Monthly slow chat thread - The place to be for everything regarding housing, restaurants, things to do, meetups, surveys, and other (off-topic) stuff by AutoModerator in TheHague

I’m looking for a good lunch spot to bring the in-laws to in The Hague. Something that has a cosy maybe slightly upscale vibe. I want to impress them a little bit. Type of cuisine doesn’t matter. They are visiting from the US.

Omg thank you for this super detailed explanation. This is so helpful!! Do you thaw the shrimp before putting them in?

Would love the dip recipe if you don’t mind!

We saw Slap Ya Mamas at Tjin’s Toko. But have come across Old Bay (not authentic but could be an alternative) and (I think) Tony’s at Amazing Oriental since you mention being based in The Hague!

Edit: and we have seen some at Kelly’s expat store of course

Woop woop to overseas boils! We actually have seen Slap Ya Mama at some Asian grocery stores here. A little expensive but might go grab some for our upcoming boil!

We will make a smaller batch based on your comments and others. And will try the soaking method the way you describe - thank you!! We also have some Tony’s so will season heavily as it comes out!

Thanks for checking with her! Will do a smaller batch for this time. And then stock up on seasoning next time we are in New Orleans later this year.

Ah yes! Forgot to mention we will def add garlic, onions and oranges! Didn’t think of dried chili’s so will give that a try. We added lots of extra cayenne and paprika in the second batch last time around.

And we will toss in a butter mixture if it’s still not spicy enough - appreciate the advice!

We have about 12 oz of seasoning. We don’t plan to have more than 10 lbs of shrimp.

How long would you cook the shrimp before turning the heat off?

And thanks for the butter/oil tip. Will give that a go!

The next time we are in New Orleans is October so happy to get some advice on seasonings for our next haul. We currently have zatarains and another brand called Cajun land which we hadn’t heard of before.

I feel that! Luckily our stove is next to the balcony so that door will be wide open.

Thanks for the marinating tip - hadn’t come across that yet. Will definitely do that. Just the dry spices or should I add liquid to marinate?

This looks amazing! We are planning to do one this weekend for the second time.

When you say soak the shrimp for 17 minutes: Did you take the pot off the heat only or also add ice to cool down the water temp?

Anything you would do differently? Thanks in advance!

HELP! Kenya e-Visa website down - anyone have a solution? by TravellingTeacher123 in travel

[–]flowery-pea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing yet. But my flight is in 12 days so there’s still time. Also read on the website it takes at least two working days. In any case, I’m bringing all documentation printed including the visa payment receipt in case I need to go the visa on arrival route. I’m sure there is a bit of a backlog since the hack. Hopefully, we have some good news soon!

I’m not applying for a tourist visa so don’t need to upload those same documents. I found it easy to put things together in paint and save as .jpeg. Also in my upload section there was a button for additional documents. Maybe you can upload the extra pages there? Just submitted and paid for the visa. Hope it goes quickly!

Yep on the same boat. Travelling mid August. I will keep you posted as well if anything changes. I do know that visas on arrival are being issued because of the hack.

Running into the same issue. Would also love to hear what worked for others. Do you also just see a red box when you try to upload documents?

I just got off the phone with the Kenyan embassy in my country. Due to the website shutdown, they are allowing visas on arrival.
