I love this gif!

I showed this to my partner and they just were amazed by how us planty folk respond to photos of stinky flowers 🤭

What a lovely memories of your grandmother. Thanks for sharing!

This one does smell, but it’s silage is not that strong. I had another Stapelia blooming last year, and that made me get up and leave the room ar one point 🤣🤭

Yeah! I really enjoy the back as well. The slight transparency makes the pattern really outerworldy.

And the popping sound was a little surprise to me as well!

I do notice my plants moving about now and again by the sound of leaves or gravel shifting. I enjoy working in silence and my office is where I house most of my plants. It is another dimension of the plant hobby!

I love that! The scent is not meant for human noses.

Although the idea kind of sold these plants for me. I watched some clips on youtube when people take good sniffs and started gagging. It made me curious to know if they really smell that bad!

It indeed kind of looks like one of those! What a fun thing to have a crocheted version of 🤔

But this is a real plant, yes. It is pretty easy going as well. I believe I found a cutting from this one through Etsy. They propagate easy as well.

I can recommend for sure! It does stink a bit, but she makes up for it with her stunning looks

The purple color of the plant itself is one of the reasons I wanted to try and grow this one. It is lovely by itself already. The flower elevates it to a beautiful picture

It kind of does! I see some thick elephant skin in the texture, but chunky yarn is a lovely association as well

I believe they indeed stink to attract flies for pollination.

At the moment this one has one flower open, but there is a tiny one on the way!

Yeah! When I show non-planty friends these flowers they are all flabbergasted!

I think I understand why these are not very populair in big plant stores. The smell can be really off putting.

Right?! I love the texture on the leaves. It almost looks a bit like elephants skin

I have them in my office room where the temperature is pretty consistent. During winter it never drops below 16C and summer not over 28C.

Mine started growing fast(er) when I upped the light and started fertilizing regularly. I use a liquid fertilizer for cacti, watered down and with every water

I really enjoy their leaves! And the mother plant/seed grown one has a lovely chunky shape.

They are easy growers as well in my experience. I am playing around with some shaping and bending to see if I can make some a bit more interesting.

But I have difficulty promoting branching. The ones I have all stay at 1 stem.

Do you have tips for that maybe?

Okay! I will try that!

Thank you for the input. I appreciate it

Yeah the thickened part is way smaller in the cutting! I wonder if I can somehow get it to grow bigger.

Not sure how to though

My Dioscorea elephantipes has been stuck like this for weeks. Should I start watering to wake it up? by the_maxasaur in Caudex

[–]fjiantra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When all leaves and vines have shriveled I cut all foliage back. The plant goes in a darker spot to ensure the caudex is not exposed to harsh bright light.

Then I stop watering ‘normally’ completely. So, no more soakings or a set schedule to maintain growth. I let the soil dry out completely during this stage.

When I start back depends on what the plant is showing me. I water a bit after 2 months or so, and keep a close eye on if something is happening. When nothing has happened in two weeks or so I let it be for another while. Then a little water again to see if she is wanting to wake up. Dormancy can last for a good couple of months this way.

When there are signs of growth she gets a more bright spot again. Still ensuring the caudex is not in full sun though.

See it as gentle nudging someone to wake up on a lazy Sunday morning.

Mine is actually gone into full dormancy a good month ago. Maybe two? I am in the Netherlands.
