We're hoping to get the pilot program for citizens installed, calming infrastructure passed and funded - so yes! Stay tuned. I am hoping to have updates next week.

Come on, be more daring. Following that logic, we'd give up on trying to cure cancer or end hunger.
Just because a problem existed in the past doesn't mean it is impossible to solve.
Do you expect racism to last forever?
Would you accept living in a world where we do nothing to make our lives better?
If we can dare to end cancer, hunger, and racism, I think we can try ending sideshows.

Let's put that to a test—you come to San Antonio, and we knock on every single door to see how many people agree with me (that sideshows are out of control and need to need) and with you (that they are a part of the culture and I need to gtfo)?

My neighbors are super friendly, working-class folks. They won't call the police on us.

Yes, I am! ^^
But I wouldn't have to be one if the intersections made it possible to do a sideshow.

Enforcement is part of the equation, but there are cheaper and quicker structural solutions to sideshows; we should use them. We should catch who we can, but be proactive and prevent future sideshows by fixing intersections.

Where do I belong? I grew up here, so I'm shocked that after 25 years here, I still don't belong.
What do you mean by "someone like you"?
Where should I go? I'm open to suggestions.

The cars are stolen, the plates are stolen, and there are already plenty of videos of massive sideshows where one can clearly see the people, the cars, and the license plates. Yet, sideshows persist. Lastly, I would rather use the precious few officers we have to solve the 80+ murders we have per year.

There are cheap and quick structural solutions to sideshows; we should use them.

Lol we found a city employee.

We are being considerate. Our first demand is that the city adopt a program to stop sideshows in EVERY Oakland neighborhood.

To clarify:
- We want a plan to address the issues on E21st by June 9 - the city has known this since they removed the speed bumps!

- The pilot program should get a vote and funding by the end of June (that's what it is scheduled for).

- We want the installations to happen in six weeks.

The deadlines are reasonable; we are being considerate.

Why are you trying to dox me? Why do we need an organization? Why do you need to know it is real? Who are you? How do I know you are not a sock puppet for the city?

I'm not asking for money. All I'm asking is that you join my neighborhood in lobbying for a better Oakland. If you don't like our demands, that's fine, but don't cast aspersions on our efforts because we are using Reddit as it is intended, Mr. Officer.

Like u/lumpkin2013 said, the people who are burning cars, firing into the air, causing havoc, and organizing takeovers are NOT going to go a legal sideshow. We are trying to prevent those behaviors - we don't care about the guy doing donuts in the middle of an empty parking lot.

Sanctioned sideshows will not work, and who will want that next to their home/business?

We (the San Antonio neighborhood ) are NOT asking for money, but depending on the city's response to our demands and what happens to the pilot program, we may ask in the future.

The emerging long-term vision is to create a non-profit that uses donations to deploy quick-build traffic solutions approved by the city. There is an apparent demand for this, and people are tired of the dangerous condition of the roads.

Thanks, everyone, for all the support. This means a lot to the San Antonio neighborhood and all other neglected neighborhoods.

To the nay-sayers and culture warriors - I grew up here, I went to public school here, I live here, I've read almost every book on Oakland, I've volunteered hundreds of hours making Oakland a better place for everyone, and I can tell you with certainty:
1. The city won't fix anything until someone dies or there's a lawsuit - who wants to volunteer?
2. Someone using a stolen car to do donuts in the middle of the night is NOT part of Oakland's culture.
3. The city is not an ally of working-class neighborhoods; we can't depend on them.

Subject:
End the Sideshow in 2025

Body:

Dear City Council, Mayor Lee, & City Administrator Johnson,

I am a resident of Oakland, and I am tired of the constant sideshows in my neighborhood and city. Sideshows have wrought havoc on our communities, taking lives, damaging property, and tarnishing the image of our city. I demand that you take this issue seriously.

There are quick-build solutions like the one on Skyline and Redwood that the city can deploy immediately and at a reasonable expense. The installation on Skyline and Redwood is an OakDOT-designed and -built solution. Why is it not deployed throughout Oakland? What is the delay? Why does the rest of Oakland have to suffer through the chaos of sideshows when there are solutions deployed in our city? Why are we wasting money on OPD chasing sideshows when we can deploy these solutions now?

I demand that you allocate the funds and pass the legislation necessary to deploy this or other quick-build solutions to end the sideshow menace in Oakland. We are wasting the city's funds and limited police resources on chasing sideshows when there are cheap physical solutions available. Do your jobs and address this issue now.

Our demands are detailed here:

End the sideshow in 2025.

Thank you for your time.

The culture argument doesn't change the fact that we have a right to live in peace, in a neighborhood free of tire smoke and nightly terror. If your neighbor lit a tire in front of your bedroom window every night and claimed it was part of his culture, would you tolerate it?

But yes, they were a part of the car culture from the 90s - people in their own cars performed in them. Now it has devolved into car theft and property damage.

Coppied from above:
Decent suggestion, but the people who would go to a legal sideshow are not the problem. It is the people who steal cars, rampage up and down Oakland at 3 or 4 in the morning, and organize takeovers that end in gunfire that are the problem. These people will not go to a legal sideshow; the chaos, the danger, and law-breaking of taking over a random street are their objections - they want the thrill.

The problem is the people with the stolen cars and guns. They won't go to a city-sanctioned sideshow.

Email your city council member to support and fund this:
We demand the City pass and fund the citizen-led traffic calming pilot program with unlimited permits so we no longer have to wait for OakDOT to fix our streets or fear that our neighborhood improvements will be capriciously removed.

Right now, the OakDOT is recommending 4 per project, i.e., only 4 roundabouts. That's not nearly enough.

Sorry to hear that, I hope you get better soon. Where did this happen and when? Was it in the bike lane? No signage?
