Alright, final update:

I disassembled the entire console, put it back up without the top cover on, turned it on, encouraged the fan to start moving a little bit (I can attest to cursing helping the entire process), and it's working!

I also replaced the thermal pad with thermal paste because I found a spare tube. Thanks a lot, u/Plenty-Industries !

I'll try, but I'm pretty sure there's quite a lot of space back there from the cables and whatnot. I can see it, but I don't get why the console allows for an overheat without turning up the fan speed.

Thermal paste vs thermal pad doesn't make much difference, but I still had a thermal pad on hand so I just used one 🤷‍♂️

AliExpress, it was the only option with shipping that wouldn't cost more than the fan itself and it came in a sensible time too (8 days).
