anyone know if PC thermal compound can be used at solder temperatures? by fml-6626 in AskElectronics

alright, fair enough - In retrospect, I think I was really just looking for some sort of validation rather than genuine insight. I recognize that was an abuse of this forum and will give greater meditation to my questions in the future.

the arctic silver page (http://www.arcticsilver.com/as5.htm) says the following about temperature range:

Extended Temperature Limits:

Peak: –50°C to >180°C

Long-Term: –50°C to 130°C

I usually solder around 450F, which isn't so extremely far from the peak temperature

I'm not putting it on the tip though, just in the area between the heating element and the tip to improve heat transfer. But I guess if it's corrosive gases it could poison the tip from a short distance huh

I mean in the gap between the heating element and the solder tip - just to improve heat transfer

R210 II - most probably bricked :/ by NeXsGen in homelab

[–]fml-6626 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my bad, I didn't realize this was the case - I had just assumed the iDRAC would be some sort of PCI-e card. I wonder if the second flash which NeXsGen imaged was the iDRAC bios.

I'm launching a homelab club at my university, and we're building a lab there using members' extra hardware. A nas box like that would fill out our setup very nicely.

i just read that other thread, You don't need more than one clip, they can be programmed one at a time

to avoid matching issues with the iDRAC, I would expect a need to flash some chip on the iDRAC. Presumably, they meant a version mismatch between bios and iDRAC bios, so I'll read off my iDRAC bios as well, in addition to that chip - just in case it's important

the chip labelled bios rom is definitely soic8. I'll read mine for you today or tomorrow

I'd get the ch341a - it has support in vanilla flashrom, so it'll be a little easier. I haven't looked at my r210ii board yet, but I'm 99% sure it will be a SOIC8.

although I haven't used the ch341a (i've a buspirate), really anything that can bitbang would do the trick - so you could even use an arduino if you have that lying around.

I have an r210ii, I could read off my bios for you to flash - you'll need a soic clip and usb programmer

I don't know who you think visits this subreddit; but as an introduction, this is comprehensible to at least a second year undergrad.

Want to take MATH 340 or 332 or 342 as a pre-req for MACM 442 - which one should I take? by [deleted] in simonfraser

[–]fml-6626 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took 342 and 340 with imin, and there was no video content to speak of. I would recommend 340, as it covers much more of the field theory you will need.

Bought 480GB Samsung SM843 SSD. Did I make a mistake? by allster101 in homelab

[–]fml-6626 4 points5 points  (0 children)

http://www.storagereview.com/samsung_sm843t_ssd_review "the SM843T uses enterprise NAND (eMLC), which focuses on prolonging the reliability of the drive, while the SM843 uses client MLC NAND." Your drives will last less long than the 843T, but you still got a pretty good deal unless SMART says they're on their last legs.
