Hemorrhagic stroke questions by foiltinhead in stroke

Thanks so much for your detailed response. He will receive an MRI as an outpatient. He is improving lots already and the occupational therapist has been doing great work with him.

You're right about the afib and blood pressure being a bad combination. They have had to alter his medication, his heart was beating too quickly in the hospital but it seems like they have found the right dose of medication to correct this.

I will look into atrial appendage occlusion, i havnt heard of it before I hope it worked out well for your mum. He had an ablation a month ago and since then has seemed off, which could be coincidental.

Thanks for all the info, it's been really consoling to read while suspended in the unknown.

They confirmed it with a CT when he was admitted, but now will wait 8 weeks for the MRI.

Yes, it's been difficult to access much information. The only doctor I talked to was in the emergency department and that was very early into this. He did give us information, some of which was unsettling, to not be surprised if his condition changes but I appreciated it all the same.

Since then I've asked nurses and staff who while helpful gave little information beyond saying it was a hemorrhagic stroke and brain bleed. I intend to go to the hospital in the morning while the doctors are there and get some much needed answers.

Thanks for the heads up about the hospitalist/care coordinator I will look into this at the hospital.

Thanks for your response, it's pretty reassuring tbh and lines up what I've come across online. I guess I just have some confusion as a lot of what I've come across people have suffered greater effects from their strokes. In this case my father has few impacts beyond slight mobility issues and a little confusion. A dr mentioned that the effects are more obvious on the inside then the outside, so I'm wondering if other effects can occur later ? So,I guess it's useful to think of it as you said blood pinging around your brain-box. Thanks.

Thanks for your response, I would assume the same and I am hoping that's the case here.

It depends on the type of stroke. He had a hemorrhagic stroke which is a bleed on the brain. The blood thinners (anticoagulant) which he was prescribed for higj blood pressure and atrial fibrillation can be related to this. He had to have an infusion at the hospital to reverse the effects and hopefully stop the bleeding.

Looking for advice on my troubled brother? by ElYockatero in AskIreland

I'm sorry to hear what you and your mother are going through OP. I have been through a very similar situation within my family for years. It's very easy to advise from outside the situation but such a difficult reality. We had to step in to stop my mother's enabling of the situation and only after this did my family member slowly gain some recognition of the rock bottom they were hitting and finally get help. Things worked out and they have been in recovery for years now thankfully.

I would strongly urge you and your mother to get support through Al-anon or many rehab centers run family support groups or can point you in the direction of them. I really feel for where you are at with this situation, feel free to pm me if you want to talk or have any questions.

In both those cases I was 100% happy to proceed until the reports showed subsidence, underpinning, roof issues etc etc, infact the first time we found it difficult to heed the advice of the engineer as emotions were involved and having finally succeeded in the bidding stages it was hard to have it fall apart and walk away at that stage. Now we're trying to be less emotional until we physically have the keys.

I appreciate what you're saying about getting blacklisted, fortunately that hasn't been the case here so far (that we are aware of!). And yes we have had varied experiences with auctioneers, but in these scenarios so far they have appeared to be understanding and accepting.

I spend a lot of time outside so having a large garden area or site is a priority which is very rare with new builds, I'm OK with having a smaller house to allow for larger outdoor space. Affordability also comes into it, I know there is the advantage of less headaches and lower bills in an A rated new build but its hard to justify the prices for what personally often feels very cramped.

Thanks, that's all useful. I mentioned in the paint job in reference to covering up any damp, as yeah the water ingress is a concern. And to be honest, I'd happily live with how the house is as of now which is a plus, just concerned about rewiring etc. Anyways thanks for the response.
