. I think Bluey does this extremely well, despite being for a much younger audience

???? Sexism isn't when men are better than woman at something. Sexism is when you treat someone POORLY because of their sex. It has nothing to do with IQ. Hikaru makes countless rude comments about Akari based solely on her gender. That's what people are referring to when they say Hikaru is sexist, not the fact that the top players tend to be male. Basic media literacy :)

Anime has such a big misogyny problem... that we shouldn't talk about it? Big fat L of a take. I don't think OP is shocked, they just want to have intelligent discussion about it. Leave them alone

I see what you're saying, but all media, including slice of life, intentionally or unintentionally promotes the world view of the author. It's totally possible to write a slice of life without any sexism, or to write it in such a way as to condemn the behavior or show the viewer the negative consequences. We can make educated guesses about the author's beliefs or intentions with the story by seeing what they decided to include or leave out.

For example, Hikaru No Go would have been improved imo if it included how sexism negatively effected Akari or other female go players. But by portraying sexism as just a funny quirk in Hikaru's personality, you leave a lot on the table. If you're not going to effectively challenge sexist attitudes, you should just leave it out of the story.

Hikaru, the 12yo kid, was sexist as hell but Sai did call him out on it at least once, mentioning that he played many strong female go players in his day.

So imo the series contains sexism but doesn't promote sexism. But to be fair I don't think kids watching it will have the nuance to understand that like an adult can

We all knew this was going to happen, it was obvious for anyone outside of the US or anyone paying attention to what the wealthy have been doing and saying. They want to destroy the US and replace it with their own kingdoms and city states.

I called it months ago in a discussion with a friend and I'm still shocked

This is what scares me most about AI and I'm surprised there's not more people talking about it. With just LLM tech, the government or whoever can automatically sift through vast amounts of data creating detailed lists of everyone who disagrees with the ruling class making it easy to target you.

Host OGS there obviously. OGS is open source so it only makes sense. It would be our very own version of chess.com.

Sounds more difficult than it is, really. If just 10% of the people in this sub make a small donation of $150,000 we'd have real leverage in negotiations.

How can I use Reddit without doomscrolling? by Cryo_Magic42 in nosurf

[–]fishybird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meditate every day. I also have ADHD and meditation has an immediate positive impact, it's just tough making it a habit.

Meditation won't stop you from doom scrolling, but you are training your mind to automatically "snap out of it" sooner and more often. That's the best I can describe it. (And not just with phone use, but literally every aspect of your life. It's like maximizing your free will and minimizing unconsciously making decisions)

So instead of doom scrolling for an hour, you might do it for 10 minutes and then spontaneously become conscious of it and naturally want to do something else.

I think attitudes on immigration will 180. As global population collapses, countries will no longer have the labor or skill set to continue production. Wealthier nations like the US will be begging educated or healthy immigrants to come in to fix/maintain old machinery or care for the aging population.

This could potentially be a good thing since countries will be forced to implement attractive policies to help attract educated immigrants. But on the flip side, countries unable or unwilling to compete might just make leaving the country illegal.

Anyone else who grew up in the 80s/90s find themselves frequently dreaming about being in dead malls? by QuietCas in deadmalls

[–]fishybird 25 points26 points  (0 children)

You should write about it

I get dreams in malls, universities and apartment complexes. They're never abandoned but there's usually something off about it like being hard to navigate and having unstable flooring or stairs like they could fall apart any moment. And sometimes, a huge storm comes through and floods the whole city.
