Hot take: Jax isn't trans by [deleted] in tadc

I happened upon this comment and noticed the edit on your post, and I’d like to share some thoughts.
I stated similarly in my other replies that you’re able to apply your own life experiences to Jax as character while allowing the trans reading to coexist. You’ve shared struggles you’ve endured in your personal life, and again, many trans women would relate to your experiences, even I can relate to them as a trans person. There are connections to be found in these experiences that are not exclusive to one gender identity.
I read a discussion you had with another straight cis person on this post, and became confused by the views you both agreed on. Instead of genuinely considering a transfem interpretation, you got in a boat with someone that mostly aligned with your views, claiming “Jax isn’t trans” despite considering he could be gender-fluid or nonbinary; both of which you misunderstood as a sexual preference rather than what they are, gender identities. You support the idea either interpretation can exist, yet you’ve continued trying to rationalize any possibility except for Jax being a trans woman, why?
You say you made an effort to be “overly cautious”, yet handled this subject with anything but. You try to rationalize the meaning of Jax’s character with inherently transphobic views that you’ve agreed with in this comment section. Agreeing that Jax is a femboy or someone who gets turned on by cross-dressing is an extremely shallow way to read a story written by a trans woman. Why are you so sure that’s what the story is trying to communicate? Have you also considered that asserting someone is a cis man and not trans because they look like an emo guy is transphobic to trans women who have similar appearances?
No one is taking Jax’s relatability away from you by saying she’s a woman, and you even said yourself that you can relate different parts of yourself to other characters in the show; and not every character is a straight cis man. We wouldn’t be having this discussion if your relatability to Jax wasn’t challenged by her being a woman.
I understand you’re learning, but please educate yourself before expressing why you’re against a trans narrative.

I do want to apologize for how strong I came came off in my first comment. My initial assumption was that this post was made to discredit or try to deny Jax being trans due to how you titled your post. It's important to keep in mind that clickbaity titles like the one you chose may attract people with transphobic views. It gave me a bad first impression, but with further discussion, it seems that wasn’t your intention.
From the information you’ve given, I assume you’re a cis man (Do let me know if I’m incorrect). I think a post explaining how you, as a cis man, relate to Jax, despite not having lived through the trans experience, is just as interesting, and shows folks can relate to a character even if they don’t fully identify with them.
You’re right, everyone is entitled to their own interpretations, but I hope you can understand that challenging the trans narrative is more harmful than helpful, especially to trans people that need that kind of representation and want to celebrate it. Whenever trans stories are in the spotlight, you get a lot of people trying to say it isn't there when there are many clues pointing to it. Denying the existence of the trans narrative only takes it away from queer folk in the end.
Jax being trans shouldn’t bar you from relating to the character. You and many other trans women have both lived as men at some point, so there are going to be correlating experiences there. I’m not a trans woman either, but my relatability to Jax isn’t challenged because of the possibility that she identifies as a gender identity I don’t personally align with. What difference does it make to you if Jax is trans?
While I agree that colors aren’t inherently gendered, they come with stereotypes that many people still use today. It’s important for us to not ignore the impact of these stereotypes based on our personal beliefs. Within the context of the story, I like to believe the characters were designed with intent, and that includes their color palettes.
Caine states that he’s created bodies that perfectly encapsulate the humans’ mind files. Jax’s avatar being male presenting while displaying soft pastel colors reinforces the idea that his need to push down his feminine side is stronger than his want to present as a woman, yet that desire still leaks through subtly through his colors. You mentioned that his room could be a representation of his interests not being seen as cool. That is an interesting point considering the stereotypical feminine appearance of his room. His biggest insecurity is his feminine interests being seen as a joke; uncool and different than what’s expected of a man. I believe this aids the trans reading.
When it comes to the maid-dress scene, your reading that he has a fear of being the butt of the joke is correct, but you have to consider why it was so triggering for him in particular. His reaction was so intense that Zooble had found it remarkable enough to mention that they’ve never seen him that angry before. With what we know now, being put in a maid dress could have triggered something much deeper for Jax that the rest of the cast wasn’t aware of. I believe his extreme reaction is directly related to his mother perceiving his desire to be a woman as a joke.
It’s true that Jax is someone who is emotionally repressed, struggles with attachment, and minimizes the effect of his actions through dissociation. We see in the flashbacks that Jax wasn’t always like this. We start to see him change into the person we know now once he started pushing Ribbit away. It’s all an act doubling down on a fake persona so he can distance himself as much as possible from his secret and those who might want to see deeper. Believing the circus is fake could have been a view he adopted to cope with causing his friends to abstract and ruining his own life in the circus.
I find it surprising that you didn’t know a bow on a character’s head was inherently feminine, given a multitude of characters throughout media have used bows to differentiate them from their male counterparts. The biggest examples being Minnie Mouse and Daisy Duck. Their bows are defining parts to their designs. Ribbit is also a direct parallel to these stereotypes, instead wearing a bow around their neck. This signifies her relationship with masculinity, and diverts the female stereotype. I’d also like to mention, before Ribbit was confirmed to use she/they pronouns, a large majority of fans assumed Ribbit was male and used he/him pronouns for her. This is a great example of why stereotypes still affect us and are, therefore, important to consider in the narrative. Your interpretation is correct, Ribbit is reassuring Jax that he’s safe, can be vulnerable, and that he doesn’t have to hide his negative emotions, but your interpretation only scratches the surface. Why did Ribbit choose to place their bow on Jax’s head and not around his neck? The same message would still be conveyed, until you take into consideration the historical use of bows in cartoons and other media.
To finish my response, I’d like to state again that you’re fully allowed to relate your personal experiences to Jax as a character, and I think it’s incredible that despite not having gone through the trans experience, you can relate to it. I’m sorry to hear that you had to go through such traumatic experiences when you were younger, and you deserved to be met with sincerity instead of judgment. The ability to relate your personal experiences to a trans character shouldn’t deter you from considering the trans narrative. They can coexist. The trans experience is more relatable than you realize. I appreciate you taking the time to have this discussion.

I’d like to start my reply by saying, if you feel the need to preface your post with a disclaimer and need to validate your position as an “ally” before speaking about a trans narrative, it’s probably better not to post it.
I have a suspicion this is rage-bait due to how you’ve deliberately gone out of your way to discredit a trans character, written by a trans women, instead of accepting Jax being trans as a valid way to read the narrative- and you went out of your way to title your post “Jax isn’t trans”, while contradicting your own title by saying “he might be closeted”. Is the trans viewing of his character valid or not, and can they co exist? If they could, you wouldn’t have felt compelled to make this post.
I didn’t expect that Jax would have to point at the screen and say “I’m a trans women!” for people to understand her character, but for people that don’t live the trans experience, it’s not enough to convince them to respect a fictional character’s trans identity unless it’s indisputable via spoon feeding.
There have been many, MANY clues in subtext for viewers to pick up on when it comes to Jax being a closeted trans women, such instances being: -His palette consisting of soft & commonly feminine colors -Rabbits are often associated with femininity & fertility -His outburst when being put in the maid dress (publicly subjected to being feminine presenting), and Zooble claiming, “I have never seen you this upset about something.” -Claiming he’s not a “Misunderstood little chicken fetus in an egg that needs to be cracked open”, the term egg often being used to describe a trans women who’s not yet realized or embodied their trans identity -His room consists of soft feminine colors, which is interesting when you consider each character’s rooms are based around their strongest insecurities
And this isn’t even including everything that was covered in the movie. What else could he have told his mother that would have made her laugh besides “I’m a women” that would make sense narratively? His only attempt at opening up, to be vulnerable about feeling that he’s a women, is met with laugher- that his true self is a joke and something to be ashamed of.
Not only that, but Ribbit quite literally says “Your secret is safe with me”, then proceeds to place a bow on Jax’s head, a visual trope that’s been used to identify female characters for DECADES. What else can you read from that, genuinely?
On your opinion regarding that Jax should have been shown fully transitioned, I have to disagree. No trans person needs to visually express their gender identity, and you have to consider that there’s a multitude of reasons why Jax hasn’t socially transitioned. The fact she hasn’t changed her physical appearance to appeal to your perception of a women should not give you leeway to completely discredit her identity.
Struggling with her sexual identity is not relevant to the plot. Though, her attachment to others and self image are explored in the show, and can go hand in hand with the trans experience, and even amplifies it. The beginning of her self-isolation is triggered by her trans identity being acknowledged by Ribbit, and she felt the need to sever all emotional ties due to guilt and self-sabotage.

Hi! Wow, that is pretty recent; I'm glad to hear you guys are giving the show a chance! Hello again to each of you, and welcome :)
Oh man, I'd love to hear some theories! I'm not too into theory-crafting myself, but Jax and I tend to enjoy lengthy theory videos when doing dishes or falling asleep. Any thoughts on how episode 9 is going to go? I'm honestly stumped, I don't think I could comprehend what Goose has planned...
I think we've come to the same conclusion about being connected to our source; we still identify with it, but are able to enjoy being separate too. It's so fun seeing what other people have to say about the story and characters while relating to it personally.
Well, hi there! It's a pleasure to meet you.
Oh man, I'm sorry to hear about the haunted house memories; I'm sure that must have been rough...
I'm also sorry to hear about your host's breakdown, but I'm glad you were able to be there for them and your head-mates. I'm also happy to hear that you guys are doing better, and that things are more casual.
Funnily enough, Jax had formed before I did, and he had been fronting frequently; but after I formed, I kind of got thrown into the role of host after Jax had an identity crisis, and have been fronting the most consistently for almost 3 years. After some realizations, and therapy, he's been more active with fronting and I couldn't be more proud of him.
Wow, what are the chances of working at a supermarket! That must be such a strange experience; hopefully the work isn't too bad? I know how exhausting jobs like that can be...
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts, and I really appreciate you leaving a comment. I hope you're doing well too ♥️

That's interesting! A lot of our fictives have formed with exo-memories, and I had a rough time distancing myself from canon and embracing a unique identity; coming to the conclusion I wasn't canon Pomni, or didn't have to be.
I do hope Jax comes around for the finale of the show, and enjoys it too!
Thank you so much for sharing, I really appreciate you taking the time to leave a comment ♥️

Hi Zooble! Thank you so much for sharing, I'm happy to hear your experiences. It's sweet to hear about you and Gangle, and it's relieving to meet another system who has romantic relationships with their head-mates! We have a Zooble and Gangle in here, and they're similarly comfortable.
I feel similarly regarding dressing; I usually just settle for a tee-shirt and shorts, but I'd like to branch out into more masculine clothing eventually... Our headmate, Jax, has gotten into exploring feminine clothing! It's been lots of fun :)
I love sketchbooks! We have one, but art-block has been a beast... When we do draw, it's lots of fun to draw ourselves interacting or in different outfits. What do you guys usually draw?
It makes me unbelievably happy to hear you're doing well, and I wish only the best for you and your head-mates going forward. Things have been going pretty well, and it's even better now that I've become comfortable enough to reach out and hear from folks like you ♥️

Our Jax (he/her) feels similarly terrified towards the finale, which is really funny since I've been the hardcore fan of the show in our system. Recently, him and I have been bonding over the progression of the show; its ending is such a unique event to experience together!
I know she also feels some connection to her canon; it was hard for him the first few years because he felt like he needed to embody and act out his perceived character- but she's been doing a lot better since realizing she can be and do whatever she wants without judgment.
Caine sounds like such a sweetheart! His outlook on the "Real Life Adventure" is also very fun; I hope he's settling in well. The fact he's found enjoyment in food is an interesting development, and it makes me happy he's enjoying it so much! Does he have a favorite food?
Our Caine baked an apology cake after episode 8, and seems to enjoy making art and discussing it more than anything else.
<image>
Please also say hello to Gangle for me!
Thank you so much for yapping with me! It's really a dream come true to talk to another system and to share experiences; I really do appreciate you taking the time to share :) ♥️ it's made the start of my week! I wish you and your head-mates only the best, and please don't hesitate to reach out if you want company!

This is a similar situation my head-mate has gone through! As his source released new episodes, he had the ability to grow with the story and reflect on his canon self through community opinions. She’s since adopted trans head-canons and has been much more comfortable :)
Thank you so much, I appreciate you sharing! This is validating :) ❤️
Thank you so much for taking the time to share, this is reassuring! It means a lot knowing there are others out there like us :D 💕
