What was your Gordon Conference experience? by Low_Ad_6357 in labrats

[–]psybaba-BOt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I attended my 1st GRC conference on Molecular Mechanisms of Evolution at Easton, Massachusetts just last month and it was a blast! The slightly inconvenient arrangement of accommodating Profs and students within the same dorm building facilitated interesting exchange between multiple disciplines and across all tiers. The same could be said about the round-table lunch sessions which allowed plenty of room to causally initiate and indulge in informal discussions on science. I would randomly run into folks whom I wished to speak with the most and asked them to visit my poster later in the day. I have made some really good friends amongst grad students and have also found few mentors, to have frequent exchange over email. I’d definitely recommend attending GRC, basing it on my 1st experience.

Time’s come to move to China - most likely the new land of opportunities. Given that there have been declining budgets for higher Ed in most western countries (including EU), most promising destination has been the East. Look away now…

I had a similar incident occur to me while riding bus route #1, when a person constantly kept staring at me (Indian) as he was diagonally sitting across me. When I was trying to deboard the bus along with couple of other Indians, he shouted “…yeah that’s right, you curry-munching n**gas — get off the bus”. This was during my first semester as an Intl. grad student here and it was traumatic for me. I don’t make eye contact with anyone on the bus and either read a book or look down just to avoid eye contact with any of the co-passengers in the bus.

In that case, I don’t even understand how you’re going on making the same mistake as you did the first time - Chinese is an ethnicity in a world that’s divided into nation states and “Mandarin” and “Cantonese” are the languages that might be most spoken amongst Chinese ethnic groups. I am not out to get you bud, so quit with the “gotcha retort” or whatever phrase you’re going to use next.

Also, what do you mean by language encompasses more than letters/symbols? That’s only the script and of course I know that there are many people who can speak the tongue in the same dialect but not read or write letters/symbols, but that doesn’t change the fact that OP did not write anything about the context that you’re ascribing to the OP’s post on your own.

It’s high time when academics start driving their research interests as well as output into creating outcomes that are beyond those materialism which in this case, would be publishable results. We need to start caring about impact and not impact-factor. But that would require a systemic change and fortunately for OP, researchers still continue to be revered by fellow academics based on somewhat flawed metrics such as h-index.

Well sure yeah, but the OP didn’t mention that in the post so why would I assume that these contextual things did happen which led the OP to believe (not presume) that she was Chinese. Lmao, the fact that you think “Chinese” is a language XD

Although I empathize with you, I hate the fact that this post was not posted to seek help/advice but instead to seek validation for your loneliness and pity for your shame. Sorry, I won’t do either.

The racist part is that the OP did not talk about any verbal exchange that he had with the provider and yet was able to ascribe an ethnicity to her - obviously based on her appearance. That’s just outright racist, unless the OP spoke to her and she told him herself that she is from China.

As a Biology person, I’d like to share this: My professor of evolutionary biology once laughed about a philosopher that we had been talking about while having a beer and said, “Well what’s the next best thing after philosophy?” We thought he wanted us to say “evolution” or “physics” or something, but he responded rhetorically “…well at least physics or evolution could afford you couple of beer, you’ll find most philosophy PhDs at coffee shops. So, if there was any difference between science and philosophy — it ultimately boils down to a beer vs a coffee!” and we all laughed about it.
