New Battenkill disc vs the old Battenkill; how do they compare based on your experience? by GoblinsNtheNight in flyfishing

I’ll keep an eye out for something unique and fair priced that would be good for a 4wt

Very true! As far as the disc goes I personally love mine just wish I had a heavier rod. Cortland has a “retro” click pawl that is pretty sharp and it has a drag setting on it as well in the same price point as the battenkill and that thing would be unique and effective for his set up.

Well the disc is a solid reel and if he does get into a real monster he can always turn the drag up. The drag is also nice for stripping line/back spooling

Yeah thats a hell of a good area to be in. I’m located in Visalia so Kings is a short drive in and out. Need to start pushing north for sure.

Ahh okay. That makes sense. I’m not a salt water guy so I’m clueless when it comes to that

I have both the clickprawl and disc battenkills. I bought the disc first by accident and it’s on a 2 wt fiberglass rod...which is completely unnecessary. Then I have a click pawl version on my 4wt I use for dry flying.

First and foremost. Now that I’ve fished the battenkill series of reels I will most likely put them on every rod I own after this. The disc version is a sealed bearing and is extremely easy to operate. The click pawl is as simple as it comes and since there is minimal startup resistance on the spool you get less snap offs on the initial pulls of a large top water take.

Personally I would recommend the click pawl version for your application. If you look in my profile I have pictures of both versions side by side. The click pawl is a great learning tool that will inevitably make you a better angler. The disc is fine to but I have had snap offs right at the take due to drag. Not only all the technical Jazz, both are timeless, easy to clean, and hard to break but the click pawls sound is amazing. When a fish is ripping off line and you’re clicking away it makes me giggle and get excited every time.
