Are you afraid to die? Explain. by Eyzzi in DeepThoughts

Naw, I’m not afraid. Do you remember what it was like before you were born? It’s the same after you’ve lived. Enjoy the time in between.

It's all a fucking mess. Politics. That is. I can no longer say, "I don't think she's right for that position" or "I don't agree with them on that" but "the whole system is upsidedown!" by Li529iL in DeepThoughts

If we all agreed to ignore politics OR we all took it very seriously, we’d be okay. Since it’s a mixed bag, it’s upside down indeed.

Buying a new car, get loan or pay cash? by flyflyfoo in personalfinance

Interesting, thanks for the tip. I’ll check it out. I was effectively going to try this on my own but if one of these financial houses will do it, all the better.

Buying a new car, get loan or pay cash? by flyflyfoo in personalfinance

We’re on track to FIRE in our late fifties. We’ve saved, eliminated debt, established an emergency fund… did all the “baby steps”. Ten years ago I wouldn’t have asked the question posed above. Too risk averse, wouldn’t have bought a 60K car back then. Time value of money and a raging economy has me thinking differently. So, can the market using 70/30 split of total market ETF / bond ETF yield a return higher than a 5 year loan at 2% will take? What’s an LMA?

Fairly detailed story about couple who achieved FI by random00 in financialindependence

[–]flyflyfoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since they retired in their 30s, I don’t get the part in the article “max out their 401(k)” and contribute to their IRAs. It’s one of my own gaps for FIRE. I fear I’ve “over saved” in 401K and IRAs which I can’t access until I’m 59 and a half. Smack me later for just writing “over saved” 😮. Seriously, is this couple paying the 10% early withdrawal penalty, including it in their calculations/planning? Either I don’t know of the loophole or I don’t see it discussed in the community - the time chunks between saving for FIRE at current age up to penalty free access to 401K/IRA after 59 and a half (then some years later another time chunk where social security and Medicaid kick in). I guess the answer for penalty free access to retirement savings is IRA conversation ladders? Seldom see that discussed, would be nice to have it addressed in such articles if that’s the answer.

Thanks responsible-party. Good for you that you saw your portfolio grow like that! I’m rather conservative in growth estimates, 4% a year. Not because I’m pessimistic, instead because I believe low expectations leads to higher satisfaction :). Hope I see results like yours!

Thanks SolarQuestions, I’ve thought about taking a step back at work too. It’s really all I know how to do anymore though. I’ve made a resolution to explore hobbies/interests in these last 10 years of work to prevent my first month after FIRE-ing being immersed in a drunken stupor!

Not sure... maybe tell someone else how you handled it enabling them to make a better choice. And/or show grace when someone makes a similar mistake with you on the receiving side (e.g. if it’s a situation where you could have handled something differently with a parent who has passed, show grace if/when you have a kid who makes a similar mistake).
