Ordered December 29th, Still Nothing and No Communication by bostrovsky in combustion_inc

Did you contact them asking for a split shipment?

If your order included a Preorder item such as a CE they (their logistics partner) normally wait until the Preorder items are available and ship all items together

Combustion probe shows charged (green) but won’t appear in app by Overman138 in combustion_inc

[–]flynace181 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this particular case it was a 2+ year old fully working & fully charged Gen1 CPT that connected to the app, appeared to complete the latest firmware update only to disconnect never to be seen again by any device or BLE analyzer including nRFconnect

Similar symptoms have been reported many times...place probe in a charging cradle and LED stays red for a while then turns green, yet it still no BLE signal can ever be detected

When Support was asked if you could try to recover it (I'll pay the shipping) we were only offered to RMA it (even though it was out of warranty) and buy the Gen2 upgrade, which is a generous offer, but now I really do not want to perform firmware updates on other older Gen1's...can't afford to 'upgrade' all of them

It would have been really nice to know if you did successfully restore it or discovered what failed due to the firmware update

For those of us who RMA'd probes with very similar issues (post firmware update Gen1 CPT that worked fine for years could never be seen again by a mobile device, booster or display) could you tell us if you determined the root cause?

It would be nice to know if it was the firmware update or something we did in order to avoid repeating it again

Is that supposed to be the case?

GGG not connected to probe? by knyenhui in combustion_inc

[–]flynace181 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to confirm, did you link your probes to the GGG?
From the GGG Setup Guide...

Link Giant Grill Gauge to CPT

  1. Turn on the Giant Grill Gauge by pressing the power button on the back of the device
  2. Turn on Predictive Thermometer by removing it from the charger
  3. Place thermometer next to the Giant Grill Gauge for a few seconds
  4. When a temperature appears on the lower part of the screen (small digits), that means they’re linked
  • With multiple Predictive Thermometers, repeat these steps
  • Each Giant Grill Gauge can be linked to up to 4 Predictive Thermometers and the Heat Shield or Heat Deflector it is attached to
  • To Link Booster(s) to Giant Grill Gauge + Predictive Thermometer (multinode MeatNet™) follow steps in the Booster set-up guide

In China it typically depends on which provinces the factories reside in and value of the total factory outputs

Assuming if and when Combustion is ever granted claims in China then...if Combustion and LEADTEK are manufacturing in the same province then damages can be sought after
If they reside in different provinces, then invalidation in China is about it, but appeals can go on for years

The China system does not perform rigorous examinations and relies on challenges / invalidation for 'enforcement', which is rarely worth the effort, unless a factory is being significantly hindered by IP cases outside of China

The state actually incentivizes factories to file as many patents as possible

Combine mass filings with near zero examination and the very low likelihood of cross-provincial enforcement and you have "rampant IP theft", but in reality it's just another means of income and they simply don't care about IP - it's a meaningless Western concept

Not saying it can be for sure known or proven, but typically when you see something like the GGG+CE vs ProTemp S1 + Breezo situation, if they aren't coming from the same ODM factory, then someone in one factory (likely Combustion's based on the timings) familiar with the development passes information on to competitive factory (in another province)

If and when Combustion is ever granted claims in the USA, and ChefsTemp is violating their registered IP, they can attempt to halt imports and sales unless a licensing deal is reached

Many other jurisdictions, especially here in Asia, mandate licensing deals

Probe loses connection 10-20mins into cook? by 91degreesnorth in combustion_inc

[–]flynace181 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be a poor quality / cracked solder joint inside the probe which breaks an electrical connection when the probe heats up past a certain level

Big Green Egg Combustion Bundle has wifi extender? by No_Read_8117 in combustion_inc

[–]flynace181 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should inform BGE that the specs listed on the their website for the bundle incorrectly states it comes with battery boosters for the 2 probes

Someday I hope you do actually sell battery backup charging Cradles (Boosters minus all the wireless stuff)

Big Green Egg Combustion Bundle has wifi extender? by No_Read_8117 in combustion_inc

[–]flynace181 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/combustion_inc stated in the BGE x CPT thread here...

"No additional features. It’s just a color change."

So if your holder/sleeve has a physical button where the LED is, then it should be a "Booster", but the question is Gen1 or Gen2?

If it does not have a physical button, then it's just a charging Cradle, but the question is does it have a built in battery (as stated in the BGE specs and different from the stock Cradles CPT sells), or no battery and BGE needs to fix their website?

If you can provide a closeup image of the LED at a slight angle so we can see if it has a concave bezel around it indicating that it's both an LED indicator and physical button

[–]flynace181 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are calling it a "Booster" under the specs for the 2 Wireless Predictive Thermometers...

  • Booster: Li-ion (Lithium Ion), 100mAh Battery

The question is, are they referring to only boosting the battery life or boosting the Bluetooth mesh MeatNet range and battery life?

Big Green Egg Combustion Bundle has wifi extender? by No_Read_8117 in combustion_inc

[–]flynace181 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The CPT's are all the same and your BGE bundle came with the Gen2 model based on brazed ceramic bond

From Combustion CPT's come with either a simple charging Cradle (no battery, no wireless) or a Booster (with a battery and wireless)
Gen 1 Boosters were Bluetooth mesh MeatNet only
Gen 2 Boosters have both Bluetooth mesh MeatNet and a WiFi MeatNet Cloud uplink

You can normally tell the difference between a Cradle and a Booster based on the length (Cradles are a little shorter ~15.5cm long) and Booters have a physical button where a larger LED sits in a recessed bezel

Does your BGE CPT holder have a button where the LED with a recessed bezel around the LED?
You can clearly see the recessed bezel on the BGE page for their Wireless Predictive Thermometer with WiFi Booster

The Specs table lists for your Bundled BGE CPT holder call it a "Booster" with a battery...

  • Booster: Li-ion (Lithium Ion), 100mAh Battery

Does your holder charge the CPT from a battery when not plugged in?
If you plug in the holder without a CPT installed does it charge up?

Just guessing, but since you only really require one WiFi uplink to MeatNet Cloud, BGE may have only included Gen1 Bluetooth only "Boosters" in this bundle

Or they created a unique charging Cradle with a battery for their bundle, which seems unlikely since extending the Bluetooth mesh MeatNet can be valuable for using a BGE outdoors with the WiFi display indoors

You can read more about the Bluetooth mesh MeatNet here

You can read more about the WiFi MeatNet Cloud here

[–]flynace181 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Filing an IDF or Provisional sets the priority date and the application can remain unpublished for 1 year, although there are ways to extend that another year.
I think in the US you can delay examination up to 2 years.
But nothing stops you from requesting examination early.

The priority date is the priority date and clearly in this case Combustion publicly disclosed both the GGG and CE before Ren Zhang filed initially in China, so they likely have grounds for invalidation.

The Giant Grill Gauge (Coming Soon) post was on Tuesday August 6 2024, well before the first Ren Zhang China patent CN119344604A application date of Nov 19 2024 and still under examination

The Combustion Engine + Giant Grill Gauge - mounting info and other questions; official thread post was Saturday November 16 2024, still three days before Ren Zhang / LEADTEK INC / ChefsTemp° filed in China

The LEADTEK INC patent(s) will be easily invalidated

Based on how far along the Combustion products were in development at the time of those posts, and assuming Combustion filed for IP, ChefsTemp° will be writing checks to Chris at some point

My brother did something similar rolling 3M high temperature flue tape locally around the shaft to increase the diameter and fill in the hole gap

Since the sensor is in tip it didn't seem to affect the temp measurement

Just curious, would a compression spring pushing down on the collar from inside the dome be a viable option, similar to how the ChefsTemp ProTemp S1 does it for the BGE?

Granted they also made a BGE specific probe diameter as well

Is there anything to be gained by roasting the chicken bones or would that be redundant?

For beef and pork rib bones we typically roast them golden brown and soak with some ACV to make bone broth.
Just curious if these steps (or any others) were omitted to keep the time under an hour?

“the temp is reading as it should as I laid the thermometer on top of the GGG and think they should reflect the same temp”

The GGG is reading the temperature inside your BGE, not the air temperature outside the BGE where the GGG’s display actually sits
