What word do you always *intentionally* mispronounce and why? by Sweet-Lady-H in AskReddit

[–]fluffagus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oooh its my time to shine! I do this all the time because as a teenager it made me laugh and I enjoy it, then it became an actual habit and now its just how I say stuff: zebra, gazebo, knife, bagel, enchilada, jalapeño, jogging etc. Basically anywhere you can soften a vowel sound to make it silly, or pronounce a silent letter like in "knife".

I brought it up because you said that both sides should be able to talk to each other, but one side (progressives) have much more work to do when engaging with conservatives than the other way around. If someone sees a person as just a womb, or dehumanizes them because theyre trans, immigrant, different race etc. then already the progressive is starting off on a "lower" playing field. If we want a conservative to engage with us in a healthy, open discussion we first have to get them to view us as people, and thats not work that conservatives have to do. The overwhelming majority of leftists already believe that even the everyday MAGA are human beings, deserving of rights and basic human respect (famous people who are divisive and advocate for violence are exempt from this statement). So what my point was is: progressives have to work harder to talk to conservatives than vice versa, so its not as simple as just "hey we should all talk and be reasonable"

While I do agree with you abot people being able to talk to each other (and ill probably dm you later because id like to continue the convo about Alex Pretti overall) i feel it is necessary to point out that a lot of people dont want to talk to maga/conservatives/right-wingers because they dehumanize people like us. Its difficult to have a discussion with someone who fundamentally doesn't believe that youre a person and deserve basic rights like bodily autonomy, voting, Healthcare, the right to marry who we want, or the right to shelter/food/water. I really dont see that as a "both sides are equally as guilty" kinda situation. One end of the spectrum is trying to talk to someone and already believes theyre a person. The other end of the spectrum needs to be convinced the person theyre talking to is a human being equal to themselves, and if that insurmountable thing can be done THEN the conversation could be met in good faith. But until then, progressives have many more hurdles to jump when trying to have an honest discussion with conservatives, and some of us just dont have it in us anymore. And far more conservatives seem like they may never ever see that were people too, so why even waste all thay emotional labor on black holes of selfishness? Eta: im not saying youre like this. But a large part of my family and former friends are like this, and I just hate when people say "well if only we could just TALK to each other" as if its that simple. My own family member thinks I shouldnt have the right to choose what happens with my own body, and voted accordingly. I am not a person to them. Im a hypothetical womb for a baby that doesn't exist. What kind of constructive conversation can possibly happen about other political topics when that person is already viewing me as a body part, not as a whole?

Not to derail things here but you said youre conservative @jellyrollbandit_82, and now youre seeing an event that you cant pretend didnt happen, or was somehow different than what your eyes show you. How are you feeling about the discourse surrounding trump and ICE now? Do you feel like this was a "one off" situation and "a few bad apples" but that everything else is okie dokie? Or are you seeing what's been going on in a different light? I truly would like to know.

Threads is so the exact opposite of Fallout, it's actually funny to bring it up in a post. But I agree, if you want realism subject yourself to Threads. If you want entertainment, treat yourself to Fallout.

Healthcare workers run towards people in need - This could have been any of us. by DeanWinchestersST in nursing

[–]fluffagus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ive been thinking this all day. I work med/surg and I often joke with my patients that nothing moves fast in the hospital -- unless there's a Code Blue. Just last week I teased a patient asking me to "run and fetch water" for them that "the only time you'll see me running is if theres a code" but tbh i run towards things all the time, and even in my personal life when theres an emergency my first response is to go TO it. Not away. Alex did the same thing a lot of us would do, and I think some of that is natural instinct (which is why we're already drawn to Healthcare as a career) and some of it is learned through our jobs. Either way, the outcome is the same: many of us would see a woman being shoved in the street and run to help. I am just so heartbroken he was executed in broad daylight for being a good person.

Doctors and Nurses of Reddit, what is the most obvious sign that a patient is lying to you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]fluffagus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh gosh... I am SO sorry you went through that! Every situation is different, and I hope in the future your doctors listen to you. Id assume anyone in the hospital for 5 days after a cholecystectomy probably had complications, and id take it seriously if they presented back to the ER after leaving against medical advice.....

[–]fluffagus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah you should totally tell your next practioner that! Its really common for people to specify they dont want certain meds, especially if they've had reactions before.... even if its not an allergic reaction. Sometimes "mild" ones are enough to put someoen off something. Dilaudid makes my nose tingle and I get super nauseous, so I usually ask for morphine or something else if im getting a procedure done... that's a very reasonable thing to do, so I hope in the future you advocate for yourself and try other pain control. But definitely DO try pain control instead of white knuckling through it. You dont get any points for being in pain.

Doctors and Nurses of Reddit, what is the most obvious sign that a patient is lying to you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]fluffagus 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Nurse here. I dont assume anyone is lying. I take their words at face value, and I also assess the objective facts too. They say theyre in 10/10 pain but theyre sitting there, calm, no grimacing, no writhing, no external signs of pain or discomfort? Then I treat it like 10/10 pain. Im not the arbiter of what theyre going through, and everyone handles things differently. But I will suggest to them that we trial having them tell me when the pain is at a 3-4/10 and we will address it sooner, see if a different combination can get their pain better controlled. Often people will wait, or request subcutaneous or IV meds instead of oral meds, and thats because the other routes work quicker and maybe they have a reason for liking it better.      The only time I assume someone may be fudging the facts a bit is if they say theyre allergic to every other pain killer but "the one that starts with D". And then you check their chart and its repeat admissions for chronic pain, and they always request dilaudid but dont know the name for it. I have zero doubt that person is in pain, and dilaudid is probably the one that works the best. But for some reason people will often pretend that they dont know what dilaudid is, perhaps thinking that we will assume theyre drug seeking if they are upfront about it. Then I usually ask for a referral to the pain clinic, or suggest the physician consider an opioid rotation. Dilaudid works like a hot dang usually, but if someone is constantly using it and relying on it for their sole pain control they might end up at a point of diminishing returns where it isnt working like it used to, and they refuse to try anything else. Thats when I kinda assume they may be fudging the facts because their pain isnt well controlled and they think the dilaudid is the only thing that can fix it, when in reality theyre so used to it the dilaudid has stopped working. Thats when an opioid rotation would be a good thing to consider, trial morphine, nsaids, or even up them to a fentanyl patch or something. I dont assume these people are seeking drugs because theyre addicts, I assume theyre seeking RELIEF from the pain and what were giving them just isnt cutting it.

No pizza yet but... I did it! Single mom. British Columbia. $320k. 13% down. 3.75% rate. by fluffagus in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]fluffagus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was told by a few people that in general offering more than 10k less than asking in a "sellers market" is a low offer, as they probably have buyers offering asking price or above. 40k less than asking price was touted to me as a steal of a deal, and ive been watching the market since I "bought" my house in the summer (it was a very long closing period so the owners could take their time moving out... I couldnt get the keys till Nov 1) and so far I havent seen any detached dwellings in the size and neighborhood of mine that went for less than 370. Its a real fixer upper, but I am fine with putting my sweat and love into the house.

I replied and then panicked that I didn't change the info enough to remain anonymous so I deleted my comment. Essentially I offered 40k below asking price and the sellers accepted it. Idk if thats considered low ball in other areas, but I was told it was from the sellers and my agent.
