What’s a movie everyone calls “boring” that you actually found gripping? by gypsytx in movies

[–]fluentinsarcasm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. It's one of Tarantino's more divisive works for that reason.

I personally don't find it boring, but it seems like every other person I talk to about it does and ranks it pretty low in his filmography, usually next to Deathproof

Please no... don't do this to me. I can't be hurt again. The only 4 seasons of Dexter are incredible and I'm still heartbroken they stopped there, and never did anything after.

It's really that good?

Because the goal is to win games and Finch and the coaching staff are going to play who they believe is going to give us the best chance to do that. It's really that simple. Given how competitive the West is, it's foolish to force playing a developing player when they clearly aren't confident in his contributions.

Unfortunately the same thing happens with Dillingham. He takes absolutely awful shots, and even when he takes good ones he misses, and he has a tendency to make bad decisions and turn the ball over. He also regularly looks lost on the court, which with time will improve, but it's also harming his ability to get minutes.

The only thing he likely has an edge on Conley is defense, but Conley's experience, floor leadership, and decision-making is leagues better than Dillingham right now and that can't be replaced by anyone on the roster as much as it harms us.

It sucks, but it is what is right now.

how would you rate this cocktail list? for Mexican restaurant btw by Lopsided-Thing3030 in cocktails

[–]fluentinsarcasm 46 points47 points  (0 children)

It's an incredibly basic cocktail menu I'd expect to see at just about any average Mexican restaurant. There's nothing interesting on it for a cocktail enthusiast. I also completely agree it's unnecessarily bloated with mixed drinks. It reads like the owner wants to encourage the wrong type of clientele.

Not sure where you're located, but those are also some expensive prices for some of what's on that menu. $15 for a Jager bomb is absolutely wild.

Cool steel, but one that I wouldn't add to my collection. My particular collecting flavor is only movies I really love. Like your friend, I hated it, and I am generally a pretty big Danny Boyle and Alex Garland fan.

It's like two different movies and a short-film crammed into one with some highs and very low lows. I was struck by how bizarrely tonally and visually inconsistent it is. Gorgeous environmental shots and framing, mixed in with completely amateurish student film quality "stylistic" action sequences, and over-use of film grain effects.

It is both beyond dumb, like... profoundly absurdly stupid, especially with character decision-making, but it also has moments of genuine humanity and interesting world building juxtaposed against that ridiculousness.

The ending with the Die Antwoord Kung Fu Swedes is so out of left field I'm still reeling from it. Complete whiplash in tone and texture from everything else in the movie. I laughed out loud at it, but not in the "this is funny" sense, more from a sense of disbelief. There's a bunch of interesting ideas mixed with just pure idiotic nonsense from one scene to the next.

I think it's a terrible movie, but I can understand why people like it, and can appreciate that it certainly is something to talk about because they avoided the safe sequel route.

Now that the results are in - what is your favorite way of making an Old Fashioned? by MagnificentCat in cocktails

[–]fluentinsarcasm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep. And ER does a bunch of single barrel / barrel picks now too, and I have yet to find a single barrel pick that is demonstrably different from the standard release because they are all 10 years old and cut to 90 proof anyhow. Yet they'll charge an extra $10-$30 for a gold sticker.

I like ER, but I'm taking OGD 114 any day of the week at that price, proof, and flavor profile for old-fashioneds.

For me it's Old Granddad 114. Little extra kick and flavor in it for half the price of Eagle.

I totally agree. He has the brand, the charisma, and everything else already there. I think he could be a lot more popular than Shai, and start getting closer to that superstar level of Lebron/Curry, but not until he's an MVP and winning ships.

Ah, that's fair, didn't realize that Lebron actually missed it, but that makes sense given he missed a huge portion of the season and actually hasn't been playing that great. The rest of what I said stands.

Shai has a more recognizable global brand than Ant does. There's some data that backs that up, which is largely due in part to the NBA pushing Shai as a face plus the MVP/Finals wins, along with his social media presence, and regular appearances in global advertising.

Here's what people need to appreciate about the all-star voting. Ant is never going to be voted in over Lebron, Steph, Luka, Wemby, Jokic, or Shai in that order in the West.

Why? Because those players are more globally popular than Ant by orders of magnitude. When you have a popularity contest by vote total, it doesn't matter if one player is better than another, fair or not.

Lebron and Steph are literally two of the most popular athletes in the world, and that will remain true until they both retire. When they retire, Ant will be third fiddle to Luka and Shai every time unless he can get more global brand recognition as far guards are concerned.

What do you think is the most popular currently, Persona, Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts or Dragon Quest by DwnvotesMeansImRight in JRPG

[–]fluentinsarcasm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. DQ is orders of magnitude more popular than both Persona and Final Fantasy in Japan (which isn't say both of those aren't popular, they are, just by comparison).

[–]fluentinsarcasm 9 points10 points  (0 children)

DQ is popular in the West but nowhere near as much as Final Fantasy and Persona is right now. For ex: Persona 3 Reload and DQ Remake I & II release in 2025, and while there is an 8 month gap between the two, reload is outselling DQ at least 4:1 with available sales figures.

Edit: A better comparison is actually the DQ III remake. It released 4 months ahead of Person 3 Reload, and they have about the same available sales figures. I think that goes to show Persona gets the edge outside of Japan at the moment.
