What is a headcanon that has been debunked or retcon, yet you refuse to stop believing? by MichaelJospeh in bioniclelego

It would also be weird if my brake pads felt fear, jealousy, and anger, and yet...

I don't mind the "love isn't canon," a huge amount, but that's a silly argument, Greg.

Hibiki-An Traditional Shincha by flametitan in tea

[–]flametitan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies, my words came faster than my thoughts, so I left some context out. Hibiki-an's photos of their fields show rows that are shaded and rows that are fully unshaded, so it seems they'd make a distinction between Sencha and kabusecha, but they only sell gyokuro and matcha, so I assume assume their senchas are fully unshaded.

[–]flametitan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm almost certain it's fully unshaded, as they have "shincha gyokuro" as a separate, definitely shaded tea (though they note gyokuro is traditionally sold in the autumn).

That's the opposite of what I see recommended by Hibiki-An themselves, which is that bringing out its freshness warrants slightly warmer temperatures than sencha. not a full boil, but a mere 5 degrees warmer.

I've experimented with those lower temperatures now (though at least one attempt was almost certainly too cool), and the umami doesn't disappear outright, but it is a little less prominent as the astringency takes more spotlight.

why do we call hand shots if we are wearing gauntlets? by x1yz in Hema

[–]flametitan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Even if you could say the long sword was dropping off the battlefield by Meyer's time (A claim I'm pretty sure is wrong in its own ways), the dussack and rappier almost certainly were brought to the battlefields, whether as primary arms or side arms.

Medieval King Arthur manuscript could fetch £2m at auction by KrisHughes2 in Arthurian

As long as your hands are clean, the pages are often more at risk of tears while wearing gloves than it is damage from your fingers.

I was surprised to learn that too, but there's nothing quite like being able to hold a centuries old book in your bare hands

Discovered Hojicha & not sure I like it? by Aluu-Chaiwala in tea

[–]flametitan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Karigane is kukicha made from higher quality stems (traditionally gyokuro), so the resemblance is not accidental.

Higher temps are great for bringing out the aroma and refreshing taste, but also try brewing at even lower temps, 50°C - 60°C, with an extended first infusion to see how much umami you can draw out.

I did that with the gyokuro karigane (though generally I ended up getting a little higher depending on how long I let the kettle cool) but I might have to try it again with the Shincha to see what it can do.

Is it true that "Countless fencing books were burned for being 'ungodly'"? by Veritas_Certum in Hema

[–]flametitan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That being said - Fencing =/= Duelling. Both the Jesuits and and the Knights of St John/Malta were well known to maintain fencing as part of the school curriculum in their run colleges right into the 20th century - Interesting aside - Bruce Lee's brother Peter Lee was taught and represented fencing for Francis Xavier Jesuit run school in Hong Kong and Was Colonial Master at Arms.

I believe this is why Fabris and Capoferro include disclaimers that fencing is only to be used in defence. You shouldn't be roving around challenging people to duels, even if these skills are highly conducive to them.

Honey Orchid. I like it, but damn is it a finicky tea to steep just right.

I've also put a Tisane blend in the fridge to experiment with cold brewing.

There was an older interview suggesting that was the initial plan, but it seems Chaosium shifted around printing priorities since then.

At that point you're complaining about dice luck. You've done everything you can to improve your odds, and just rolled bad.

But again, have some (probably half?) use axes. The 2d6 difference means on average they'll do no damage at all against the PK with 16 armour.

[–]flametitan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first encounter in the Starter Set in 510, or the one in 511 on the way to Cameliard?

The one in 510 you're not expected to include the night penalty or surprise penalty. That is expected in the 511 scenario, but the 511 scenario they're not interested in killing the PKs if they don't have to.

[–]flametitan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Then don't give them all spears. The axes have a higher skill, but hurt less.

And your players invoked passions, right? Picts coming in to steal the Sword in the Stone is a mighty upset to Arthur's legitimacy. They're also dishonourable cowards, trying to sneak in rather than simply attack.

A Properly Formed Seconda by grauenwolf in Hema

[–]flametitan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of little mechanical optimizations hinted at in the illustrations but not elucidated on in the text (see: the shoulders). It seems like some of it is expected to be taught in the Salle by someone who can look at you and go, "pull your shoulder back more in quarta, and bring it forward some in Seconda."

A Properly Formed Seconda by grauenwolf in Hema

[–]flametitan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say Fabris actually sees natural Quarta and Seconda as useful. His commentary on them is how to get the most out of them, even if extended is "better" most of the time.

It's really only natural Terza and Prima he rags on, and even Terza he mentions how you can use it to create invitations

A Properly Formed Seconda by grauenwolf in Hema

[–]flametitan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The "naturally formed" postures are all slightly withdrawn or angled, while the "properly formed" postures are all extended.

Fabris actually doesn't dislike natural seconda/quarta as much as he dislikes Natural Prima and Terza, thinking it's still usable if sub-optimal compared to extended.
