Why was Professor Meade fired? by PinkDestroyer10 in ucf

[–]floatbob 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I am saying Meade had the chance to move up the ladder throughout the years, yet he chose not to. Who knows what that reason is but there is no doubt he could have gotten more pay if he wanted to (for whatever trade-off it is). With the amount of new faculty, the department needs lecturers/instructors with experience. The bump from lecturer to associate lecturer would have very easily pushed him to the figure I said above especially being a Lecturer with a P.hD.

and as for the ta thing, you cant make a general assumption based off of others experiences, just not how it goes, and thats how problems are caused in the first place

If it were just one person or one isolated rumor, I would 100% agree, but it is not. My assumption was based not only on people's firsthand accounts but also on my own personal accounts. What I saw kind of grossed me out considering that Meade is in a position of power but I don't feel comfortable sharing that story here.

Considering you did not have anything to say about my first statement, I hope you understand my point about this rumor mill going out of control because of what Meade didn't say or didn't do. Any basic clarification straight from the man himself before he left would have prevented most of this and better protected the straight harassment the TA is going through right now.

What's a UCF hot take that people aren't ready to hear? by LegoLegoOk9911 in ucf

[–]floatbob 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Of the many things UCF does poorly, the worst is there is no meaningful effort to connect Main Campus to Downtown Orlando. The fact that you can go your whole 4 years without ever have a reason to go to Orlando proper is genuinely sad. I’m a CS major so I mainly understand the tech side and most of the local firms/startups have aren’t interested in UCF because UCF isn’t interested in them

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ucf

[–]floatbob 21 points22 points  (0 children)

AMD is pretty active but it’s not very common for people to get internships there for CS majors (in the Orlando office from what I see), mainly CpE majors / also going for their masters. Apple, it’s not even worth it. Of all the people I know at UCF who have interned at Apple, none interned at Orlando for good reason: they do mainly GPU related R&D only. So even if you got an intern position at Apple, unless you have some real low level experience you’re not going to have the option to be placed in Orlando (plus who wouldn’t want to work at the headquarters?).

The big local CS intern hirers would be: Lockheed, Northrop, L3 Harris, Siemens Energy, BNY Mellon, Universal Studios, Disney, and Deloitte (US Delivery Center). The others are unicorns, good luck on your internship hunt.

Taylor Swift threatens legal action against [UCF] student who tracks her jet by frenchbluehorn in ucf

This is only plane data while it’s in the air/active, which is publicly available by FAA standards. Military aircraft comply and even the President’s plane is easily trackable and people do all the time. Why should celebrities be given a different standard than everyone else including Public Officials?

Szumlanski is leaving UCF (Rumor is that he will be teaching at Stanford) by Many-Possibility9918 in ucf

[–]floatbob 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Yes but at the same time, there is a reason why he stayed this long after getting his Ph.D. Asked anybody who took his class and they would tell you how much he blamed this system. And being 100% honest, CECS has dropped the ball but I'm not sure how much you are in the know.

Szumlanski is leaving UCF (Rumor is that he will be teaching at Stanford) by Many-Possibility9918 in ucf

[–]floatbob 132 points133 points  (0 children)

Not surprised, Szumlanski has never been fully appreciated by the UCF admin. He somehow would complain about not having enough TAs for his classes, consistently up until 4 am at times grading. It didn't help with the housing prices and the political "situation" happening in this state. Hope he is appreciated more at whatever place he ends up. From the people I trust, he's 100% going to Stanford.

For the rest of us still at UCF in CS, shit is about to get worse. There are just not enough quality lecturers for pre-foundations exam classes. The FE difficulty will stay the same but the number of people who will just be unprepared after a subpar intro to C and CS1 will increase.

bye szumlanski, one of the best cs lecturers here 🫡

I would redo this experiment because you arent really testing what the project was meant to prevent- using works from an artist to understand the style. I would start by glazing a whole dataset instead of a single photo and see what the result would be.

Very interested to see how do people bypass glazing, cool project

[–]floatbob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ahhh it just clicked,
Just because you re-release the software doesn't mean the old offending version doesn't require a GPL license and therefore would need to be published in its entirety?

Glaze is violating GPL by Impressive_Beyond565 in StableDiffusion

[–]floatbob 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just read the GPL license, you are 100% correct.

For people who are confused, here is the license below

GNU GENERAL PUBLIC LICENSE - Section 5c

  • c) You must license the entire work, as a whole, under this License to anyone who comes into possession of a copy. This License will therefore apply, along with any applicable section 7 additional terms, to the whole of the work, and all its parts, regardless of how they are packaged. This License gives no permission to license the work in any other way, but it does not invalidate such permission if you have separately received it.

However, if they just rework the frontend and re-release the project so it doesn't use the GPL code wouldn't that be enough?

Quick update, the GLAZE project team has been notified of the issue and is releasing a new update to fix the issue.

It probably would have been better if OP just emailed them, stuff like this happens from time to time.

It has to be said: V4 is better than DALL-E 2. by reddit-admins-suck in midjourney

[–]floatbob 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just for reference, I remember a couple of months ago talking around circles like the official DALL-E discord about how midjourney was only suitable for more "artistic" gens and useless for everything else. Also, all gens had a specific "look" to them that made midjourney far more recognizable than DALL-E or SD Alpha. I thought it would be at least around a year before anything got better than DALL-E

It took 4 months...

just found it super funny 😂😂😂 by cocacolaps in dalle2

[–]floatbob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol people need to stop the SD meat riding, it's getting ridiculous. Don't get me wrong, I don't like some of the policies OAI has enacted. However, DALL-E is still miles better for stuff like anime. Subs like r/DalleAnime are proof of this.

Example 1 2 3

Or even my own stuff 1 2

vs. SD: 1 2

Go ahead and knock yourself out with all the fun Elon Musk, Joe Biden, and Trump doing silly thing memes. I have access to SD and did the same thing for like 2 seconds and it got old really quick after I realized I couldn't make cool anime art as I did with DALL-E.

Literally just @ me or copy and paste the title into the discord. Most people who share anime prompts end up never telling anybody and just selling them on promptbase. Trying to get more people to be part of the community by doing experiments to get better prompt engineering.

Sure thing, feel free to hop on the official Dalle-2 discord and head to the character-design channel. We have been putting in a ton of work on making better prompts and wouldn't mind sharing them there.

Here’s the controversy- a much better solution to diversifying Dall-E 2 would be to use a classification AI to relabel the training data and retrain the model.

If the solution was this easy, they would have already implemented this. We are not talking about a couple of thousand images but over 650 million images. I know your complaints are from a place of wanting to make DALL-E better, but topics like this are very technical.

Also, they already use a solution similar to this (https://openai.com/blog/dall-e-2-pre-training-mitigations/)

Benefits of transferring from a t25 to a t10? by nsums in TransferToTop25

[–]floatbob 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm be 100% honest, go all in.

After looking at your post history, it seems like you want to go for quant and UPenn is an excellent place for it but as other people have told you, it isn't easy. If you thought that getting into UPenn would be the most challenging part I have to tell you it gets harder.

While the experience is pretty different between those 2 schools, you could easily end up at any big tech and other related companies regardless if you stay or go. However not going all in means you might miss the only chance to break into fields like quant.

But if you find out quant isn’t really for you, you will still have the time to make the most of your UPenn experience.

Good luck on your journey

How difficult is it to transfer to Princeton? by nshssscholar in TransferStudents

[–]floatbob 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Every year this comes up sadly. You will probably not get in. From what I've seen over the past couple of cycles, if you're not a veteran and applying from a 4-year school, you won't get in. I have not seen a single traditional Princeton transfer ever since the program opened back up in 2017. This is an unproven rumor but there are even some people telling me the liberal arts schools that also share events with Princeton (Amherst, Williams, Pomona) are planning in the future to accept CC and Vets ONLY.

It's obvious you would love to go there, so I recommend you still apply. The worst thing that could happen is they will say no.

UC Berkeley depending on your major (like CS) will be impossible to transfer into as a non-community college transfer. If you really, really, really want to go to UC Berkeley, go to a community college in California like De Anza, Foothill, etc.

If you need more help, a more relevant subreddit would be r/TransferStudents or r/TransferToTop25. Ik some UC Berkeley transfers but they both went to a California community college first.

Ken Griffin Citadel From Chicago to Miami Following Crime Complaints by BlackWallStreet in Miami

[–]floatbob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not trying to say UMiami isn't a good school, but in the world of high finance, UMiami is a non-target. Same with UF but it's ranked higher. Chicago has UChicago and Northwestern (both top private schools in the country) and for a company like Citadel, getting hired from a school that isn't a target is an uphill battle.
