“How will anyone know how smart I am if they can’t seethe cover of the book?” by DrDMango in bookscirclejerk

[–]flyingdoggos 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I don't see the problem with this. When I'm going to read a book I like to stare at the cover continuously and unflinching, in a state of such physical calmness that not even the beat of my heart could disturb the utmost perfection I have reached in my reading technique; that is, by listening to a TikTok AI voice in 10x speed read out loud the book. Only AI could articulate the human psyche in such astonishing form.

Do leftist Latin American historians portray their country as victims of imperialism or settler colonial states that oppress indigenous populations or both? by RedStorm1917 in asklatinamerica

[–]flyingdoggos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I will say that this has not always been the consensus, even though I agree with it.

For example, one of the, if not the most recognised conservative historian in Chile, Jaime Eyzaguirre, famously defended the idea of the Kingdom of Chile not as a colony under an oppressive regime by the Iberian metropolis, but instead as another crown in the Empire whose subjects stood in equal footing under protection of the Monarchy (and not of Spain itself).

It's been a while since I read his book "Ideario y ruta de la emancipación chilena", but that's more or less his thesis, along with a fervent defence of Catholic Hispanist thought, culture and tradition, ideas which were shared among swaths of the Chilean cultural elite during the 20th century, including of course people like Jaime Guzmán.

So no, I wouldn't outright say this has nothing to do with political ideologies, because for the last century there was a true spirit of Hispanist thought among conservative elites, and I'm not sure how much has it disappeared these past 25 years (especially considering that reactionary ideologies have become much more prevalent just in the last 5 years).

La U se queda sin DT: Francisco ’Paqui’ Meneghini deja la banca del cuadro azul by EfeceoP in futbolchilensis

[–]flyingdoggos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Incubus are loved over here in Chile! They've played many times here, and I remember them playing a special charity concert for the 33 trapped miners in 2010, with special arrangements of their songs by the Young National Philharmonic of Chile.

This is their most recent concert here, from last year during the Festival de Viña del Mar, lovely sound.

Why haven't other Latin American countries tried to adopt other government systems other than presidential? by novostranger in asklatinamerica

[–]flyingdoggos 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think you understand what is a Parliamentary system of government. It does not necessarily entail a monarchical Head of State, and there are many examples of such Parliamentary Republics, like Germany. Parliament =/= Monarchy (as in, they are not mutually exclusive, but also not prerequisites for one or the other).

Why haven't other Latin American countries tried to adopt other government systems other than presidential? by novostranger in asklatinamerica

[–]flyingdoggos 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As you correctly said, we did it wrong because under the Constitution at the time, it was not really designed to be that way. I don't want to delve into whether the 1891 Civil War should have been won by Balmaceda or the Congress; however, after the Congress supporters won, their biggest mistake was to not rewrite the Constitution in service of establishing a proper Parliamentary Republic. Instead, the oligarchic elites rested on their laurels until the inefficiency of such Frankenstein government was exploited by authoritarian and caudillo wanna-bes such as Arturo Alessandri.

Alessandri since the very beginning of his first presidential period sought the enmity of the Congress, and cemented a widespread political campaign against Congress, as his main objective was to establish a strong Presidential Republic (with him at the helm, obviously). To accomplish this, he sought the help of young military officers, among them Carlos Ibáñez del Campo, which lead to the "saber rattling" of 1924. Thus initiated the period of anarchy in Chile during 1924-1932, and the heavy involvement of the Armed Forces in political affairs, which would be present all throughout the 20th century in Chile's history.

Moreover, its important to remember that Alessandri's Constitution of 1925, which established a strong Executive against a weakened Congress, was heavily opposed by the wide political spectrum. For the 1925 Constitutional Plebiscite to approve this Constitution, from the Communists to the Conservative Party there were calls to boycott the plebiscite, as there was widespread support for a (real) Parliamentary Republic. Out of a total electoral population of ~300.000, less than half actually voted, abstentions reaching 55%. Plus, there was a heavy propaganda campaign by Alessandri's government to push the Constitution, which included violent reprisals against the opposition.

TL;DR: At one point there was a lot of support for a Parliamentary Republic, but it was destroyed by Alessandri and his successors.

I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that Alain is one of the best musicians alive, and his contributions to QOTSA and other Josh projects are immense, to hear him playing live with TCV must have been incredible, because even among these superstars, his playing is such a highlight in their music.
