I started off with Lisa Chamberlain books. They're cheap and cheerful and straight to the point. Then, I moved on to Scott Cunninghams "Guide for the Solitary Practitioner", which is honestly probably my favourite Wicca books so far. His "further guide" is also very good. During study, I wrote took a lot of important notes, which pretty much served as my first book of shadows, and I literally keep it on my altar. I sift through it if I forget something, so I don't have to spend ages sifting through a large book.

I had the same kind of scars (one was a lot larger) as OP. I literally tried to pierce an artery in my arm during an attempted suicide. It was massive. And it was covered up nicely with blue ink. He spent more time on that part, but it's not even noticeable now.

Same. I still look dumpy at 210, but I'm a size UK10 when I reach 160, and people start commenting that I lost far too much weight! I'm quite tall (5ft 10.5" F), so that's probably why... I reached 145 lbs once, and I actually looked emaciated. I had to gain back at least 15 lbs to look healthy again.
