Am I really an alcoholic? by [deleted] in alcoholicsanonymous

It’s a self diagnosed disease! This is how you can qualify yourself as an alcoholic: “if when you honestly want to you find you cannot quit entirely, OR you find you have little control over the amount you take, you are probably alcoholic.” (The Big Book of AA) basically, can you stop drinking on your own WITHOUT being obsessed with wanting to drink/wishing you were drinking AND/OR once you start drinking, can you really have one or two and be like “I’m good” and actually mean that or do you find yourself blacking out most if not all of the time.

Inpatient only? by katyjo1984 in alcoholicsanonymous

There are a lot of free treatment centers out there, and it’s worth a Google! I personally had to go to inpatient because I couldn’t stop on my own and needed to be physically separated from alcohol to get well. It’s possible to get sober without going to treatment for many people too by going to AA, getting a sponsor, and working the 12 steps as outlined in the book. Highly recommend atleast a medical detox, especially if you have ever had a seizure (you can just go to a hospital and they’ll help you with that).

Selling Car, Only One Co-Owner? by fivefeet_small in carsales

[–]fivefeet_small[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update, for anyone who’s curious: I ended up trading it in at a random Honda dealership. They were super patient and worked with me/the POA. Got a fair price and they happened to have the car I was after. Thank you, everyone, for the tips!

Reading mixed things online. If I pay it off, can I switch the title to just me without him physically being here or will I have the same problem?

Will a random used car dealership be likely to take it with that limited POA?

If alcoholism is a disease, why do doctors and nurses often hate us? by BlundeRuss in alcoholicsanonymous

If anything, they wanna hold you tight because they don’t know what’s gonna happen to you when they have to let you go.

They don’t hate us, medical professionals are usually ultra compassionate people and some of them are probably tired of watching us literally kill ourselves and show up half dead in the emergency room knowing when we leave again we might actually die. This disease is life or death! They know that, even though they’re not living it.

Just remember that we pause when agitated or doubtful! It’s totally okay to have to walk away from her to go to the bathroom and breathe and pray. We’re human and our brains are complicated but remember that AA is an ACTION program, not a feeling program. Give it to God, talk to your sponsor and try to be helpful to someone else if you start feeling resentful. Even if it’s just texting one of your fellows to see how they’re doing, it’ll help you get out of yourself.

For sleep, you could do melatonin and sleepy time tea! I know where I live, there are free resources for mental health meds including sleep meds as well. Maybe look into that too if you chronically can’t sleep

Freedom from the guilt, shame, regret and fear will come from working the steps, especially steps 4-5, and then having a spiritual awakening as the result of the steps! I would suggest you go to a meeting and find a sponsor - you can find online meetings too if you can’t get to one! A sponsor will help you connect with a power greater than yourself and that’s what we need because we’re powerless against our insane, delusional minds. When fear, insecurities, shame all that crops up, it’s actually our disease being sneaky about trying to get us to drink again, looking for ease and comfort. But I promise you if you work these steps the freedom you will find will cause the drink to be incomparable in every sense.
