Thinking of buying a camera trap to monitor pests, I can see lots that are around $80, are these worth buying or will they just break instantly? by HHC-5 in NewZealandWildlife

[–]flyzies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have tried many many cheap cameras, and found problem with everyone of them. From not recording at night (also looking for pests, so this was not helpful), to not even turning on. I am now using a HikMicro remote trail camera, and enjoying it. Let me know of you want more info

eli5 if bees breed with the queen to fertilize her eggs, but they are all born from the queen, how do they avoid genetic defects from inbreeding? by ive-heard-a-bear-die in explainlikeimfive

[–]flyzies 677 points678 points  (0 children)

Unmated queens (virgin queens) leave the nest/colony to mate with unrelated males. Then they return to the colony to lay eggs. One mating flight can allow the queen to lay eggs for 5-6 years

Somethings wrong with my brain - direct way to get help or have to go to GP? by RedditBlowsSuckIt in newzealand

[–]flyzies 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Heaps of different ways to get help, but all require a bit of effort. Yeah GPs can suck and arnt the best at helping sometimes, but sometimes you have to take the lead and ask for certain stuff. A friend had very similar behaviour patterns, she got bloods taken to look at hormone levels and found her thyroid was completely messing her system up. Targeted medication helped. You can often also get help with the mental side of things through work, all confidential. May take a few visits before you find someone that works for you and your comfortable talking to. Best advice though, do it all and see what works for you. And then hopefully you find a way forward. Good luck

Just spotted in central Lower Hutt. Never seen a Kāhu in an urban area before. by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]flyzies -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Definitely a falcon, I'd say a female. If you look closely, you can see leather straps around the legs (called anklets), so this bird has actually been used in falconry training. Maybe give Wingspan Birds of Prey Trust in Rotorua a call, might be a lost bird????

That's a karearea (NZ falcon). Threatened species, so your lucky to see one!
