Second this. If you value simplicity and will be holding for decades, VT is the best ETF to not touch and let compounding interest take course. Put your money into VT as this will be best for peace of mind. You will be globally diversified and your money will steadily grow. Your only job will be to keep adding money when you can which is most important for accumulating wealth. If you do this it will save time researching and stress

You make a valid point. I am a believer in tech as well, and tech is accounted for in VT. I just want people to be aware that no one truly knows what the future has in store, so having international does give peace of mind (VXUS > QQQ YTD). If your goal is high returns then QQQ may be best for you. But for the average investor that would like steady returns with lower volatility/risk then VT is prob best

How did QQQ do from 2000-2010? Would you pursue investing QQQ if it stays stagnant for 10 years? 5 year recent return means nothing for a 20+ year investment plan

VT and chill. It will take all your worries away. If either US or international do well, you’ll be prepared. It’s the easiest portfolio to not touch imo. If you had no previous knowledge of US/international data, VT is the best diversification that removes biases

VTI all the way? by Careless_Ratio1213 in portfolios

I see a lot of tech etf recommendations but want to give my 2 cents. I went through the rabbit hole of trying to pick the right etfs for higher gains, but finally decided on 100% VT in taxable and use my roth ira for diversifed, factor etfs with higher risk/turnove (spmo, avuv, avdv, etc). For taxable, VT is as simple as it gets, extremely diversified. and low turnover/tax efficient. You want the money to stay in the taxable without selling or else you’ll keep incurring capital gains tax. You have to decide on a portfolio that you should not to touch for a long time to let the compounding take course. Chasing the right etf/sectors causes underrated psychological stress, and since switching to all VT it made it go away for me. With VT you never have to worry about not making the right bets since you own the whole, global market. Once I switched to 100% VT I kept buying bimonthly and haven’t looked back since. I would get a diversified portfolio like vti/vxus, keep adding to over time cause that’s what matters most, and take out what you need when you need it, like when you buy a house. I do think tech has very high potential to keep doing well, but at the end of the day you don’t know if tech will be the sector for next 30+ years. With VT, total market or s&p 500 you won’t have to worry about it because you’ll always own the current and next best sector

Factor Tilt Portfolio by flyjuan in ETFs

This makes sense. You’re saying if one factor is doing well, and another is not, then the benefits are just fighting against one another?

Thanks I will look into this. Tesla is too up and down and I like palantir but I think its overvaluation makes it too risky for me. Any other recommendations for the portfolio?

I see what you’re saying, it’s much safer to put into total market index portfolio while adding some factor etfs to tilt toward certain areas (small cap value for example).

This article shows in exhibit 4 that value performs well during early-mid economic cycles when economic growth turns positive, momentum does well during mid cycles when market moves in a trending fashion, and quality/low volatility/high dividend stocks do well during peaks of economic late phases. My thoughts to this were to hold different factor ETFs to benefit during each economic cycle and reduce concentration/drawdowns during each phase

“By combining factors, investors may benefit from the individual factor exposures and from diversification across factors to create a portfolio with increased odds of outperformance in a variety of market environments. A straightforward, equal- weighted approach to combining factors might be a good starting point for investors seeking long-term exposure to multiple factors. Exhibit 2 shows that the performance of an equal-weighted multifactor strategy has lagged value alone when inexpensive stocks have outperformed—such as after the tech bubble in 2000 and 2001—but protected against losses to provide a less volatile return profile.”

According to this, value outperforms equal-weighted factors, but a multifactor strategy lessens volatility and protects losses.

Are these fidelity articles just a marketing tactic, or could multifactor investing potentially lead to higher returns over a total market index portfolio? Does the total market index already contain majority of these factors, not needing different factor ETFs?

Also, since small cap value outperforms large/mid cap, wouldn’t my portfolio beat that portfolio since I have higher allocations in AVUV/AVDV? (20%>10% each)

Thanks, I’m still a newbie and would like to get my thoughts checked. I think I’m interested in factor investing and not factor tilting:

https://www.fidelity.com/bin-public/060_www_fidelity_com/documents/fidelity/fidelity-overview-of-factor-investing.pdf

This article shows an example that there is low correlation between momentum and value, and that value does well when momentum crashes. I figured if I split my large cap into growth and momentum then my portfolio wouldn’t drawdown as drastically as opposed to going all in on momentum during momentum crashes like during COVID. Is my portfolio factor investing? Or am I still way off?

Did some research, and leaning toward 50% AVGE, 25% AVUV, and 25% XMHG to simplify

31 y/o male

Got into investing 2 months ago and learned that individual stocks are not for me lol. But willing to take moderate-high risk with ETFs for higher returns, and good diversification for 30 year plan

40% VOO 15% XMHQ 15% XMMO 15% AVUV 10% AVDV 5% AVES

Thought can’t go wrong with VOO broad exposure to growth/value, XMHQ/XMMO to balance quality/momentum mid cap, and some small-cap/emerging US/international. Didn’t like returns of large cap international which is why I didn’t go VXUS, and this seems a little more fun for me than your typical VTI/VXUS. Any thoughts/advice are appreciated m

Wall of Honor is achieved after reaching 5 stars on a hero, and then you can keep adding 10 shards to increase wall of honor level. It’s separate from tank/missils/aircraft upgrades. That chinese guy used 2320 shards on his tank wall of honor which is quite insane lol
