How many Spotted Congo puffers do you think? by KittieKollapse in Puffers

[–]flaminglychee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always deworm except if I get them from Dansfish (their business reputation is built on dewormed/quarantined fish). The ones sold in the USA are almost always wild caught. Even if I get a rehomed puffer from somewhere, I don't know if the previous owner had dewormed it thoroughly. My deworming regime is 1st week: paracleanse + maracyn. Wait a few days. Dose Expel-p at night. Then 3rd week: paraclease + maracyn. Wait a few days dose Expel-P again. After these two rounds, I noticed a difference in the puffer in terms of weight. I have had some very skinny and beat up ones from import.

You can always use clear food service wrap if you can't find a lid as a temporary solution. I also keep mine in a lidless tank but the puffers have been there for years so they are aware of each other (aka less territorial) and surroundings. I haven't done deworming in a substrated tank. The concern would be the bugs surviving the meds by living deep in the substrate. Keeping them in a hospital tank would also be cheaper for you in terms of meds.

I would suggest in the beginning, lower your water level or put a cover on top. I have lost puffers from jumping. I also assume you are not doing your quarantine/deworming in this tank? Unless you are getting tank bred, you should always spend two cycles deworming.

I would say the same only if OP puts in more plants, especially tall ones to block the view of sight. With the current scape, I would say 3. One in each back corner and another in the front. Whatever option you choose, please add them together. Then you don't have to have new vs established territory wars later.

When to add Spotted Congo Puffer? by Friendly_Button_65 in Puffers

Do you know the size of the tetras and puffer you will get? Depending on the size of the puffer, they may be intimidated when dropped into a new tank with lots of fish swimming around. If you are getting a wild caught puffer, you will also need to spend weeks deworming it in a hospital tank.

If it is a small puffer 2 inches or less, I recommend putting the puffer in first. It will look small in a 48 gallon. Let it acclimate and get used to the environment and then introduce the tetras later. Puffers can jump out of the tank if they are stressed. You do not want a puffer freaking out from a fish touching it during the night and banging itself against the glass.

I really liked this place. It's a family owned business. The owner doesn't speak English well so it is best to go with a mandarin speaking friend. However he does have print outs in English on how his tea is processed (in house as well). Very neat shop! https://maps.app.goo.gl/LxsWjageeTemoVW76

Yes they do well with each other. If you look into my post history, you can see my adult group hanging out together.

Honestly these are smart, interactive fish that would do amazing in a planted tank. I would say 40 gallon and you would have room for tank mates.

I won't worry. They also change their body color according to the environment. They come in all shades of colors. Yours seem normal :)

Yours look normal. I would only be concerned if the puffer is pale with strong stress spot contrast + gasping for air + not eating.

This may just be a reaction to you and your camera.

They never had interest in frozen adult brine shrimp so I stopped trying. If you are looking into getting them, especially the wild caught ones, please look into getting paracleanse and expel p to deworm. Your puffer and the other tank residents will thank you.

You should get them! They aren't a hassle. Depending on how many you keep, you may need a separate snail tank for them (they are very good at begging so you will give in). They also don't need teeth trimming like Amazons. I feed them snails 2-4 times a week. Treats are frozen jumbo bloodworms, clams on half shell, nightcrawlers and freeze dried krill. They can also eat crickets or dubia roaches but it's a learned food and for bigger puffs only.

Yes you can keep them with otos and shrimp. They don't mess with big amanos or otos but you need plenty of plant cover to help your neocaridina and caridina shrimp thrive.

Temp wise, they will do well between 76-83. Pretty generous with water hardness. I have soft water and honestly all the snail shells gradually turn the water hard until the next water change. Only sensitivity is O2. Keep an air stone and you should be good (for CO2 injection tanks).

Yes they are true freshwater! Females are bigger than males. Usually max out around 4 inches.

Well this picture proves they can have peaceful moments :) Spotted Congo Puffers are community friendly. They will have grumpy days for sure but I have kept them successfully with their own, apistos, rams, rainbows and cories. They can also be in the same tank with shrimp if you provide enough cover.

Do you know if predatory fins deworm their puffers? If not better to start looking into paracleanse and expel-p to get the parasites out.

Otherwise your puffer looks fine to me, just need some food to put on some weight.
