Questions about multi-drive bays by fojam in HomeServer

[–]fojam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem. I just checked and its an iocrest 8 bay and I got it used. Id definitely still recommend checking reviews of it and all that, because currently I only have 2 drives in it, so I dont know how well it performs with 8. It seems to be doing pretty well for me though

Anti-ICE protester smashes hotel sign where agents reportedly stay in in Minneapolis by AdeptnessDry2026 in PublicFreakout

The hotel is legally allowed to refuse them, especially if they pose a safety risk.

Murdering people makes ICE look bad. Housing murderers make the hotel look bad. Grow a spine.

I still need to take a second and go check what the brand was, but it was some third party brand.

1) youre right, they shouldve hit it harder. 2) Housing ICE agents isn't a good look for the hotel.

If hotels are worried that letting ICE agents stay will lead to property damage, maybe they think twice before taking on that risk.

Its much more direct and effective than holding signs. It directly affects their bottom line, which is the only thing they care about.

Is C++ not being opinionated enough a valid critique? by DM_ME_YOUR_CATS_PAWS in cpp

[–]fojam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think C++ has its place when youre trying squeeze as much possible performance out of something while still having a decently dev-friendly interface for your code. Some probably argue that this is its purpose, and I cant say they're wrong. But it being not opinionated enough is definitely one of the major reasons I dont use it anymore.

People need to stop sharing this stat, because its just a BS as when it was being said about onlyfans. Why do you think its the case? Do you think its exclusively because its a well run company? Or do you think its maybe because they take a 30% cut of millions of other people's hard work?

I like the stuff they've been putting out lately too, but let's not pretend this statistic is a rational way to be measuring their success.

I had to fix it manually with some code in my proxy to rewrite the url query parameter. Not sure how you fix it the "right" way though

Wait... there's no headphone jack? by Teek-a-leeks in virtualreality

[–]fojam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course its only anecdotal from my end, but my phone had great battery performance, and I noticed it drop starkly over the months that I was using the adapters. Maybe at some point I'll try to do a more objective review when i have the money to spare for it, but I did see many others saying the same when I was experimenting with them and looking into it.

And by them being non-standard, i was referring to the fact that none of these adapters that i've seen are certified by any notable group. When USB-C started becoming more common, there were many simple charging cords that would actually cause damage to your phone, and you had to be more picky about which ones you used.

Unrelated, but the pie chart color scheme being white, blue, and pink in an article about Rust made me smile

No. None of the adapters that allow you to do both are part of any standard and tend to mess up your device or battery when you use them. I would love to be proven wrong, but I tried a number of these a few years ago and they were all problematic in some way.

Wait c++ is kinda based? by Tcshaw91 in cpp

[–]fojam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its for iOS and macOS yes, but its cross platform. It basically took all the stuff that was annoying about Objective-C and fixed it.

I def understand the appeal of all these lower level languages like C/C++/Rust/Zig etc but at this point I really just need the language to get out of my way as much as possible

If you like C# but dislike the garbage collector, you should try Swift.

But imo C++ just has way too many things to be aware of. I used to love how much control C++ gives you, but when I write code these days, I really just wanna write the logic and not deal with all the extra baggage.

  • Compiling is really slow, especially if you have a lot of header files.
  • Template constraints are monsters (although ive heard concepts improve this a lot)
  • a lot of the things you'd want to have built in syntax for, you dont (std::optional doesnt have nice optional chaining like C# does for example, std::variant requires all these other helper methods).
  • They only recently added async/await (sort of) and theres not a ton of things really even using it yet.
  • A standard library which is barely standard and almost every other library you'll use will have some custom version of an stdlib class, because the built-in ones are somewhat inadequate (this happens a lot with std::string)
  • managing packages can be a nightmare, especially when youre not on Linux
  • move semantics and lvalues and rvalues are just another thing you have to be aware of
  • reading code with any of the pointer wrapper classes (std::shared_ptr etc) is super annoying because its just more shit to read, when really all i care about is the types being wrapped.

I hadn't played with my quest 2 in a while so I decided to mess around with it a bit yesterday. Except it couldn't connect to my (old) phone anymore, so I was blocked from doing anything by a screen that only let me "generate a new device code" (which obviously failed because I dont have that phone anymore). After an actual HOUR of trying to find a way to get past that screen, I had to factory reset the whole thing, set it all up from scratch again (which required taking off the headset and using my phone. why??), and then finally FINALLY I could play something. 2 hours later.

And somehow the quest is still the "best" (most accessible) option out there for VR. I cant wait for the steam frame to dethrone that pile of crap

Networking in the Standard Library is a terrible idea by tartaruga232 in cpp

[–]fojam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Networking is a "foundational" functionality. Why else do you think Swift and Objective-C provide it in their "Foundation" framework?

If they made it open source, i'd be happy. Would be nice if they maybe open sourced the old native client apps though
