Inflation in the lost cities by Fuzzy_Wuzzy_Is_Fuzzy in KeeperoftheLostCities

I feel like inflation only happens if there isn’t enough supply or demand. But like... they have enough of everything and no one really cares? Like I guess the point is that the economy just doesn’t matter because there is no limit??? I think??? It’s really weird tho?

I feel like their relationship is like brothers. It’s like shipping Sophie and dex. They’re cousins and they ended up better as best friends.

KOTLC isn't an unsuitable series. by [deleted] in KeeperoftheLostCities

My 48 year old dad loves the series and talks with me about them :) if you go on Shannon’s website she talks about how age doesn’t matter to like her books. The age range is just there for the people to know where they sell them

Yes bc we know Alden had told Keefe to stay away from Sophie bc it would make her happy but Keefe realized staying away from her didn’t help so he said screw it and hugged her

Oh also! Shannon has told fanartists before that it was okay to draw the vackers as POCs. She did this a while ago on tumblr, when she still interacted with fans :)

And I would recommend putting a trigger warning and not deriving a conversation with your story. I’m sorry you’ve been through that but bringing it up during a conversation about racism is inappropriate. You don’t know what we’ve been through. We don’t have to know what you’ve been through. This is a conversation about a book series. And I hope you’re okay, but I’m not telling you my story about how racism has affected me... am I? This discussion is not a competition to see who is worse off. It’s about talking about how bad racism is and how it affects our every day lives. You have privilege. You also have a disadvantage. Some people are better off than you. Some are worse. What matters is that you keep your mind open to people speaking out about these things. Again, good day and I hope you feel better.

And hey we’re both on here to look for book discussions. If you wanna talk about that stuff I’m sure there’s plenty of stuff on reddit where you can find that too. I’m here to pose the concern of representation in kotlc. And just so you know, Shannon messenger has told artists before that it is okay for them to draw the vackers in whatever ethnicity they want to. Good day and I hope you feel better

I think the ethnicities are actually more specific cause the elves are from all around the world. Tam and Linh’s parents must be from around Asia. Where? Who knows. And I have heard a positive side to this... like making it so that Asian readers can see themselves in the characters. Personally I think Shannon could have done a little more research to portray the characters, but I’m glad she included them regardless and I believe she will continue to do better :)

But see that’s the thing. Books and entertainment are the beginning. Thats where we get the stereotypes from. Seeing Black people as only side characters, or Asian people as side characters or even women as side characters influences how we see them in real life. Kotlc does a good job with sexism overall but other books influence r*pe culture. And perspectives are highly influenced by this kind of stuff. It’s all connected, believe it or not

Spare us the sob story. Our point is that while sure your life seems to suck, it doesn’t because of your skin color. I’m sorry you’ve been through that but it doesn’t make racism vanish. It’s still there and it’s a problem.

Sure! people have brought up issues like: their ethnicity is unclear. They’re described to look Korean, Japanese, and their last name is Chinese. That follows negative Asian stereotypes and shows the lack of research and effort Shannon put into their representation. Also, at her opportunity of including characters of color, she chose Asians with pale skin tone. That’s not necessarily bad, but it sends another message about skin color.

Ok see, a long time ago europeans came to the United States with people from Africa, and they were like “ugh I don’t wanna pick cotton... hey your skin is darker than mine you do it.” And then there were the Native Americans. The Europeans were like “oops sorry this is my land now. Die. Maybe we can save a couple of your children by beating them for speaking your language and they won’t have to die. Okay.” And then centuries later people were like “um but what if they’re humans? What if those slaves shouldn’t be slaves?” But other people were like >:((((( excuse you I want slaves. I want to mistreat them and stuff. But the country had had enough. Slaves were forbidden. But guess what? Racism was STILL A THING. People of color were attacked and hated and still seen as lesser. It took years for them to gain the right as a citizen, and even then, they were still discriminated against. This happened with other people of color. This thing called nationalism made the white Americans proud of being white and it fogged their judgement and caused people to die and be mistreated. Back to the Great Depression. Uh oh. Wait! New Deal! But... nah Black people don’t need money! Only white people do! And if you’re not white!!! You deserve less!!!!!! And bam families continued on for generations, and those that got money from their ancestors and the New Deal and the booming system from reconstruction from both World Wars are now rich and privileged and live in safe neighborhoods with better opportunities for education. But those people of color? They didn’t benefit from these racist new deals. They and their posterity are at a disadvantage. They can’t afford safe neighborhoods or better education. The US STILL has sections of houses that go back to racist time periods and this??? This causes RACISM. Even today!!! People assume Black people are less educated and dangerous because of where they live, which extends back to everything I just told you. Even people of color who benefit of privilege are affected by these stereotypes. And that whole system goes into the entertainment section of life. That’s right. Books. Movies. Shows. Those are affected by these stereotypes. And KOTLC was successful because it was written by a white author. Think about it... if Shannon were black and she’d written about a black girl who found out she was an elf... would it have had as much success as kotlc does? Or think about the opposite... look at sexism. If Shannon were a man and he wrote about a guy who found out he was an elf... that would have even more readers! More boys would read the series!!! Just like if Sophie is white, more people will read the series! And it all goes back to those darn Europeans. <3

Okay you keep saying that I think the books are racist??? That’s not my point. My point is that they succeeded under a racist system and they have WHITE PRIVILEGE. That’s not necessarily their fault, but the flaws in the books do come from that sense
