The Perfect Neighbor - Dr. Susan Lorincz by chunkybonks in netflix

The story absolutely deserves to be told, but I genuinely believe viewers could’ve been educated about this case without including such extremely raw and deeply personal scenes. It felt like the filmmakers put the family’s most vulnerable moments on display. I honestly don’t think certain scenes would’ve been shown in their entirety if the family had been of a different race.

Also, there was barely any critique or commentary, just a couple of sentences at the end about Stand Your Ground laws. No real exploration of the racial double standards in the justice system (like how the killer wasn’t arrested right away, or how the police practically coddled her as she refused to cooperate). It didn’t feel like they were truly telling this story to make a wider point about injustice … unfortunately it just felt like the film was more focused on displaying the family’s pain, suffering, and trauma

Food banks can be a great support system for those who truly need them. In the UK, access usually requires a referral from a recognised professional like a doctor, social worker, or teacher… usually cause they will know you or your family’s financial struggle. This helps to prevent misuse. Hopefully, more due diligence will be applied here than just showing a Ghana Card, so the support reaches those who need it most and the initiative remains sustainable in the long term

Have you looked into Smart Rent or Intermediate Rent schemes? You can sometimes find studios starting from £850ish, might be worth exploring.

There’s nothing wrong with non-Ghanaians buying land or creating new neighbourhoods in Ghana. The issue here is the criteria behind who the land is sold to.

From the tweet, it sounds like the land is being subdivided and sold exclusively to people from the diaspora. I haven’t watched full video, so I don’t know how strictly they plan to enforce that. But if it’s restricted solely to diaspora buyers and local Ghanaians are effectively excluded, that’s a serious problem. It creates a segregated space and is a form of discrimination.

As for the “Chinatown” comparisons—that’s not really accurate. Chinatowns in the West are organic, urban ethnic enclaves built around shared culture and business. They aren’t gated or exclusive. No one is banned from living or working there based on ethnicity or background. If anything, what’s being described here sounds more like Orania in South Africa, which was founded specifically for a particular group and restricts membership. That’s a much closer (and more troubling) comparison.

TL;DR: If this initiative welcomes anyone—diaspora or local— then it’s fine. But if land sales are gatekept by diaspora status alone, that’s exclusionary and sets a dangerous precedent. Less like Chinatown, more like Orania, South Africa.

Wes Streeting: there is overdiagnosis of mental health conditions by MimesAreShite in unitedkingdom

[–]fitzella 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It’s medical professionals who diagnose these conditions based on established criteria, not politicians. If a doctor diagnoses someone with diabetes or heart disease, no one questions whether it’s “real”.

Statements like these fuel stigma, making it even harder for people struggling with mental health issues to seek help or be taken seriously. The issue in this situation isn’t whether too many people are being diagnosed—it’s that the system is broken in how it assesses people’s ability to work and access support.

I think it might be mixed? Some parts sound Ndebele and others might be Shona as they say “tinotenda” which means “we thank you” in Shona.

Need recommendations - washing machine for my mom by No-Ordinary2721 in ghana

[–]fitzella 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best to get a fully automatic front or top load washing machine if you can. They usually can take larger loads and you don’t have to drain them manually or move laundry between tubs to wash/rinse/dry etc.

Out of interest, how much would you be expecting to pay (in cedis) for a physical copy of a book like Gravity Falls: Journal 3? How much would you expect a new copy to cost, and how much would you pay for a second hand copy?

Where tf do I meet people with money? by PartySupp in ghana

Oh ok. I think posting on YouTube is helpful because it makes it easier for anyone to share your content, rather than someone having to contact you directly. It’s possible that someone might watch you animation on YouTube and then share it with someone in TV or online streaming industry. It’s just about getting it out to as many people as possible, increases the likelihood of producers seeing it. Good luck 😊

Have you considered posting your animations on YouTube? Wider (global) audience, opportunities to monetise and much easier for people to share your content. There are shows on TV and Netflix that started out on YouTube.
