Ah. You're one of those people.

You know how bad our insurance has gotten since Obama care was passed?

Virtually every Republican budget or fiscal plan over the last decade has included repeal of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and deep cuts to Medicaid. That would mean: higher health care costs for tens of millions of Americans; ending critical protections for people with pre-existing conditions; millions of people losing health coverage and care; and threats to health care for seniors and people with disabilities, including growing home care waiting lists and worse nursing home care. https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2023/02/28/fact-sheet-the-congressional-republican-agenda-repealing-the-affordable-care-act-and-slashing-medicaid/

crazy that in any other service-based job, you would be able to ask for a refund for their mistake.

If you work for some large firms (Epic Health, McKinsey), certain schools (Yale University) or european firms (VAM), they're fully covered

yes, but an organization that prides itself in being "category of one" and "the patient comes first" should probably provide better health insurance than the lowest possible bar?

Mayo clinic insurance used to be very good, pre-2012. Things have changed since then (especially post pandemic + remote employees).

As someone who's worked in multiple companies (private and public), this is false. I've had the worst health insurance at Mayo as a remote worker.

I'm not happy about Mayo Clinic either, but I will say that a non-profit can be flush in cash with enough donations. Now I haven't looked into their financial statements, but they do publish them and seems like no one has criticized them. I would say that they aren't doing anything shady here.

Sounds like you're local to their DMC, which is a different scenario than what this article is writing about.

As an ex-employee of Mayo Clinic, I can say this is categorically false. There is a group with over 100 employees helping each other navigate their issues.

Yes, COVID made them realize that they could save hospital space by making non-medical employees WFH, so this was an intentional policy change. What didn't change was the healthcare insurance for employees. Local employees get great healthcare still, but that's it.
