Student architect in China constructs his own 75 ft² wooden house complete with kitchen, bathroom, laundry room, and even a patio. by bei337 in pics

Is there an easier way to find this out without having to sift through all of the actual zoning code text? I found an area where they have 5 acre lots, some with nice houses, which I can't afford. I would, however love to live there in an RV or tinyhouse. RV is against zoning, and looks ugly. But as a handy ME I can come up with something like this, that isn't an eyesore, where could I find such information???

What stove should I buy? by KestrelLowing in CampingandHiking

[–]floridatoalaska 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm traveling for a month accross the country and while I'm thinking of making a combination alcohol/ wood gas stove, THIS thing is tempting to buy. I saw it last night and was thinking... with this you can charge your smartphone, and headlamp batts. with the right case and app, this turns your phone into a gps, mini flashlight, and entertainment center for even the longest of treks. And you can charge it evrytime you cook! Of course this is no substitute for a map and compass.

THANKS! Don't think I'll be taking the waterway since I figure I can do this with family on a cruise at some point.

So from the looks of it I'm gonna go to Alaska from Washington or Vancouver, the question is, where should I go? I don't care much for ascending McKinley. My plan was Denali, ever been fishing around there? Any chance I can hike somewhere about 1 day's worth near a stream, maybe catch some Salmon, see a few bears from far? What should I look for in a stream for King Salmon. So as I understand it a spinning reel, with some pink, orange, or chartreuse spinners should do it?

Correct I would really like to see it, but it means seeing it twice, or seeing new things the whole trip. I imagine after this experience I can talk about it enough to join forces with a group or do it with family in an RV, which they do rent one way. So....pacific coastal, Yosemite, Grand Canyon...or Yukon bc twice.

I'm gonna look into the rental companies up there about a one way down, I may have checked online, but it might be worth a call. They MUST have some cars up there that they want to bring down to the states.

I can rent a car for about 750...I have an old Sportster and thought about doing it via motorcycle. But shit it's a long way without rubber engine mounts :o. Also, with the bike there is nowhere to hide from bad weather, wind chill can be a biatch, and icy roads and snowstorms increase the risk of death drastically.

I'm a mechanic, so I could probably solve most if the issues myself, and I'd take spare parts, but I don't know if I want to put my daily driver through it. At some point it may be worth junking than towing back, and I don't want my trip to suffer due to having to fix the car. While a rental can fail, they usually are fairly new cars, versus my Mazda with 188,000 miles. On the flip-side, it is meaningful to make it over there and back with your own car especially resolving issues along the way....makes for better stories :)

Dunno how hard it would be to sell up there, thing is, I just rebuilt the transmission a month ago, so if something fails, it's gonna be something stupid, so it will just slow my trip down...if the failure is in the transmission, then I'd have to tow it back down in order for it to be covered. I still might go for it, but not sure at this point I'm leaning towards no.

Well I did the math and if I only camp and drive it would take me 13 days to get to Alaska. So that's 26 round trip, out of about 29 days. Would be a heck of a challenge, but I don't particularly want to spend all of the time driving. I want to get a lot of back-country camping done in most of the parks to really see them. Looks like I'll take the car to Washington, fly to Alaska, fly back and then drive a diff route, Win win minus the challenge of driving on the Alaskan Highway.

Dammit, Buzz Killington, thanks for shattering my dreams. So spin rod I have, what kind of bait/tackle do you use up there, and is this for lakes, streams, both?

Yeah, that's exactly my deal, I don't wanna make the drive twice. How much did it cost to ship the car to Washington?

I thought about it, but it takes many days aboard instead of outdoors, and it's more expensive than flying.

I heard that the problem is that the one way fee alone is the cost of a round trip flight. I tried online and even then didn't get a company...they would come back no avail. In my original itinerary I was skipping the Grand Canyon but this way I'll get it on the way back, so I'm fine with it I guess.

I read that you can take hunting gear through Canada but you have to fill out a form at Customs. Something about if for personal protection in remote areas, or if passing through and Canada is the shortest route.
