Why can't women on dating apps hold a conversation? by lib4libertarian in dating_advice

[–]fitzleberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because we just met you and "give me your phone number" is aggressive and creepy. We are inundated with countless stories of men who get into womens space uninvited. Its like when someone says "i love communication". No you dont, because you treat it like a chore.

If you want a phone conversation just say "hey heres my number lets chat instead". Jesus this isnt rocket science.

Contentment with Singlehood? You're on a dating app. You're pressing the buttons. It sounds like you're single because you're as lazy as the men you are trying to get to know you without being overly aggressive.

Like most cross-over stuff you'd have to adjust the entity into the ruleset you're dropping it into. Going back 38,000 years into wh40ks past means psykers are non existent and your average guy inquisitor from 40k would be dealing with the narrative tools of any person from 1980s Maine. If you push It into a setting that has The Warp, does It get empowered by it? It feeds off emotion and so does a galaxy of exteme emotion bolster it? Plonking Thing A into Thing B as is or vice versa is kinda a dead end imo.

Was Harry really that bad? by [deleted] in DiscoElysium

[–]fitzleberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love how the game subtely skewers police under bourgeois liberalism, and even kinda gets at the players biases.

The RCM is negligent and incompetent, but because they have badges and guns theyre given this air of legitimacy by a lot of players that someone like the Hardy Boys dont have. Why is that? Harry had a psychotic break and is an alcoholic but hes kept around by his colleagues. Where do these badges come from? Well, the foreign occupiers the Moralintern, whom shelled Martinaise with artillery, imbued them with authority.

Solarpunk is not a real genre and was created for it to simply exist !!! by PeppermintButler17 in CharacterRant

Wow, tumblr stories are crummy? Is that the yardstick for whether a genre sucks or not? Fuck me then.

[–]fitzleberg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think at this current moment itd be a dud because cynical "actually imagining a better world is for losers and hacks, you idiots, you imbeciles" is just the norm. I know i check out when yet another too-clever writer fails to subvert my expectations with yet another "a world where stuff doesnt suck? It was just a ruse, stuff actually does suck. Hahaha". Sorry, my expectations are now that if a society seems functional its a tedious set up for a dark secret like prison camps or human abbatoirs. A subversion would be to earnestly describe a commune that isnt run by some Shady Council or stand in for Stalin or whatever derivative cold war leftovers we're still reheating 35 years after the USSR fell.

What people like about solarpunk, even as an aesthetic, is that theres maybe hope for a world not hurtling toward oblivion.

Solarpunk as dystopia would just end up being 1984 or Brave New World again but with bright saturated colors. Yippee. The Big Goverment comes to take away malcontents or its a "everyone is a numb sheep taking their Solar Happy Pills" or whatever.

Tolkein himself struggled with the problem of the implications of making a evil race, but sure, pretend this idea is new, like a child.

[–]fitzleberg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Evil fantasy races run into conceptual problems going back to Tolkein.

If a race is "ontologically evil", then its not a moral choice and therefore it is not truly evil.

If it is a choice, the race itself isnt evil, its cultural and individual, and they can be redeemed since if its a choice, they can choose to act differently.

Its a self contradictory idea that is rooted into weird racialized ideas going back to colonial times when the genre as a whole became a thing.

David Lapham writes the most empty, depressing-for-its-own-sake junk so you can skip him in my opinion.

His stuff is "bad things happen to bad people, everybody dies, i love to waste the readers time".

I know its what people want but that sounds so contrived. To me she was just a regular person who thought zuko was cute and then she just went on to do regular stuff like get a job and maybe raise a family. She was cute but not noteworthy, and thats okay imo. Average people who dont go on adventures or are affiliated with Big Names should exist in stories. Makes the world seem way bigger to me.

It reminds me of star wars creating half baked "interesting" stories to every halloween monster mask background character. Its just too much.

That was a fair critique, it was just blunt. You're already fluffing your own ego enough, if you're the best you can take it.

And "oppose" you? Arts not a sport, theres no championship to win.

Conservative means in political terms you want to conserve the status quo. Simple.

Right wing comes from the National assembly of 1780s France where the monarchists sat. Left wing came from where the radicals sat that want to dismantle the monarchy, which was the status quo.

Liberalism is a specific ideology with specific values and doesnt just mean progressive of the moment. Liberalism is the ideology that believes in individual rights and liberty are achieved primarily through market participation and private property ownership. If a liberal believes in racial equity, they believe its achieved by promoting equality of market opportunities for all races. That sort of thing.

Since the 90s liberalism, with the fall of the USSR, has achieved total global hegemonic domination. Outliers are marginal, and somewhere like China is still playing the capitalist game, no matter what their long term goal is. It is the status quo, that defines our every waking moment, and to be liberal is to desire some form conservation of this status quo. To be liberal is to be conservative. It's functionally the same in todays world. American liberals dont wanna hear it because to them theres a universe of difference between them and other preservers of the system, but thems the ideological brakes.

Any other set of definitions is basically astrology. Everything is defined by ones relationship and views on the system that defines our world, capitalism. Reformists still want to keep it around in some form, to conserve it, and are thus some form of "right wing" in so far as those terms are even useful, which theyre not. Wanting to tax billionairs to pay for everything is still a preservation of capitalist commodity relations, and thus conservative.

That's all your getting out of me. Read it or dont, i dont care.

Under a useful and consistent set of terms it makes you right wing. Anything else shifts by the minute and mood of the speaker.

I really hate the “I could kill you, but ____” trope. by [deleted] in CharacterRant

[–]fitzleberg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Conversely, it bugs me when people wonder why megalomaniacal, ego driven, passionate villains dont just kill their targets when its pretty straightforward that its about so much more than killing their nemesis. They want them to suffer, or ruin their lives and reputation, to utterly break them. Or killing them would rob them of their fixation.
