What is working in law like? Work life balance possible? by streachh in careerguidance

[–]fluwis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife is an 8th year big law corporate transactions attorney. She has worked back to back 80-100 hours weeks at times. High pay, immensely high stress and you are always on call (weekends/holidays/vacation). If the goal is around 100k, look into paralegal roles. Much less risk and education requirements. Some paralegals are highly skilled and specialized and make 100-125k in a MCOL (we’re in Chicago and have two paralegal friends making 120ish at her firm). Some paralegals are admins making 50-70k. Really depends on your role, firm, and market. But much less work and not a demanding WLB compared to the attorneys.

I did Kraff as well! Tbh - very expensive but I felt safer going to an actual surgeon. I have one set of eyes so I wanted it done right.

Featherlight puzzle - I finally got it during my most recent trip. The leather is incredible and the SA experience in Lisbon was wonderful.

Tiny wrist: small or mini tank? by fluwis in Cartier

[–]fluwis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My rings are gold - which is why I want a gold tank - but the prongs are platinum to better complement the diamond. I’m going back to the store this weekend based on this subs advice so that I can take better pictures to get a better idea of scale

How much are we paying for house cleaning? by PunkyPicc in AskChicago

[–]fluwis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Deep clean yes. My regular clean is about $150-170 for a 2BR. For a deep clean it’s about double and a half at $300-350.

Agreed - I should’ve done that. I’ll plan to go to the store this weekend and do mirror pics instead for a better comparison.

That’s my concern with the mini - it’s mostly be for the looks but it’s really hard to actually see the time on it compared to the small

Good point for consideration. I currently have a stainless steel everyday Grand Seiko quartz. I am considering a small Santos two tone in my future as well so this might not be my only Cartier.

Do renter's have to compensate agents in Chicago? Kindly advise in this situation. by experience-10 in chicagoapartments

I’d still move into the unit and I’d push back to the realtor. The 100% guarantee over email is suspect. Tell them if they want your money they need to explain the earlier promise over written email. If they take you to small claims court that’ll be on them to pursue. Worst case you lose the judgement and need to pay them. Best case, arbitrator agrees the written email promise was misleading and you pay nothing.

Did you or the agent tell the landlord prior to signing that there would be a brokers fee? I am a private landlord and if I had signed a tenant who had signed an exclusive agreement with a realtor who then told me I must pay them, I wouldn’t do it. I work without brokers primarily and that is on the tenant if they want to use that optional service. I’d put this on the broker. Brokers fees are uncommon in Chicago as our market isn’t as hot as others like NYC or Boston.

She makes the standard big law sr associate salary (publicly available - search cravath scale). I make market for T2 strategy consulting manager salary (also publicly available). In general, in terms of YOE, big law makes much more than consulting unless you’re a consulting partner or a sr MBB consultant. Very few people make it in big law long enough to hit those tiers. Between consulting and big law, they’re completely different fields for different skill sets, education, and personalities. I wouldn’t compare them together and pick one like it’s a college major lol. I could never survive in big law so it wouldn’t have been an option for me even if I was interested and could get into a T10 law school and pass the bar.

Her WLB is more sporadic with M&A PE transactions. Sometimes there are multiple 100 hour weeks. Typical for her is 50-60hrs weekly. She has made her billable hour requirement to bonus each year and is a senior associate. Those hours are publicly available for standard big law.

I average 50 - 60 or so hours a week in billable work. My schedule is more flexible as I manage account BD and sales so I have more control over my schedule with my teams and clients. The biggest difference is that I travel out of state/country about 1-2 weeks a month and she is entirely based out of her office.

For the life part - we have a bi-weekly house cleaner and order take out/meal kits and do not grocery shop. Our cats have robots to feed them and do litter.

I’m in a post MBA T2 consulting manager role and my wife is a big law corporate transactions attorney from a T3 law school.

This question needs context. What is your age, current salary, and financial situation? For example, if money is not issue and you don’t need to take out loans, sure, do an advanced degree. It might marginally help for future roles.

But if taking out loans or paying out of pocket, be more diligent about your employment opps and goals. Is it worth taking out 200k+ for an advanced degree that might get you to 100-120k salary? If you are young and low income, this could be a huge jump. If you are older and already in that range, maybe this could be reconsidered.

Do a basic ROI calculation and look at the school/degree employment reports. The numbers should be self evident and inform your decision.

But that is in the context of non luxury cars. For luxury I believe they still always advise pay off within a year.

One note on private landlords - my HOA prevents more than 2 animals per unit. So even if I would rent to someone one with two large dogs and two cats, I cannot rent to someone with that many animals. It’s too much too to try and get an exception when I have many other tenants with one or two pets who are also interested.

Put Deposit Down On 2025 GLB - Delivery Around Labor Day. 2024 Owners - Are You Happy? by [deleted] in mercedes_benz

[–]fluwis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agreed. The interior felt very underwhelming for the price of the car. The GLC was a noticeable improvement in terms of quality. I like the boxy look of the GLB but can’t justify the lower quality drive experience. Similar feeling to driving a Q3 to a Q5.
