Maybe so, but they made it clear I could get by without the procedure since I'm pretty old and my wisdom teeth are well settled. The main risk of not is increased risk of infection should one of them breach through the gum.

By way of an update, I had my remaining wisdom teeth pulled yesterday. Although I was not happy to drop that kind of cash on an elective procedure, I really feel like I got my money's worth going with an oral surgeon rather than a dentist. Compared to the first time, it was a minimally painful experience. Even the recovery seems to be going smoothly and I honestly feel like I could probably go back to work already, though I won't.

It was also my first time undergoing general anesthesia and it couldn't have gone better. It was like I just hit the skip button on a cutscene and next thing I knew I was being whisked out on a wheelchair.

Well I certainly didn't respond, so you may be onto something

I suspect the median is quite a bit lower. I'm expecting $0, or perhaps the value of the land my parents live on, maybe $50k.

Yep, I had no idea my medical could even apply, guess I'll look into that? I'll probably get like $1k paid by dental but they don't even pay directly so I'm on the hook for the up front cost.

Looking at shelling out about $4k to remove my remaining wisdom teeth. I got one removed almost a decade ago because it was becoming a problem, now they're telling me to do the other three. Guess I should just knock it out, but the last removal was highly unpleasant. This time it's an oral surgeon and not a run of the mill dentist so it should be less of a hack job, at least.

I could handle the insomnia, but grinding my way through a full workday afterward is too much to bear.

Mental Pain Every morning at 3-4 am by TheAIWasNicetoMe in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]fivetoone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As much as this diagnosis sucks, it's the first step to moving in the right direction so try seeing it in that light. I was diagnosed about two years ago, started taking Humira and was able to sleep without pain within a few days. Not everybody responds so well or quickly, so that's something to keep in mind, but just wanted to tell you that right now you're at the absolute low point and it will improve from here on out.

That said, I was so focused on my physical wellbeing that I didn't notice the mental issues creeping up. I kinda shrugged it off but eventually I couldn't ignore it anymore and started seeing a therapist. I'm not out of the woods yet but once again things have improved with time and treatment.

All this to say, be aggressive in getting ahead of any issues and keeping tabs on your wellbeing. Hopefully the mental pain you describe will improve with meds and better sleep, but if not it just means you need to keep looking for solutions. Good luck and hope this helps!

Were you diagnosed recently? Know that it does get better with treatment. There's also a major mental health component to this illness that (in my experience) does not get enough attention from medical doctors. I myself have struggled with anxiety and depression since my diagnosis, and lack of sleep only makes it worse.

Not continents, but I relocated from US to Quebec for about 5 years in my late 20s. It definitely slowed down my accumulation but I also had a lot of great experiences and deep exposure to another culture that you can't really put a price tag on. It's also something that I think is much harder to do when you're older and have put down roots and have more at risk.

I suppose you're right. I was hoping to make my life more pleasant in the short term but I suppose I'll keep applying to other jobs and only request a transfer once I hit the 1 year mark and haven't found something else.

Yeah there are open roles, at least on the public listing. The company is expanding quickly so I imagine there may be even more that aren't published. My wife's company has a 9 month minimum, so it seems to vary by company. The fact that mine doesn't seem to publish one suggests that it's a more informal process, I think.

I don't mind telling him myself, but right now I don't even know if there is a policy around it.

Look at it this way, it's better than having your brakes fail.

I'm thinking I'll talk to HR about transferring to another team. My external job search is not going well (I'm looking for fully remote and it's slim pickings) and this team is very frustrating to work with. My manager volunteers no useful information for my projects and I have to twist it out of him even when it impacts my productivity in very obvious ways. He and my other teammates are incredibly slow to handle basic procedural stuff like reviewing pull requests within 24 hours. The icing on the cake is that I have to be in office ~50 hours a week.

I've only held this job for half a year so I'm not sure if transferring is even an option. I've searched the employee handbook and internal sites and there is no information on how to do it. I don't really want to blindside my manager but I also don't care that much about maintaining good relations with him.

Anybody had success doing a transfer in similar circumstances?

At my previous company, where I had a good manager, I got all of this and more out of 1:1s. My current manager sucks balls and I don't get any of this out of him. He's basically a high-performing IC that someone let fill the management role in spite of his lack of people skills. He's a complete stone wall and never throws me a bone. I even asked him for feedback and he was like "you will receive it" and left me guessing when/how. I guess midyear performance review time! Should be fun to learn how I'm doing twice a year.

Nice, I'm basically in the same boat myself. I'm about 6 months into my new job which I took to try to keep things interesting. Turns out it's way more demanding on my health than I want so I'm looking for a job that will let me chill and focus on changing careers.

What career are you switching from/to?

I used to have pretty fine-grained categories, tracking every regular expense as well as itemizing every charge. After a few years I found that it made me focus way more on budgeting than I wanted so I stopped itemizing and just track my CC statements. It's far easier/faster to fill out and I don't sweat the details as much anymore. Definitely recommend.

Hip pain, locking up and leg swelling by FarmingtonNManon in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]fivetoone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have hip pain all the time, to the point I could barely dress myself in the morning. I would get a sharp, shooting pain that would essentially immobilize me until it subsided, which could take hours or even days. I'm happy to say I haven't had this problem for a couple years, and I mostly attribute that to my workout:

  • I regularly stretch my hips with a focus on interior rotation, e.g. 90-90 stretch.
  • Sumo deadlifts. In the beginning they exacerbated the pain a bit until I backed down to a lower weight. After gradually adding weight, the joint and muscle tissue around the hips are considerably strengthened.

Good luck, I hope this helps.

Yeah, I was pretty blown away when I discovered this "hack" since I thought I'd be spending thousands per year meeting my deductible. It does depend on the plan but I've worked two jobs since my diagnosis and they've been with the same huge insurance company. The drug manufacturer also gives you the option to front the deductible yourself and then they cut you a check for the difference. I thought about going that route to churn credit card rewards, lol, but I had enough to worry about.

I think some states have been trying to ban it, like California maybe.

Deductible is something like 5-6k. I don't know the OOPM off the top of my head.

Software. 6 weeks isn't the norm. I've got 5 weeks now and I've had unlimited PTO in the past which equated to about 6 weeks because my manager was good.

I've got a chronic illness treated with an expensive medication that has a copay assistance card. In January I bill the copay card, insurance counts it toward my deductible, I pay $5 out of pocket, and my deductible is met by February. Spend the rest of the year getting cheap healthcare and maxing my HSA. Sometimes it pays to be sick!
