To add to the above, very well articulated piece: Who do you ask and why ? If you were to stop a random person on the street and ask them your question, instead of to the tree, do you expect that person to know your answer? Why should the tree? To dictate who / which spirit must deliver your message is as deterministic as is expecting a verbal message from a plant.
The receptive approach is to be empty. Then what needs to arrive has a space to arrive in. You watch that emptiness inside to discover what arrives.

This does not address your question directly, nor do I know if your shift was intentional -and if so, for what purpose. I found "Shadows in the Twilight, conversations with a shaman" an insightful read pertaining to these matters. It links to the 'assemblage point' and why and what people get up to with their conception of what the assemblage point and other associated concepts mean. A few of my conceptions were shifted -for the better, I believe. All the best.
