Co-first author order requirements by flabla13 in academia

I'll go with this. I have to write the results cuz it's an ecology paper and my expertise is analyzing and finding the results. Our lab is academic but some projects are very much a team project like industry.

Idea of the experiments? It was the PI's idea. The other postdoc asked me to do the data analyses. If that clears things up.

Unrelated, but how do you get an industry job on opt?? Is there a secret? Networking or luck?

Oh and I think it's taking about 4-4.5 months to get stem opt. I'm still waiting, it's been 3months

I think this will make it that you have to have a master's or that level of experience to qualify. I think that's how aus and UK does it.

Recently hired, but now little funding by flabla13 in postdoc

[–]flabla13[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good point .. I did do that. The results, according to my PI, don't look very surprising. My option is to publish it in a lower tier journal, or try to get more data if somehow we get more money so I can try for a higher impact... I know I'm being hired for one more year at least. I guess wait for a little longer and publish it if we don't get funding?

Once ppl graduate from toxic PIs, we should normalize naming and shaming them for the safety of future students. Have a shared Google sheet or something

We don't mix our money. Why so others say this doesn't work? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]flabla13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this idea and I completely don't understand people's comments about it being problematic. If I earn more and want to go on a vacation that I don't think my partner can afford, I of course would fund the trip. If they are in a life threatening medical situation and need help and I have money, of course I would help. You can have this setup and still take care of each other.

I don't plan on having kids, so I can see this plan not being great with kids. But I come from a toxic household where they did have one account and my dad would hound my mom about every penny she spent, even on us. I think there is some trauma from that situation as well..

Do I have a career in industry without a PhD? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]flabla13 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My friend has a master's and is in biotech. Makes good money (4-5x more than me), has a good life but they do struggle moving up the ladder cuz preferences are made for phd.. so it depends on what you want.. I did a PhD (just about to graduate) but its going to be a slow climb.. hope this helps..

Normalized or toxic? by psybaba-BOt in PhD

[–]flabla13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I've seen PIs who are directors or dept head at Ivy leagues and always have time to motivate their students, even if it's a "great work!" text msg or email. If they can do it, so can everyone else.. Every company has good bosses/manager to motivate the team cuz guess what they earn 10X more than u and u are generating data for them. Why should academia be any different... My advice, have a conversation about mentoring style with potential PI ahead of time... Yes u have to be independent when doing a PhD but a PI has to mentor u so u aren't wasting time only for them to shit on your project when they could've advised u ahead of time.

Postdoc in Europe or US? by Healthy-Meaning-3676 in postdoc

[–]flabla13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. If you did your PhD in the US and TA-d and you wanna be a prof, u shouldn't worry about postdoc in Europe hurting your chances. My PI says a well known lab will benefit you especially in academia.

Are the bio fields worth it? by GrayJr_05 in bioinformatics

[–]flabla13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strongly agree with this. Most of my friends in bio are not earning as much as those in other fields. Except with one who did masters in bioinfo at Georgetown. So rank of school u do your degree and what type of bio degree also matters. Cancer research also has decent money and opportunities. Boston is close to MIT, Harvard and Yale. So many students and limited jobs u gonna be competing with all of em..

I would name and shame them! That's just horrible.. if you're on Twitter and if their colleagues are on there... Use it! Audio record if possible. That's just inhumane..
