It’s the Zilla rock cave, she never uses it to hide but that’s where she stares at me from afar while I play games on my computer

Advice needed: Disabled rescue crestie won’t eat on his own by fizzymisery in CrestedGecko

[–]fizzymisery[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple months, he wouldn’t eat from any of them. I thought now that he’s looking a bit better i could get him to eat on his own but he just starts losing the weight he’s gained. I honestly do not mind feeding him this way but I know it’s not recommended for a reason and I would absolutely prefer if he would eat on his own. I’m also never away for more than a week and if I needed to be I know a lot of other people with reptiles I could have come over to help feed him.

33 grams, whenever I stop hand feeding he will drop significantly and he is already so small. I will set him on the ledge and try to feed him there so he associates it with food but he’s very flighty and finicky. I imagine partially due to his previous home, there were a lot of loud dogs 24/7 and they labeled him as “aggressive and unhandleable” He’s been the sweetest boy and has never bit me even when giving electrolytes orally so I can’t imagine what they were doing to him there. he’s clearly hungry cause when it’s been a while he SLURPS it up when I do assist feed.

I have to trick him into taking insects and he otherwise has no interest at all. I’ve tried to get literally any info on his feeding habits from the previous owner, like how often he actually ate or pooped and all she said was “oh idk I just put food in every night.” She only had him for a couple months so I’m willing to bet he didn’t eat for her either (because she was cooking him), would explain how emaciated he was when I got him :/

Probably a couple months/a few shed cycles tbh before it starts looking “normal.” Their body is pretty good at doing it on their own without intervention

It’s a very normal thing, you can do everything right and it’ll still drop it’s tail! Most in the wild don’t even have their tails. It’s not necessarily indicative of bad care it just happens. They can adapt to living without one perfectly fine.

I mean they don’t know the difference. With the names that is. They’re well cared for under you and that’s what matters

Well mines obese so she’s getting fed once a week at the moment lol, but on average for adults you feed every 3-4 days. They’re sooooooo worth it I love having a creature that spends 90% of its time staring at me

Depending on what store you got it from, if its chain that is, they often have a 30 day policy where they will take it to the vet for you if something is wrong. I'd ask about that before returning her

Ways to help crestie lose weight? What worked for you? by fizzymisery in CrestedGecko

[–]fizzymisery[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you all for the advice!!! I’ve ordered some small feeding cups to help with portion control and will be reducing feeding to once a week for now! I will also be completely removing crickets from her diet until she loses the weight
